September is an exciting time in our students’ calendars. Whether you are returning to Newcastle for the start of a new term or are ready to take on Fresher’s week and settle into uni life, there is plenty to explore in town this month. We’ve picked out just a few key events you might want to check out before the new term.

Great North Run – 9th September
Every September, locals head to the streets to cheer on the brave people taking on the challenge of ‘The Great North Run’. Whether you know any of the runners personally or not, it is a lovely day and a great way to get involved in the community spirit – you also might spot a few famous faces along the way!
Merchant Quarter Revival – 14th September
Will you be in Newcastle on Saturday 14 September? If so you should make sure to head down to the Merchant Quarter Revival, an event set to rejuvenate the old Merchants Quarter and honour its past as a busy market place. The Merchant Quarter Revival; new Bakers, Makers and Shakers is an especially great way to familiarise yourself with some of Newcastle’s most coveted restaurants, cafes and independent sellers all in one day. Market stalls will take place over three historic locations including Bigg Market, Newcastle Cathedral and Newcastle Castle. Wander around an array of stalls from bakers, clothing designers, vintage and vinyl sellers, and of course lots of tasty street food will be available too.
Free tours will be held around Merchants Quarter allowing visitors to explore the Bigg Market, the Cloth Market, Cathedral and Castle and learn of its fascinating past. For a one-of-a-kind experience, you can even purchase tickets on the day to watch the sunset from the top of Newcastle Castle and take in the breath-taking panoramas views across the city.

Les Misérables at Theatre Royal - Thu 15 Aug - Sat 5 Oct 2019
If you are a fan of musicals make sure to visit the Theatre Royal this September to see the UK sell-out tour of Les Misérables. Set against the 19th Century June Rebellion, witness the journey of French peasant and convict Jean Valjean as the ruthless Inspector Javert closes in on him years later.
This particular adaptation is even more exciting, with scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo and has even be referred to as “Les Mis for the 21st Century”. Tickets are selling fast so make sure to pick up yours soon. Tickets start from £23.50.
Book of Mormon at The Sunderland Empire - to 14th September
The Smash hit play “Book of Mormon” has been at the Sunderland Empire from the 28th of August and there are still dates available in early September so make sure you don’t miss out. It has been named ‘The best Music of this Century’ by The New York Times and “the funniest musical of all time by Entertainment Weekly. And if that’ not impressive enough, the accolades from award ceremonies speak for themselves; racking up an impressive nine Tony Awards and 4 Olivier Awards for Best Musical. From the creators of South Park you can probably guess the kind of Dark comedy you will be in for. The toe tapping musical follows the story of two Mormon boys from Utah on their mission to convert new followers far from home – with hilarious consequences. With sold out shows world-wide now is your chance to witness this musical phenomenon before they dance their way out of the North East. Tickets can be bought from only £13!
Freshers’ Week – 26th
We couldn’t tell you about September activities in Newcastle without mentioning Northumbria Freshers’ Week and there is a whole lot going on from the 19th September! Our Student’ Union works incredibly hard to make sure you have as much fun as possible from day to night and can’t wait to welcome students new and old. Take part in A “Greatest Showman” singalong, tour Newcastle city via Open top bus, play on during a board game social, or visit Game of Thrones’, Kristian Nairn aka Hodor during his Rave of Thrones DJ set! London Campus
East End Film Festival
For those students starting at our London campus located in the capital’s East End, why not visit the East End Film Festival located just 5 minutes from our London campus. From the 26th of September the Temple at Liverpool Street in East London will start to celebrate the approaching chill in the air with a range of horror films including the Ari Aster’s ‘Hereditary as well as old classics such as ‘The Omen’ and ‘the Shining’. And the best bit is the films will be matched by their surroundings as they will be held in an old Masonic Temple.
