Dr Zoe Avner

Assistant Professor

Department: Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation

Zoë Avner completed her PhD at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada in 2014. Her doctoral research drew on the work of Michel Foucault to examine how university coaches understand and use “fun” as part of effective coaching. Zoë has experience coaching and playing professional football in various international settings including France, the UK, the U.S and Canada. She has coached football across different age groups at the participation and high-performance youth sport levels.

Dr Zoe Avner is a Lecturer in Sports Coaching. Her research draws on poststructuralist methodologies to explore athlete and coach learning, power and coaching, and coaching ethics. Her work seeks to support the development of more ethical coaching practices and more diverse, equitable, and inclusive physical cultures.
