The BSc (Hons) Sport Management’s philosophy is that you will learn to become a sports manager in an authentic, dynamic, interactive and supportive environment, graduating as a fully industry-ready graduate who can think for yourself and make informed judgements. This means that, as well as actively engaging in lectures, seminars and workshops, you will undertake field trips, group projects and a 12-week sport industry placement.

Our assessments are based on the types of tasks that sports managers are required to perform, such as writing reports, making presentations, evaluating information and developing strategic plans. For example, in your final year you will use all of your knowledge and skills to plan, implement, and evaluate a sport event of your choosing. Previous events have included: charity golf days, sport dinners, events to support public health initiatives, zorb football, the RFL North East season launch, the Sky Super-league Netball Launch, and an annual five-day swimming gala.

Our sport management teaching team are active researchers in their chosen specialisms, and they routinely incorporate their expertise into their teaching.

Our team are currently researching topics as diverse as social media use by sports organisations, the transfer of sport assets from local authorities to trusts, enabling and exploiting user-created content at sports events, forming sports organisations for emerging sports, consumer influences on sport marketing, and sport as a social identity.

Our teaching is informed by current developments in sport management, usually being ahead of emerging trends.

Your critical thinking will be developed during the course when you undertake an independent research project. Your project will involve choosing an appropriate research problem that interests you, designing a study to answer a stated research question and then writing up a dissertation of 8,500 words. In addition to the write up, you will have the opportunity to present your findings and respond to rigorous questions from staff, your peers, and sport management professionals at the dissertation conference.

ADDITIONAL COSTS

This course contains an unpaid 12-week work placement, fixed in the second semester of the second year of study, for which the student is empowered and supported in sourcing, negotiating and planning a suitable experience around their interests and ambitions to enhance their study and employment prospects. The option does exist for activities to be completed in Newcastle. However, if students choose to travel and be located away from Newcastle, then they will bear these associated costs. Further, there are optional volunteering and external continual professional development courses that you may choose to participate in. These incur additional costs. Costs vary accordingly, between approximately £25-£800 per course.

How to Apply

Applications via UCAS

Most full-time and sandwich first degrees, extended degrees, DipHE and HND courses require that application is made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) Clearing House.

If you are at school or college, staff there will advise you on how to apply. If you are not at school or college, you can apply using the UCAS secure, web-based online application system ucasapply.

Applicants apply via UCAS apply wherever there is access to the internet, and full instructions and an online help facility is available. Application details can be checked and printed at any time, text for personal statements and references can be copied and pasted into applications from a word processing package, and applications can normally be processed by the relevant Clearing House within one working day once submitted. If you wish to defer your entry, you should ensure you indicate this in section 3i of the application form. Full details of application deadlines and the application fee can be found on the UCAS website. Please note, however, we are unable to consider applications for deferred entry to our Teacher Training, Nursing, Midwifery and Operating Department Practice programmes.

Application Deadlines

Equal consideration is given to all applications received at UCAS by 6.00pm on 15 January. Details of all UCAS deadlines can be found on the UCAS website www.ucas.com.

UCAS will accept applications up to 30 June, but we can only consider these if there are still vacancies in relevant subjects. You are advised to check with the University before applying for popular courses which may already be full. Candidates applying for any courses after early September must follow the UCAS Late Registration Procedure, and we will provide the appropriate form.

Decision Making Process

When we receive your application it will be forwarded to the Admissions Tutor who will consider your application in accordance with the University’s Admissions Policy.

Most subject areas do not require applicants to attend an interview as part of the selection procedure. However, if the standard procedure is to interview candidates, this is specified in the degree programme entrance requirements. Some courses, such as Health, Social Work and Teacher Training, require specific checks or requirements to be put in place during the normal selection process. These are detailed on the individual course details pages.

What Happens Next

You will receive one of the following from UCAS or our Admissions Office:

  • Conditional offer which depends on you achieving certain grades from forthcoming examinations, completing relevant checks, or other requirements prior to entry. You may be asked to send us a copy of your certificates/qualifications once these have been received to enable us to confirm your offer. Not all examination results are sent to Universities via UCAS.
  • Unconditional offer if you have already satisfied entry requirements.
  • Reject your application.

Tuition Fee Assessment

Tuition fees are set at different levels for Home/EU and International Students. Before you begin your course the University must establish your tuition fee status. In many cases, the University will be able to make this assessment without requiring any additional information.

