Dr Andrew Sturrock

Associate Professor

Department: Nursing, Midwifery & Health

Andrew is an Associate Professor of Public Health and Primary Care in the Department of Nursing, Midwifery & Health, having joined Northumbria University in June 2022.

Andrew is an academic pharmacist with a background in primary care. He worked across a range of GP practices and community pharmacies in the North East of England before moving into academia. Andrew has previously held academic roles as a Senior Lecturer, Principal Lecturer, and Master of Pharmacy Programme Leader at the Univeristy of Sunderland.

Andrew's research interests focus on mutlidisciplinery oral health care, osteoporosis, person-centred care, patient safety and workforce development. Andrew is currently leading programmes of work exploring the role of community pharmacy in the early identification of patients with head and neck cancer, and clinical pharmacists roles in osteoporosis in primary care. He is currently involved with a range of projects funded by the NIHR, Royal Osteoporosis Society and Health Education England.

Andrew is an Advance HE Senior Fellow and was awarded a prestigious National Teaching Fellowship in 2019. His teaching and learning focus is on interprofessional education, simulation-based learning and patient involvement in the education and training of health and social care professionals. 

Andrew is a member of the General Pharmaceutical Council Accreditation and Recognition Team, responsible for the accreditation of pharmacy and independent prescribing programmes across the United Kingdom. He also holds roles as an external examiner and editoral board member of several journals.
