What will I learn on this module?

You will be introduced to a strategic overview of property portfolio management, which includes the corporate occupier, reflecting the changes in property management practice. The module is intended to provide you with an insight into property and strategic asset management. This includes identifying and analysing current business trends and changing patterns of property occupation set within the context of a legal structure that must be employed by the real estate surveyor.

You will study a range of topics to support the above including:

Property management
Strategic Asset management
Portfolio management
Exit strategies and Insolvency
Assignments and sub lettings
Sustainability issues
Office markets, users and flexible working arrangements
Retail issues
The leisure market
Industrial markets


The programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the academic content and skills development within the module is aimed at developing you both in terms of your current and future career aspirations.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a combination of lectures together with practical based workshops when possible. Lectures will be supplemented with guest lectures from local surveyors employed in the asset management sector and will be used to reinforce and focus key issues, concepts, techniques, tools and topics. In effect acting as a framework for professional surveying practice.

Part of your learning is by participating in in-class discussions in seminars made up of the various groups within your cohort. This group learning ensures an exposure to the communication skills required by modern day surveying graduates in the workplace. As this module looks at the key markets in the property sector which are constantly changing, students will be directed to additional and up-to-date reading material on the eLearning Portal to assist in their learning.

If you are in employment your workplace will be the main learning environment, in effect acting as a framework for corporate real estate management. However, tutor support will be available via drop-in sessions throughout the module study period. If you are in employment it is recognised that there is the need for modes of blended learning delivery, experiential assessment, and opportunities to combine work and study through independent study, embedded learning opportunities, and relevant communications technologies. Lecture capture will be used to elaborate on the content contained in any teaching material along with audio recording and notes to support presentations on key topics.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Your main support is via the small seminars during the timetabled classes whereby students can raise any concerns they have on the assessment. . Informal feedback will be provided within the seminar activities allowing you to use it to improve your work. Formal feedback will be given within the University timescales and will give you more guidance on how to improve your work and your transferable skills. Finally, tutors will respond to any generic questions posed via the module’s eLearning Portal so that the whole student cohort can benefit.

If you are in employment your workplace will be the main learning environment, however, tutor support will be available via drop-in sessions throughout the module study period. The eLP, telephone and email will be used as a means of communication once the initial briefings have taken place and work-based visits will be made by tutors if appropriate.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
• MLO1: Critically assess the obligations and responsibilities of the property /asset manager both for investors and corporate occupiers.
• MLO2: Analyse legal documents and apply the appropriate procedural actions required within an evolving business environment.
• ML03: Communicate in a professional way, both verbal and written with a variety of clients.

• MLO4: You will research and evaluate data, identify solutions, demonstrate judgement and communicate findings.

How will I be assessed?

Summative assessment: Assessment (100%) will be a report (3,000 words plus Heads of Terms).

Formative assessment: Seminar activities will involve students in developing problem solving techniques through the use of case studies and real life scenarios. Informal feedback will be provided within the seminar activities allowing you to use it to improve your work.

Formal feedback will be given within the University timescales and will give you more guidance on how to improve your work and your transferable skills.

The assessment will assess MLO1-05.

Module abstract

In this module the lectures will be given by staff and guest lecturers, where appropriate, giving the student the opportunity to learn from a professional in the field with an insight into current issues in property and business. Seminar activities will then involve students in developing problem solving techniques through the use of case studies and real life scenarios. Site visits when possible will also be incorporated to aid the student in bringing together theory and practice. At the end of the module the student will be able to understand the often conflicting requirements of the various stakeholders within the property and business fields and will have developed analytical and communication skills to help them deal with this.

If you are in employment your workplace will act as a framework for corporate real estate management to develop your skills and knowledge.
