Postgraduate Research

News and information about the postgraduate community in the Humanities Department.

The postgraduate community is a vital part of the Institute of Humanities' activities. Postgraduates are a valued part of the research culture within the Institute - indeed, the first questions at any research seminar are, by tradition, reserved for postgraduate students. The Institute also provides PhD students with opportunities to give papers as part of its research seminar series.

Northumbria University is a member of the AHRC Northern Bridge Consortium, established in 2018. There are currently a number of AHRC NBC funded students working in English Literature, History and Linguistics, including several Collaborative Doctoral Awards with external organisations including Northumberland National Park Authority, the Laing Art Gallery and the National Trust. These prestigious studentships cover tuition fees, a maintenance grant (currently £15,009 per annum) and offer rigorous training opportunities. Humanities also offers internally funded studentships. For details of both of these schemes please contact Prof. Katherine Baxter for English subject areas, Prof. Charlotte Alston or Dr Katherine Butler for Music.
