Are you interested in gaining a Masters qualification that is highly valued by employers and applicable to a range of industries? This two-year course will give you project management skills that are widely transferable.

Project management offers excellent starting salaries for those entering the profession with prospects of enjoying salaries between £20,000 and £27,500 for those under the aged of 24. With career progression and experience this can rise up to and in excess of £70,000. The average (median) project management salary, as identified in a 2018 Salary and Market Trends Survey undertaken by the Association for Project Management (APM) is £47,500.

The course covers topics such as how to assess project feasibility, how to manage risks in projects, how to keep people working together, and how to develop a portfolio of projects. The curriculum is aligned with the academic requirements of the Association for Project Management (APM), which is the UK’s largest professional body for project managers.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full- to gain all-important work experience and employability skills. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to source opportunities and to perfect their CV but ultimately the onus is on the student to secure the internship position through a competitive application process.

Research

If you take this option, you may be assigned to our Library and Information Management Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

There’s no need to have completed previous studies in project management and we welcome applicants from a variety of academic backgrounds.

Our teaching methods include lectures, small group seminars, workshops, master classes and field visits. As this is a Masters course there is a significant element of independent learning and self-motivated reflection.

You’ll undertake a final Masters level research project that will hone your skills in evaluating and applying research techniques and methodologies. The topic of the project will reflect your own unique interests.

Assessments are designed to give feedback as well as to monitor your level of achievement. The assessed projects will enable you to test your skills in ways that relate to current industrial practice. Specific assessment methods include assignments, written reports, exams, group presentations and debates.

The Advanced Practice semester will be assessed via a report and presentation about your internship, study abroad or research group activities.

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research. Our use of lecture capture software will help you revise challenging material. You’ll have access to industry-standard software such as Microsoft Project, IBM SPSS and NVivo.

The 24/7 University Library achieves some of the highest levels of student satisfaction in the UK and has held the Cabinet Office accreditation for Customer Service Excellence since 2010. It has excellent digital resources with over 100 databases for independent learning as well as half a million electronic books and another 500,000 print books.

To facilitate group projects there are dedicated student working spaces, such as ‘The Hub’, an area that is well equipped for meetings and working with IT. The Zone is another area that’s popular with students undertaking group work or individual study.

As a Masters student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will support you in your final independent research project, where you choose to produce either a research paper or a dissertation. Your supervisor will provide guidance from its development through to completion.

This course will open up opportunities in project management roles in construction and many other industries. Past graduates have gone on to work for multinational companies such as BAE Systems, Volvo Car Group, NHS, Siemens, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Shell and Virgin Money. Job roles have included project managers, programme managers, project portfolio managers, management consultants, business developers, entrepreneurs, quality managers and directors.

If you decide to start up your own business, it’s good to know that the combined turnover of our graduates’ start-up companies is higher than that of any other UK university.

How to Apply

How to Apply

Application for most courses is direct to the University via our online application form. Simply click on the 'Apply Online' button you will see on each of our course entries.

However, there are some courses where the application method is not directly to the University. These are:

 

Postgraduate Research
If you wish to apply for postgraduate research then please submit a research enquiry.

Application Deadlines 

Whilst most of our courses do not set an exact deadline for applications, you are advised to apply early to secure your place and organise any sponsorship or funding. Overseas students should submit applications to us by no later than 31 July for courses starting in early September or 1 December for courses that commence in January. This allows sufficient time to process our decision, for you to obtain visas and to organise your accommodation and travel arrangements.

Graduate Teacher Training Courses
Equal consideration is given to all applications received by UCAS Teacher Training by the main application deadline, details of all deadlines can be found on the UTT website.

 Master of Fine Art (MFA)

Master of Fine Art (MFA) We encourage all applications to the MFA programme for entry in September 2017 to apply prior to our guaranteed application review date of 1st June 2017. After this date, we will review applications subject to there being remaining spaces on the programme.

 

Decision Making Process

Most courses require at least one reference, but some may need two. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure Northumbria receives a satisfactory academic reference. If you have not been in education for a number of years, then a reference from your employer may be acceptable.

We try to reply to applicants as soon as possible but you should receive a response within 10 working days, and this will be one of the following.

  • Conditional offer which will normally be upon the completion of your undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification and achieving a particular classification or grade. You will be required to send us a confirmation that you have passed your current degree course as soon as you receive notification to enable us to confirm your offer. 
  • Unconditional offer is made if you have already met the entry requirements of your chosen course 
  • Reject your application 

You will be asked to confirm your acceptance in writing of any offer made.

Fairness and Transparency

Tuition Fee Assessment
Tuition fees are set at different levels for Home/EU and International Students. Before you begin your course the University must establish your tuition fee status. In many cases, the University will be able to make this assessment without requiring any additional information.

Guidance can be found on the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) website www.ukcisa.org.uk to help you understand how Higher Education Institutions (HEI's) make an assessment on your fee status.

Selection Process 

Interviews
Applicants who may not have the standard entry qualifications are welcome to apply and may be interviewed. Some courses will interview as part of the selection process. This applies particularly to courses in art and design, teaching and health.

Health Screening
Applicants for Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Primary (Early Years) and Social Work will be required to complete a health questionnaire. They may be required to attend for doctor or nurse assessment at the University Health Centre.