Selection Process

Interviews

Applicants who may not have the standard entry qualifications are welcome to apply and may be interviewed. Some courses will interview as part of the selection process. This applies particularly to courses in art and design, teaching and health.

Health Screening

Applicants for Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Primary (Early Years) and Social Work will be required to complete a health questionnaire, and you may be required to attend a doctor or nurse assessment at the University Health Centre.

Prior to beginning your programme, all applicants to Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy are advised to start a course of Hepatitis B vaccinations, available from your own GP. In addition, Midwifery applicants must provide evidence before they commence training that they are immune to Hepatitis B or have Hepatitis B non-carried status.

Applicants to these courses who have had contact with MRSA in the previous 6 months may be asked to provide evidence that they are not colonised by submitting negative swabs results prior to commencement of training. Alternatively, you may be screened on commencement of the programme.

All applicants will receive vaccination screening at the University Health Centre on commencement of their programme.

Disclosure of Criminal Background

To help the University reduce the risk of harm or injury to any member of its community caused by the criminal behaviour of other students, it must know about any relevant criminal convictions an applicant has.

Relevant criminal convictions are only those convictions for offences against the person, whether of a violent or sexual nature, and convictions for offences involving unlawfully supplying controlled drugs or substances where the conviction concerns commercial drug dealing or trafficking. Convictions that are spent (as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974) are not considered to be relevant and you should not reveal them - unless you are applying for one of the courses outlined within the following paragraph.

If you are applying for courses in teaching, health, social work and courses involving work with children or vulnerable adults, you must complete the section of your UCAS application form entitled ‘Criminal Convictions’. You must disclose anycriminal convictions, including spent sentences and cautions (including verbal cautions) and bindover orders. Further information on how to complete this section is available from the UCAS booklet ‘How to Apply’. For these courses, applicants are required to undergo police clearance for entry and will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced disclosure form. 

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children. It replaces the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). Access to the DBS checking service is only available to registered employers who are entitled by law to ask an individual to reveal their full criminal history, including spent convictions - also known as asking 'an exempted question'. The University is such a 'registered employer' and will send you the appropriate documents to fill in if you are offered a place in the course.

If you are convicted of a relevant criminal offence after you have applied, you must tell UCAS and the University. Do not send details of the offence; simply tell UCAS and the University that you have a relevant criminal conviction. You may then be asked to supply more details.

Anti-fraud Checks

Please note that both UCAS and the University follow anti-fraud procedures to detect and prevent fraudulent applications. If it is found that an applicant supplies a fraudulent application then it will be withdrawn.

Plagiarism

Applicants suspected of providing, or found to have provided, false information will be referred to UCAS if their application was made via UCAS. The same is true for applicants who are suspected of omitting, or found to have omitted, information that they are required to disclose according to UCAS regulations. Applications identified by UCAS’s Similarity Detection software to contain plagiarised material will be considered on an individual basis by Admissions Staff, taking into account the nature, relevance and importance of the plagiarism. The University reserves the right to cancel an application or withdraw any offer made if it is found that an application contains false, plagiarised or misleading information.

Extra

The Extra process enables applicants who have not been offered a place, or have declined all offers received, can use EXTRA to apply for other courses that still have vacancies before Clearing starts. The Extra process normally operates from late February until the end of June and Applicants should use the Course Search facility at UCAS to find which courses have vacancies.

Clearing

If you have not succeeded in gaining a place at your firm or insurance university, UCAS will send you details about Clearing, the procedure which matches course vacancies with students who do not have a university place. Information about degree vacancies at Northumbria is published in the national press; and you can also find information on our dedicated Clearing web pages during this period. We operate a Helpline - 0191 40 60 901 - throughout the Clearing period for enquiries about course vacancies.

Adjustment
If an applicant has both met and exceeded the conditions of their firmly accepted offer, they will have up to five calendar days from the time their place was confirmed (or A level results day, whichever is the later) to research places more appropriate to their performance. Applicants will have to nominate themselves for this system, and their eligibility will be confirmed by the institution they apply to adjust to.

Academic Language Skills for Sport Exercise and Rehabilitation (Core – for International and EU students only,0 Credits)

Academic skills when studying away from your home country can differ due to cultural and language differences in teaching and assessment practices. This module is designed to support your transition in the use and practice of technical language and subject specific skills around assessments and teaching provision in your chosen subject. The overall aim of this module is to develop your abilities to read and study effectively for academic purposes; to develop your skills in analysing and using source material in seminars and academic writing and to develop your use and application of language and communications skills to a higher level.

