Promoting Sexual Health in Healthcare Practice - Level 7 - AC7110

This module aims to prepare primary care nurses to safely and competently deliver sexual health services, within professional, legal and governance frameworks in primary healthcare settings.

During the module, you will critically appraise current service provision to identify health priorities and opportunities to develop practice/service. You will also examine legal, ethical and professional implications that influence the sexual healthcare agenda.

The theoretical knowledge you will gain from the module will enable you to achieve clinical competency in the sexual health area.

Content Overview:

  • What is sexual health and illness

  • Sexual health assessment and inequalities in the UK

  • Intervening using motivational interviewing/brief interventions

  • Legal, professionaland ethical considerations within sexual health provision

  • Contraceptive methods including LARC and Emergency contraception

  • Pregnancy decision making

  • Common STIs screening including blood-borne viruses, withthe associated aetiology and management options for each infection

  • Sexual dysfunction and psycho-sexual issues

  • Sexuality, diversity and equality-LGBT and transgender patients

  • Safeguarding issues, under-16, CSE, sexual assault Female genital mutilation

  • National cervical screening training (if required) can be included during the course at no additional cost

This NHS Continuing Workforce Development module aims to prepare primary care nurses to safely and competently deliver sexual health services, within professional, legal and governance frameworks in primary healthcare settings.

You must be a registered primary care nurse and have previous evidence of level 5 study.

Level 7:

1. Critically appraise  the health needs of their  practice population, public health priorities and service provision

2. Critically analyse outcomes from quality performance indicators and identify opportunities for service development

3. Demonstrate clinical competence in meeting diverse sexual health needs, working within local and national governance frameworks at Levels 1 & 2

4. Determine interventions for effective holistic care provision, including  addressing risk taking behaviours ,  contextualising  the attitudes, values and beliefs which may impact upon the delivery of sexual health care

5. Critically reflect on the ethical, legal and professional implications that influence the sexual health care agenda
