Ben Sullivan

Career Path: Creative Director, Overrated Clothing
Location: Newcastle, UK

I always wanted to be my own boss, first and foremost. Being able to generate an income from being creative and utilising my marketing skills is why I chose to go to university. To refine those skills, in order to progress with my career and continue to fulfil my independent dreams.

What are you doing now? Ben Sullivan holding a tshirt

Recently I have partnered with a local charity shop YMCA, which specialises in youth homelessness within the community. This was a business model of mine in which I pitched within my time at university, and one that I am very proud of fulfilling. As of now, I am slowly releasing garments from the spring / summer 2022 collection, which has received great responses via social media and sales.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

The fact I could study in my hometown, while running my business was the main factors in deciding to study at Northumbria. Another factor was the scholarship I secured going into my undergrad degree, on the back of excelling within my previous studies. Again, with my masters where I received another scholarship, this time from Santander, which was a great incentive of how well Northumbria treat and rewards their students.

What was it like studying at Northumbria? (eg. were there a mix of lectures, seminars, team projects? Was the feedback constructive?)

There was a good mix of lectures, seminars and team projects. With it being an entrepreneurial course, there was a lot of emphasis on team building projects and how to implement findings within seamers into an entrepreneurial context.

What was the best thing about your course?

The emphasis on practical work. The emphasis on taking what you learn from the seminars, adapting it within a business context and reflecting on the outcomes.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

It gave me a platform to work on my craft while implementing my studies to do so. The facilities and emphasis on business development is what gave me the edge over other courses and businesses. I think the decision to study while work on my business plans, gave me the career edge over others, as I didn't have to lean on other for help, I had the information to go out there and make things happen.

What advice would you give somebody who is considering studying at Northumbria?

Go for it. It's one of the best universities throughout the country, and the best city in the country. The facilities and he campus provides a wide range of possibilities.