The topics you will cover on the module include:

• Understanding assignment briefs and exam questions.
• Developing academic writing skills, including citation, paraphrasing, and summarising.
• Practising ‘critical reading’ and ‘critical writing’
• Planning and structuring academic assignments (e.g. essays, reports and presentations).
• Avoiding academic misconduct and gaining credit by using academic sources and referencing effectively.
• Listening skills for lectures.
• Speaking in seminar presentations.

Examining Sport Participation introduces the importance and value of understanding the factors and outcomes related to participation in sport. It does this by outlining how sport participation can be the focus of research and provides examples of what can be learned through the systematic study of sport participation. The module aims to develop students’ foundational knowledge of the research process, how to read and understand scientific studies, as well as the tools used to collect data and how it can be evaluated. Furthermore, students will also develop their awareness of the importance of researching sport participation to enhance applied practice.

‘Professional Skills for Sport’ is designed to develop your knowledge, understanding and application of skills relevant to sport graduates. This will include academic (writing, presentation, referencing, studying), personal (leadership, teamwork, reflection, communication) and professional (career development and planning, time management) skills. Specifically in regards to the content covered within ‘Professional Skills for Sport’, the academic skills will be based on the standards currently stipulated and used at Northumbria University. You will also demonstrate a theoretical understanding and gain the ability to reflect on those personal skills learned and covered through the module in both from an individual and team/group perspective. Furthermore, you will gain an understanding of how to plan for a career within the sports industry through the use of the academic and personal skills covered in addition to information currently utilised in the external working environment for gaining and retaining employment.

You will learn about the key principles and theories of sport marketing. The ‘Principles of Sport Marketing’ module introduces you to the core concepts, functions and the internal and external environmental of marketing, applied to the sport industry; which will help you to develop an initial understanding of the processes, strategies and techniques involved in marketing, by identifying links between theory and practice.
On this module you will use literature which helps to explain key sport marketing concepts, such as;
• Sport branding;
• Sport sponsorship;
• Relationship marketing;
• Market research;
• Sport consumer culture.
Sport marketing is more dynamic and complex than you may have previously thought, which is what makes this such an exciting module to study. Throughout this module you will explore sport marketing in a global context; the aim is to provide you with sensitivity to and an understanding of societal and cultural differences. In particular we focus on the role of research in the development of successful global marketing strategies. You will explore the strategies adopted by sport marketers, non-sport marketer’s use of sport as a promotional tool, and sports consumer’s responses to these strategies. We will scrutinize sport marketing strategies adopted by global sport organisations, NGBs, and local clubs; providing you with an understanding of similarities and differences between the private, public and third sectors.
Generally through your active engagement with this module, you will develop an interest and curiosity in concepts related to the marketing of sport and marketing through sport.

On this module you will learn about the management of a sport organisation’s human and financial resources. The module content will explain the purpose of human resource planning and develop your understanding of key aspects of the human resource management (HRM) process. You will also gain an appreciation of current issues in HRM within the sports industry. The module will also provide you with an introduction to economics, recognising its relevance to sports organisations. Finally, the module will enable you to develop basic knowledge, skills and competencies in the areas of financial and management accounting.

Sport Research in Practice (Core,20 Credits)

Sport Research in Practice moves you further on in your research enquiry by supporting you to generate a research question, and to learn how to collect and analyse data to answer this.

In order to do this you will be introduced to key concepts, perspectives and activities in social research relevant to your study of sport. You will develop knowledge and understanding about:
- research questions and rationales
- belief systems about what we can know and how we can know it (Ontology and Epistemology),
- how we can go about finding out? (Methodology),
- collecting or generating data (Methods) and;
- analysing and interpreting findings (Analysis).

You will learn how to bring all these elements together by working ethically through a research process and engaging in practical research design using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The module focuses on practical interviewing and questionnaires experience, as well as ethically appropriate data collection and analysis. Ultimately, the module prepares you to cover all requirements of a research dissertation in level 6, in terms of theoretical understanding and practical use of research tools and subsequent analysis.

