Dr Elizabeth Tiarks

Assistant Professor

Elizabeth Tiarks is an assistant professor in law. She teaches and researches in the fields of cyber law, space law and criminal justice, particularly sentencing and restorative justice. Her publications have explored a number of areas including: the use of algorithms in sentencing and their impact on legitimacy; the decision-making process in restorative justice conferences and the trade-off between empowerment of lay participants and the requirements of consistency and proportionality; and the use of restorative justice as a conflict resolution mechanism for long duration human spaceflight activities. She has also written about the legal issues relating to Global Navigation Satellite Systems.

 

Elizabeth graduated from Durham University with a BA(Hons) in philosophy, after which she studied law and qualified as a barrister, practising in criminal and regulatory law. Elizabeth completed an MA in philosophy at Durham University whilst continuing to practise as a barrister. She then commenced her PhD in law at Durham, funded by a Durham University scholarship. Elizabeth joined Northumbria Law School in 2015 and was awarded her PhD in 2016.
