PhD Project

I am examining the concept of ‘Democratic Policing’ in the context of International Development. My aim is to articulate a definitive model of the concept, and from that to derive a diagnostic tool for application in field International Police Development missions. When applied to a host nation the tool will act as a gap analysis, the results of which will provide practitioners with more sophisticated information on where best to target resources and other interventions.

Biography

I have just retired after 30 years police service at the rank of Chief Superintendent. In recent years I specialised in International Police Development and was seconded by the UK police service and FCO as Senior Police Adviser to the US Army in Afghanistan (1 year), Chief of Staff at the EU Police mission in Palestine (1 year) and lecturer in comparative international policing systems at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York (5 months).