The sport sector has grown rapidly into a multi-billion pound global industry and is now recognised as big business. You will focus on the business principles that sit at its core and consider key factors, processes, concepts and ideas pertinent to the development of the world’s most creative industry. You will examine the work of sport business professionals, agencies, organisations and governing bodies to gain a critical appreciation of how business principles are applied to the sports industry. You will be encouraged and supported to tailor your creative and innovative spirit to the development of new sport product and service ideas and apply them to a real-world case study situation. This module will help to coalesce your critical insight and application of the principles of strategy, governance, marketing, finance, legal issues and
performance management through a consumer, business-focused lens. The 20-credit yearlong Unilang modules (stages 1 – 5 depending on language) aim to encourage a positive attitude to language learning and to develop and practise the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing introducing the basic/increasingly complex grammatical structures and vocabulary of the spoken and written language (depending on stage) and developing your ability to respond appropriately in spoken and written form in simple and increasingly complex everyday situations.

These modules also introduce you to the country and the culture of the country. In doing this, Unilang modules are intended to encourage and support international mobility; to enhance employability at home and abroad; to improve communication skills in the foreign language and in English as well as cultural awareness.

Sustainable Strategies (Optional,20 Credits)

1. Understanding strategy as a concept and developing a broad perspective on different schools that comprise it.
2. Deliberate perspective: Examining the premises and application of design, planning and positioning. Examining the limitations and moorings and critiquing analytical frameworks, some of which have been delivered in level 4 and level 5. E.g. SWOT and SSWOT (sustainability SWOT), five forces, value chain, value activities (including a focus on social and environmental value) and generic strategies will be looked at in conjunction to build on prior discrete knowledge students will have of these concepts.
3. Emergent perspective: The premises of strategic learning, strategic leadership (including power), culture as some of the emergent perspectives.
4. Innovation, value creation and value appropriation from an ethics and broadly scoped sustainability perspective.
5. Understanding how delivering innovation has become the holy grail of firm pursuits, and how it relates with different stakeholders. This will include a perspective on the digital internet enabled environment to examine path breaking innovation at a macro level in interface with firm capabilities to survive, adapt and sustain growth.
6. A stakeholder view on sustainability: Understanding the wider set of stakeholders that business organisations need to keep in perspective & how it affects long run sustainability.

Sport Event Management (Core,20 Credits)

You will learn how to plan, implement, and evaluate a sport event. This module is designed to provide you with a vocationally-relevant sport management experience, founded upon theoretical principles. You are required to work in a group to plan and deliver a sports event, and then individually evaluate one aspect of the event. The module is intended to promote entrepreneurship and creativity as well as personal and collective responsibility by means of a real-life challenge.

On this module you will conduct a critical analysis of sport event literature, evaluate planning models, conduct market research, and reflect on the acquisition of graduate attributes, such as;
· Creativity
· Resilience;
· Teamwork and leadership;
· Advanced communication skills;
· Entrepreneurship and Employability;
· Cultural awareness and ethical behaviour within the sport environment.

Planning, implementing, and evaluating a sports event is challenging. It will test your knowledge and skills across a number of academic disciplines. Similarly, the live project assessments will add a new dimension to your learning experience. They are designed to be authentic, as such you will have a significant degree of autonomy in how you develop your team, conceptualise your event plan, and begin the implementation process. Due to the autonomous, yet supportive, teaching philosophy adopted on this module, you will find it a highly rewarding experience.

Generally through your active engagement with this module, you will develop a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your professional competencies in a range of skills and attributes, which are transferable and desirable in a number of industry sectors.

This module will develop your knowledge of the relationship between sport managers and the media. You will develop skills required to initiate, maintain and enhance positive relationships with different publics. The module will briefly examine the increasing interest of the media in sport and the impact on sport management. The focus of the module is on the role of media management within the public relations strategies of sport organisations. Skills required in managing relations with the media and to influence the portrayal of the organisation's image will be covered. The module will consider the scope of media management from positive copy in the local newspaper, to events organised in conjunction with the media. Finally, the involvement of the sport manager with print, broadcast and social media, and associated competencies and skills will be covered.

Sport Development, Management and Coaching Dissertation (UG) (Core,40 Credits)

On this module you will learn about and will conduct an applied research project. You will develop in-depth knowledge of a specific area in sport (within the remit of your degree programme) in relation to a research problem of contemporary relevance to the industry or profession. You will do this by conducting and writing up a research project, through independent study, under the supervision of a tutor. As such, you will use the knowledge and skills previously developed in level 5, Sport Research and Practice and multiple-knowledge based modules, to engage in the research process. You will define a research question, critically review previous literature, design and implement an empirical study, after ethical approval. You will learn to design a project that is well planned, coherent, logical and ethical. After this you will learn how to disseminate research in written and poster format. You will learn how to apply the knowledge you create to make practice recommendations.
