Feeling apprehensive and nervous are natural emotions when starting something new, like university. In fact, studies show that mental health and confidence are the biggest barriers to people wanting to go to university in the first place.

At Northumbria, we take your mental health and wellbeing as seriously as your academic career. We know that with the right help and guidance, students can leave university with even more resilience than they had before.

The academic journey is different for every student. But from the moment you choose to study with us, we have everything in place to support your mental health and wellbeing 24/7.

We take a holistic and responsive approach to mental wellbeing and have a huge variety of options to choose from through our Student Life and Wellbeing team and Students’ Union.

At enrolment, you’ll be encouraged to join our Mental Health and Wellbeing initiative and Educational Analytics programme. These initiatives use reliable data, such as attendance information, to ensure you get appropriate help, when you need it.  For example, if we notice you’ve missed classes - we’ll be in touch to make sure you’re OK and check if you need any additional support.

We also offer:

• Ask4Help – available 24/7 during term-time, Ask4Help is the first point of contact for all student support enquiries.

• Free SafeZone app - this connects all students directly to the University’s security team whenever students need help.

• Kooth Online Support and Counselling – providing free, safe and anonymous online counselling and emotional wellbeing support which students can access on their mobile, tablet or desktop.

• Student Portal – offering lots of accessible self-help information and guidance.

• Online self-help resources – we have a wide range of digital resources available to help students solve their own problems or achieve their goals without the direct supervision of professionals. These tools help students expand their knowledge and understanding of themselves, whilst providing advice and guidance on how to manage the issues concerning them.

• Guided online self-help courses - these courses are structured to allow students to help themselves with support from another person. They require students to work with the contents of the self-help material to overcome any problems and achieve their personal goals.

• Wellbeing workshops – our workshops cover topics such as Social Confidence, Getting Things Done, Stress and Worry, and Mindfulness to help students deal with the pressures of university life.

Further support - One-to-one sessions with a professional practitioner are available if needed. This service is available to all enrolled Northumbria University students who are a resident in the UK. Once registered, students are contacted within two working days unless they require urgent support, which can be accessed immediately.

We’re passionate about ensuring you’re always supported throughout your entire student journey. Whatever you need, we’ll be here for you every step of the way.
