What to Pack to Study Abroad

Hannah Kagawala International

When starting to pack for studying abroad, it can be overwhelming thinking about what to take with you and what to leave behind.

To make this process easier, divide your things into “essentials”, “loved possessions”, and “desirables”.

First, start packing your essentials - this includes all your important documents and paperwork, some appropriate clothes for the weather, your undergarments, toiletries and towels, some footwear, electronics such as laptop and tablet, any medication you need on a regular basis, items of religious significance, and basic utensils - like a pot and a pan. If you are certain that some items that you use at home are not available in the country you are going to, then pack those too.

Then, begin packing your loved possessions. These are items that will make you feel more at home in your new room such as picture frames of your loved ones, posters, books that you read regularly, your special mug and water bottle, your home slippers, and so on.

Having these items set up at your new place will make you feel more at ease and comfortable.

Finally, if there is enough space in your bag, start packing items that you desire to have but is not necessary to take. These can include your favourite snacks from home, some games you like to play, any dressy clothes for special occasions, some notebooks and stationery, and more kitchen items. Don’t get carried away at this point, as most of these will be available to buy where you go. The important thing is to not surpass your baggage allowance!

You are now ready to fly!
