Dr Jasmine Mann

Research Fellow

Department: Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering

I am a Research Fellow at Northumbria University. I completed my undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Leicester, where my PhD explored plasma dynamics in the terrestrial inner magnetosphere using Cluster data. I then held a research associate position at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory (University College London) from 2017 – 2020. I joined the Department of Maths, Physics, and Electrical Engineering in 2020, and currently research Earth’s inner magnetospheric dynamics during geomagnetic storms using spacecraft observations.

I am an elected Councillor of the Royal Astronomical Society (2021 - current), and Chair of MIST Council 2017 – current; a Royal Astronomical Society affiliated group). I also participate in a range of outreach activities, including my role as hub-lead for Orbyts at Northumbria University.

My research focuses on understanding the highly dynamic, highly variable, and highly complex magnetospheric environment of Earth, particularly during geomagnetic storms and substorms. My research interests include the dynamics of the cold plasma population, variations in the ring current plasma population, and the physics of Ultra-Low Frequency waves. I use large data sets for statistical analysis of plasma and electromagnetic spacecraft observations, as well as ground based data, to understand the dynamic inner magnetosphere. I am currently part of the NERC Rad-Sat consortium and the UKRI SWIMMR Sat-Risk consortium, where I am exploring the impact of Ultra-Low Frequency waves on the radiation belts.
