You will learn about the essential elements that contribute to improving monitoring and management of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This module will enable you to respond to and challenge practice for yourself and others.  As you explore the evidence base you will develop an awareness of contemporary drivers putting monitoring and management of COPD at the forefront of care delivery. You will develop your consultation and history taking skills which can significantly influence practice.

The module seeks to enable practitioners from a range of professional backgrounds and settings to develop knowledge and understanding of essential elements which contribute to improving monitoring and management of patients with COPD, whilst enabling them to respond to and challenge practice for themselves and others. Topics include:

  • Respiratory foundation – definition and classification of COPD; pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches; anxiety and depression; end of life.
  • Consultation skills – including history taking; shared decision making; motivational interviewing.
  • Health promotion and education – consideration of lifestyle factors including smoking cessation, diet and exercise and their impact on disease trajectory; referral to specialist services.
  • The practicalities of inhaler management – inhaler technique workshop; exacerbation management; encouraging and supporting patients with self-management.
  • Patient perspectives – patient voice; patient choice; carers perspectives.

In addition, participants will develop an appreciation of research relevant to the subject that can significantly influence practice.

This module will enable you to respond to and challenge practice for yourself and others. As you explore the evidence base you will develop an awareness of contemporary drivers putting monitoring and management of COPD at the forefront of care delivery. You will develop your consultation and history taking skills which can significantly influence practice.

This course is based at our Coach Lane Campus where you will have access to cutting-edge facilities with technology embedded through all aspects of the module.

You should be a qualified nurse or healthcare practitioner, who is involved in the management of COPD patients. You will need to demonstrate evidence of previous study at level 6.

Level 6:

Undertaking the module should enable the student to:

Knowledge & Understanding:

Develop relevant knowledge of the trajectory and central components of COPD in order to assist them to lead and influence monitoring and management of COPD patients in clinical practice.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:

Use established techniques to critically analyse evidence and draw conclusions about its usefulness to professional practice.

Draw upon IT skills to facilitate their professional development and communication strategies e.g. engage with the eLP materials and discussion board and submit their work electronically.

Hold critical discussions with their peers during workshops and in their written summative assessment.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):

Develop the characteristics of a Northumbria student as they reflect on service user’s problems, applying knowledge of contemporary drivers used in the monitoring and management of COPD.
