What will I learn on this module?

In this module you will appraise contemporary management and leadership in Integrated Health and Social Care settings by reviewing the skills and knowledge needed to manage successfully. You will compare theories and concepts underpinning management and leadership in health and social care initiatives in relation to political, social, cultural and professional perspectives in the workplace, by drawing on real life examples. The aim of this Module is to prepare you to work effectively within management settings by giving you insights into the running of a wide variety of integrated health and social care initiatives in the public, voluntary and private sectors, and as such this module lends itself to a continuation/enhancement of the links you have formed with your external agency in the first 2 years of your degree.

How will I learn on this module?

Teaching and learning strategies for this module will include lectures to outline the main concepts, trends and theories. Facilitated group discussions will be integral to the module where you will explore key concepts in more depth to draw out individual and collective analysis. You will be expected to engage with directed independent study tasks, as well as working in informal groups to present your ideas. Online forums and discussion groups will also be introduced to enhance your learning.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Lecturers will facilitate seminar groups to support academic development. You will have access to lecturers at specifically designated times via online forums; email; group tutorials and one to one meetings. Formative and summative assessment tasks include ‘feedforward’ in preparation for assignments, and ‘feedback’ to identify aspects of students’ strengths and also aspects which require development. How will I be assessed?

Summative
With reference to Case study materials provided and your own observations and experiences with your external agency, you will undertake a review of the current challenges in Integrated Health and Social Care in relation to Management and Leadership. These will be assessed by
1) 1,500 word written review 60% LO 3,4 5
and
2) Open Note exam Two hours 40%
( LO 1 & 2You will receive feedback on the summative assessment via:

Written comments on assessed work, highlighting strengths and weaknesses and indicating pathways to the further development of knowledge and skills. Areas of concern will be linked to positive advice on how to address issues.

Formative
You will work individually to identify and present an issue associated with Management or Leadership in Integrated Health and Social Care, (for example managing change; leading multi-agency teams), based in and around your allocated external agency.. (This could include a series of ‘filmed vignettes’ from the partner Agencies, talking about ‘live’ issues in health and social care management).

You will receive feedback from Peers and from Tutors.

Module abstract

This module is designed to prepare you to work effectively within management settings by giving insights into the management and leadership of integrated health and social care services in the public, voluntary and private sectors. It aims to achieve this by supporting you to critically review how services are managed and delivered within different settings, whilst evaluating the skills and knowledge needed to manage successfully. It also encourages you to examine some of the theories and concepts underpinning the management and leadership of integrated health and social care initiatives, whilst exploring political, social, cultural and professional perspectives in the workplace. You will be required to engage in small scale reviews of contemporary research to identify emerging themes/debates
Learning strategies in this module are centred upon students researching; identifying and discussing contemporary research on relevant topics. This will
occur in seminar and lecture activities. You will be supported through lectures and seminar activities to compare current research with seminal texts, exploring theoretical differences, as well as the evolution of research methodologies related to the study of integrated health and social care.
