Northumbria University provides outstanding facilities for renewable and sustainable energy technologies. For example our New and Renewable Energy Laboratory is an excellent resource for research into power networks, wind energy, photovoltaics and battery testing for electric vehicles. All our facilities are backed up by a team of technicians who will give support and advice when you need it.

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research. Our use of lecture capture software will help you revise challenging material.

To facilitate group projects there is a working space called The Hub that’s well equipped for meetings and working with IT. The Zone is another area that’s popular with students undertaking group work or individual study.

Northumbria’s strong research ethos is an essential aspect of how you will develop as a critical, reflective and independent thinker. With our problem-solving approach you’ll acquire a wide range of research and analytical skills as you progress through the course. These skills will come together in the master’s project that you’ll undertake, which will require independent research and appropriate techniques of inquiry, critical evaluation and synthesis.

MSc Renewable and Sustainable Technologies has been accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Chartered status is associated with improved employability and higher salaries.

The course will equip you with the expertise to design, optimise, apply and evaluate renewable and sustainable energy technologies. Your master’s project will extend your practical experience of industry-standard hardware and software tools. At the same time you’ll develop transferable key skills and personal attributes that promote employability and lifelong learning.

By the end of this course you’ll be in an excellent position to start or continue a career in renewable and sustainable energy technologies. Renewable energy production could increase by up to 1,000% by 2050 compared to 2010, according to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, so there will be a pressing need for well-trained professionals.  

You could also undertake a postgraduate research degree such as an MPhil, PhD and Professional Doctorate. If you decide to start up your own business, it’s good to know that the combined turnover of our graduates’ start-up companies is higher than that of any other UK university. 

Whatever you decide to do, you will have the transferable skills that employers expect from a master’s graduate from Northumbria University. How to Apply

How to Apply

Application for most courses is direct to the University via our online application form. Simply click on the 'Apply Online' button you will see on each of our course entries.

However, there are some courses where the application method is not directly to the University. These are:

 

Postgraduate Research
If you wish to apply for postgraduate research then please submit a research enquiry.

Application Deadlines 

Whilst most of our courses do not set an exact deadline for applications, you are advised to apply early to secure your place and organise any sponsorship or funding. Overseas students should submit applications to us by no later than 31 July for courses starting in early September or 1 December for courses that commence in January. This allows sufficient time to process our decision, for you to obtain visas and to organise your accommodation and travel arrangements.

Graduate Teacher Training Courses
Equal consideration is given to all applications received by UCAS Teacher Training by the main application deadline, details of all deadlines can be found on the UTT website.

 Master of Fine Art (MFA)

Master of Fine Art (MFA) We encourage all applications to the MFA programme for entry in September 2017 to apply prior to our guaranteed application review date of 1st June 2017. After this date, we will review applications subject to there being remaining spaces on the programme.

 

Decision Making Process

Most courses require at least one reference, but some may need two. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure Northumbria receives a satisfactory academic reference. If you have not been in education for a number of years, then a reference from your employer may be acceptable.

We try to reply to applicants as soon as possible but you should receive a response within 10 working days, and this will be one of the following.

  • Conditional offer which will normally be upon the completion of your undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification and achieving a particular classification or grade. You will be required to send us a confirmation that you have passed your current degree course as soon as you receive notification to enable us to confirm your offer. 
  • Unconditional offer is made if you have already met the entry requirements of your chosen course 
  • Reject your application 

You will be asked to confirm your acceptance in writing of any offer made.

Fairness and Transparency

All reasonable effort will be made to ensure that no prospective or existing student is unreasonably treated less favourably on the grounds of age, race, colour, nationality, ethnic origin, creed, disability, sexual orientation, gender, marital or parental/carer status, political belief or social or economic class, or any other type of discrimination.

Tuition Fee Assessment
Tuition fees are set at different levels for Home/EU and International Students. Before you begin your course the University must establish your tuition fee status. In many cases, the University will be able to make this assessment without requiring any additional information.

