Geochemistry, Ecology, Climate and Conservation (GECCO)

We provide environmental and analytical training and consultancy for industry, focusing on the sustainability of the physical, chemical and biological environments. Our work covers local to global issues in areas such as environmental and spatial analysis; policy and prevention; climatic impacts and ecosystem services.

Research in this area is focused upon the sustainability of the physical, chemical and biological environments. There is a strong focus on the application of these fields to problems from the local to global scale. We have been successful in receiving funding from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), charities such as Operation Wallacea, local government, health authorities and the Environment Agency. 

Current research focuses on:

• Environmental analysis to detect bioavailability and bio-accessibility of metals and pollutants in the environment and the associated risks to human health;
• Policy and prevention in Environmental Health;
• Ecology, ecological resilience and climatic impacts on biodiversity;
• Spatial analysis of natural and managed areas, including tropical rainforests and Natural Parks;
• Carbon capture and ecological habitats in ponds and coastal areas;
• Ecosystem services
