Steve McNicol

 Chief Development Officer at Fairstone

Steve is a banking and restructuring lawyer by training but found himself drawn into professional services leadership roles relatively early in his career.

Studying and training in Newcastle was a precursor to working for Hogan Lovells' London office for 4 years. During that time he completed a 9 month secondment with Deloitte working in the team that traded and sold distressed businesses. In Steve’s own words this experience opened his eyes to the world of business leadership and his fascination with the power and importance of change.

Having made the decision to return to the North East he set up and built the Muckle LLP banking team before becoming managing partner, aged 34. After 12 years at the helm and: 3 fold growth; an office move; two re-brandings; a banking crisis; implementation of a fundamental culture change programme; and numerus awards for service excellence under his belt Steve stepped into a newly created role for the business - overseeing the firm’s client experience programme, leading on business development and promoting their regional profile.

The opportunity to join Ward Hadaway in April 2018 was, in his words, too good to miss. Again entrusted with building a client experience programme, Steve is also leading on business development strategy across the Top 100 UK law firm's three offices.

Married to Niki and with two children, Steve lives just outside Hexham. Any time that isn’t taken up travelling to and from various sporting activities with Freya and Hugo is spent as a Level 2 Triathlon coach.