Guidance can be found on the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) website www.ukcisa.org.uk to help you understand how Higher Education Institutions (HEI's) make an assessment on your fee status.

Selection Process 

Interviews
Applicants who may not have the standard entry qualifications are welcome to apply and may be interviewed. Some courses will interview as part of the selection process. This applies particularly to courses in art and design, teaching and health.

Health Screening
Applicants for Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Primary (Early Years) and Social Work will be required to complete a health questionnaire. They may be required to attend for doctor or nurse assessment at the University Health Centre.

Prior to beginning their programme, all applicants to Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy are advised to start a course of Hepatitis B vaccinations, available from their own GP. In addition, Midwifery applicants must provide evidence before they commence training that they are immune to Hepatitis B or have Hepatitis B non-carried status.

Applicants to these courses who have had contact with MRSA in the previous 6 months may be asked to provide evidence that they are not colonised by submitting negative swabs results prior to commencement of training. Alternatively, they may be screened on commencement of the programme.

All applicants will receive vaccination screening at the University Health Centre on commencement of their programme.

Disclosure of Criminal Background
To help the University reduce the risk of harm or injury to any member of its community caused by the criminal behaviour of other students, it must know about any relevant criminal convictions an applicant has.

Relevant criminal convictions are only those convictions for offences against the person, whether of a violent or sexual nature, and convictions for offences involving unlawfully supplying controlled drugs or substances where the conviction concerns commercial drug dealing or trafficking. Convictions that are spent (as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974) are not considered to be relevant and you should not reveal them.

If you are applying for courses in teaching, health, social work and courses involving work with children or vulnerable adults, you must complete the section of your UCAS application form entitled 'Criminal Convictions'. You must disclose any criminal convictions, including spent sentences and cautions (including verbal cautions) and bindover orders. Further information on how to complete this section is available from the UCAS booklet 'How to Apply'. For these courses, applicants are required to undergo police clearance for entry and will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced disclosure form. The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children. It replaces the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). Access to the DBS checking service is only available to registered employers who are entitled by law to ask an individual to reveal their full criminal history, including spent convictions - also known as asking 'an exempted question'. The University is such a 'registered employer' and will send you the appropriate documents to fill in if you are offered a place in the course.

If you are convicted of a relevant criminal offence after you have applied, you must inform the university immediately. Do not send details of the offence; simply tell the University that you have a relevant criminal conviction. You may then be asked to supply more details.

Anti-fraud Checks
Please note that the University follows anti-fraud procedures to detect and prevent fraudulent applications. If it is found that an applicant supplies a fraudulent application then it will be withdrawn.

Plagiarism
The University reserves the right to cancel an application or withdraw any offer made if it is found that an application contains false, plagiarised or misleading information.

 

Disabled Students

Northumbria welcomes enquiries and applications from disabled students whether disability is due to mobility or sensory impairment, specific learning difficulties, mental health issues or a medical condition. Applications from disabled students are processed in the usual way, but applicants should declare their disability at the application stage so that the University can contact them to assess how to meet any support needs they may have. Building Energy and Environmental Modelling (Core, 20 Credits)

You will learn about powerful new and emerging tools for modelling building energy systems and control. You will develop skills for simulating energy systems of relevance to buildings as well as modelling air flow in and around buildings. You will learn how to build dynamic energy, ventilation and comfort models for multizone buildings.
You will investigate building thermal response including comfort, energy, interzone air movement and future weather modelling of multizone buildings.

Research Methods (Core, 20 Credits)

Training in research methods provides researchers with an understanding of the 'dos' and 'don'ts' that are associated with employing particular approaches to the collection and analysis of data. Awareness of research methodologies and methods will enable researchers to practice appropriate techniques and to implement methods accurately. The primary aim of the module is to inform and sensitise you to the choices that are available when planning to undertake a research project. This includes making you aware of a selected range of qualitative and quantitative research methods that can be employed to collect and analyse primary and secondary data arising from studies using these methodological paradigms. Such awareness will enable you to make appropriate choices when executing your own research investigation. Of equal importance, the module will also introduce you to a range of academic skills that will support you during your programme of study in addition to the execution of your research project.

