What will I learn on this module?
This module will give you knowledge of the principles and practice of developing cross platform, progressive mobile web applications for location aware, networked devices, using relevant technologies, and of issues relating to their use, such as accessibility. You will learn to design, develop and test mobile web applications.
‘Mobile Computing’ will provide you with knowledge and skills that are useful for later modules such as Computing Dissertation, as well as for a placement in your third year. Employers are looking for skilled mobile web application developers who can analyse problems and apply solutions.
During ‘Mobile Computing’ you will work through a series of practical exercises, making use of Northumbria’s state-of-the-art computer labs. The assessment will involve developing a mobile web application.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through lectures, practical workshops, and independent learning. The lectures will cover general theories and concepts that will enable you to tackle a series of guided exercises. You will work on these during hands-on workshop sessions in Northumbria’s CIS building computer labs, which are fully equipped with the latest industry-standard software. There will also be practical surgery sessions where you can seek additional advice and support.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be supported by lecturers during the timetabled sessions when you will receive advice feedback on your work. The University’s eLearning Portal (Blackboard) offers remote access to all lecture and workshop materials to reinforce your learning. In addition, the university library offers support for all students through providing electronic resources.

How will I be assessed?
The summative assessment (100%) will be an individual assignment that brings together all your new skills and techniques. It will involve the: creation of an interactive, mobile web application for a given outline design specification; and documenting and justifying your design (max 1000 words). You will be given written feedback for this assessment.

Employers are looking for skilled mobile application developers. This module introduces you to developing mobile web applications. Topics will include designing, building, and testing applications, mobile application development frameworks, progressive applications, database operations and the processing and integration of data to create mobile interfaces, accessibility, and security issues. The module’s content will draw, where appropriate, on your tutors research interests to help you learn about the latest insights. You will use Northumbria’s state-of-the-art computer labs. The assessment will involve applying your new knowledge and skills to develop a substantial mobile web application.
