Where are you from?

Downham Market, Norfolk

Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

I was initially recommended by a friend who recently graduated at Northumbria University. When I visited on an Undergraduate open day my mind was made up when I saw the quality standards set around the campus, especially Sports Central, which I use daily as part of my course and leisure time also.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

Newcastle as a whole is one of the best cities I have visited. The contrast of old heritage buildings, with new shopping centres makes a perfect place for a student to be living in. It's safe, has the best nightlife you could experience, all within a close proximity to get about easily. I regularly watch Newcastle play at St. James' Park, socialise in various bars and relax with friends in the park on the outskirts of the City Centre.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

Although Newcastle is a fairly small City compared to others, there is so much to explore and do, so there's no chance of getting bored! I was impressed by the amount of students studying in Newcastle - proving it's the best place to work and play!!

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?

The people already living in Newcastle are very friendly and welcoming. They will happily have a conversation and make the City feel like home!

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

I have enjoyed meeting new people from various backgrounds. The course which I am taking is teaching me a lot, and balancing work with day to day activities is a lot of fun in an environment where there is so much that can be done

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

I have had a lot of help and advice from my tutor and lecturers. They are always willing to help with any minor issue that you may have, whether it be course related or personal, there is always someone to talk to if you are having difficulties.

Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?

I have most been inspired by a gentleman called Nick Grantham. He came in to talk to my course group shortly after starting, and shared his experiences of how he got to where he was. This inspired me to achieve what he has, and put into perspective the opportunity that I have in front of me was tremendous!

What is your favourite place on campus?

I am a fitness enthusiast, so more often than not I will be at Sports Central keeping fit! This is an amazing facility with all the equipment you could need. The prices for student memberships are very generous, additional to this the University offers bursaries for recognised sports students who are studying here, so there is no excuse not to be in the gym!

Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects? Tells us about the highlights?

I have been lucky enough to be selected along with 4 other students to travel to Zambia in June 2014 where I will be coaching children and young people sports and educating them in various health issues such as HIV/AIDS. This is one opportunity which the University offers, and throughout this academic year I have been fundraising at various high profile events to help raise money for us to travel to Zambia. To date it has been an amazing experience being part of this team, and the journey has only just begun!!

What is the best thing about your course?

I enjoy the large amount of practical work which we do in our course. No sitting in lectures being bored and falling asleep, its all hands on and much more beneficial for learning!

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

Take as many opportunities you can whilst you have the chance. These opportunities don't come around every day and Newcastle offers a lot to its students, for them to make life changing decisions.

What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

Following on from my degree I would like to work alongside professional athletes in the Strength and Conditioning field. My course has already equipped me with vital skills and knowledge to use once I have finished my Degree which will certainly be beneficial and hopefully give me the upper hand over other potential candidates for particular jobs.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

If you are unsure of whether to study at Northumbria, book an open day and experience the City and University for yourself. Words cannot describe how great it is living in Newcastle. After the open day, your mind will have been made up!

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

Since beginning University, I feel I have matured as a person, determined to succeed and do my best in everything I experience. University has helped me learn a lot about myself and what I enjoy and would like to do following on from my Degree Course.

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?