Sustainable Development for Engineering Practitioners (Core, 20 Credits)

This module will develop your understanding of the fundamentals of sustainable and ethical development for engineering practitioners, requiring your consideration of role and responsibility of the engineer within society. You will explore the fundamentals of sustainable development as they relate to decision making in engineering, for example consideration of; legislation, economics, energy, materials, environment and society.

During your study you will consider the challenges engineering activities present society and the future of our planet and seek solutions through the use of various techniques and tools such as the triple bottom line, stakeholder analysis, the circular economy, carbon footprint, material and energy supply chains and risk, the ethics of sustainable development and software tools for eco audit and life cycle assessment.

You will learn how to present a rational argument for sustainable solutions using both qualitative and quantitative data sources and tools using a wide range of published literature and also from your own experience.

Thermo-Mechanical Energy Conversion Systems (Core, 20 Credits)

You will learn about technologies for the utilisation of renewable and sustainable energy sources for heat and power production using heat engines and other types of converters, specifically about the followings:

• Solar, biomass, hydrogen and waste thermal energy resources
• Principles of internal and external combustion engines for thermal conversion of Renewable Energy; Design and thermodynamics of Stirling Engines
• Solar thermal energy: overview of low and high temperature solar thermal energy conversion. Design and analysis of solar collectors for low temperature solar thermal energy conversion. High temperature solar power production technologies using concentrating mirrors
• Heat and power plants operating with combustion of solid biomass
• Technologies for production of biofuels. Design of energy units operating on biofuels
• Geo-thermal: conversion theory and technology, measurement techniques and design considerations
• Hydrogen technology and fuel cells
• Nuclear power stations

You will learn about new design techniques and concepts in engineering and optimisation methods, specifically about the followings:

• Design concepts: direct and inverse design, integrated design, multidisciplinary design, knowledge based design, design for X
• Design process: conceptual/system-level/detail design, design decision support systems, multi-criteria decision analysis
• Design for reliability: fault and failure, reliability analysis, fault tree analysis, reliability block diagram, failure mode and effect analysis, redundancy allocation, fail to safe design, fault tolerated design
• Design under uncertainties: uncertainties in engineering design, deterministic and robust design, design sensitivity analysis, Monte Carlo and Taguchi methods

Wind, Photovoltaic and Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems (Core, 20 Credits)

You will learn about the theory and technology of renewable energy conversion systems, specifically about the followings:

• Renewable resources, their characteristics and stochastic modelling
• Wind turbines: components and performance measures, conceptual design, structural loads, blade and tower structural design considerations, operation and control
• Aerodynamics of wind turbines: blade element momentum theory, blade aerodynamic design
• Photovoltaic: conversion theory and technology, sizing and design considerations
• Storage systems: power and cost modelling
• Hybrid systems: power, cost and reliability/availability analyses and system architecture design for various configurations including wind, PV, battery, diesel and fuel cell

Research Project (Core, 60 Credits)

The module will build upon the concepts and theories presented to you during KB7030 Research Methods. It will require you to develop, consolidate, and apply your independent research, academic study, and research project management skills to the investigation of a topic of your own choice (or a topic that has been pre-approved and recommended by the Module Leader) that is relevant to your programme of study. You will undertake analytical and evaluative research that will result in the production of a Research Publication, either as a Journal Paper or a Dissertation. If you choose to present your findings as a Journal Paper, you will comply with the presentation and formatting requirements stipulated by the publishing house of the pre-selected, module-approved research journal. If you undertake a work-based study, you are not permitted to present your findings as a Journal Paper. Alternatively, if you choose to present your findings as a Dissertation, you will undertake a study that will lead to the presentation of either a traditional or work-based Dissertation and comply with the presentation and formatting requirements stipulated in the Module Handbook. Pre-selected, module-approved research journals to which you will ‘theoretically’ aim to submit your Journal Paper will be listed in the Module Handbook.