Prior to beginning their programme, all applicants to Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy are advised to start a course of Hepatitis B vaccinations, available from their own GP. In addition, Midwifery applicants must provide evidence before they commence training that they are immune to Hepatitis B or have Hepatitis B non-carried status.

Applicants to these courses who have had contact with MRSA in the previous 6 months may be asked to provide evidence that they are not colonised by submitting negative swabs results prior to commencement of training. Alternatively, they may be screened on commencement of the programme.

All applicants will receive vaccination screening at the University Health Centre on commencement of their programme.

Disclosure of Criminal Background
To help the University reduce the risk of harm or injury to any member of its community caused by the criminal behaviour of other students, it must know about any relevant criminal convictions an applicant has.

Relevant criminal convictions are only those convictions for offences against the person, whether of a violent or sexual nature, and convictions for offences involving unlawfully supplying controlled drugs or substances where the conviction concerns commercial drug dealing or trafficking. Convictions that are spent (as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974) are not considered to be relevant and you should not reveal them.

If you are applying for courses in teaching, health, social work and courses involving work with children or vulnerable adults, you must complete the section of your UCAS application form entitled 'Criminal Convictions'. You must disclose any criminal convictions, including spent sentences and cautions (including verbal cautions) and bindover orders. Further information on how to complete this section is available from the UCAS booklet 'How to Apply'. For these courses, applicants are required to undergo police clearance for entry and will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced disclosure form. The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children. It replaces the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). Access to the DBS checking service is only available to registered employers who are entitled by law to ask an individual to reveal their full criminal history, including spent convictions - also known as asking 'an exempted question'. The University is such a 'registered employer' and will send you the appropriate documents to fill in if you are offered a place in the course.

If you are convicted of a relevant criminal offence after you have applied, you must inform the university immediately. Do not send details of the offence; simply tell the University that you have a relevant criminal conviction. You may then be asked to supply more details.

Anti-fraud Checks
Please note that the University follows anti-fraud procedures to detect and prevent fraudulent applications. If it is found that an applicant supplies a fraudulent application then it will be withdrawn.

Plagiarism
The University reserves the right to cancel an application or withdraw any offer made if it is found that an application contains false, plagiarised or misleading information.

 

Disabled Students

Northumbria welcomes enquiries and applications from disabled students whether disability is due to mobility or sensory impairment, specific learning difficulties, mental health issues or a medical condition. Research Methods (Core, 20 Credits)

Training in research methods provides researchers with an understanding of the 'dos' and 'don'ts' that are associated with employing particular approaches to the collection and analysis of data. Awareness of research methodologies and methods will enable researchers to practice appropriate techniques and to implement methods accurately. The primary aim of the module is to inform and sensitise you to the choices that are available when planning to undertake a research project. This includes making you aware of a selected range of qualitative and quantitative research methods that can be employed to collect and analyse primary and secondary data arising from studies using these methodological paradigms. Such awareness will enable you to make appropriate choices when executing your own research investigation. Of equal importance, the module will also introduce you to a range of academic skills that will support you during your programme of study in addition to the execution of your research project.

Project, Programme and Portfolio Management (Core, 20 Credits)

You will develop conceptual understanding around, appreciate the characteristics of, and be able to evaluate, projects. You will also develop an understanding of the project management role, and the relevant approaches, skills, tools and techniques available to a practicing project manager. You will be introduced to the dynamics associated with project teams and stakeholders. The module will consider projects within the wider context of programmes and portfolio management. This management of projects, programmes and portfolios is often referred to as P3 management, thus, you will have a basic understanding of complex scenarios of multiple and major projects environments.
You will be able to critically evaluate project management knowledge and competencies, reflect on lessons from project case studies, as well as the processes, methods and technologies used by Project Managers and Project Management Offices (PMO’s) in P3 management. You will also embrace the necessary ethical and professional standards to potentially attain competence in the future management of P3 projects.

Project Organisations & Information Management (Core, 20 Credits)

In Project Organisation and Information Management you will explore leadership issues, critically reviewing a range of models and practices with particular emphasis on the leader as a communicator and negotiator. You will be introduced to a variety of approaches to organisational analysis thus enabling you to challenge and critique, both organisational practice, and the theories, models and frameworks underpinning management, business and organisation. Mainstream views of organisational practices and learning are introduced, with progression to exploring alternative ways of ‘seeing’ organisation and organising. This approach will enable you to develop your critical thinking and draws on contemporary research to explore alternative ways of organising. You will also explore the value of information system within the organisations. Specifically you will consider the evaluation and application of appropriate strategies for the management of information systems at intra- and inter-organisational levels, and how they might affect the use of Information Modelling applications. You will identify the various types of knowledge in organisations and analyse the management of that knowledge and information flows throughout the different project life-cycle stages. An important aspect of the module is the identification and evaluation of standards and procedures underlying the exchange of project information, including processes connected with supply chain integration, electronic commerce and mobile commerce on the project environment. You will also evaluate beneficial and detrimental effects of using real-time network tools for project collaboration.

Project change, risk and opportunities management (Core, 20 Credits)

You will learn about the theories and practices that inform the steering of projects for the delivery of benefits and how they enable you to respond to the challenges of managing organisational change initiatives.
The module integrates several topics under each of the competencies within relevant Project Management Bodies of Knowledge: Contextual, Behavioural and Technical.
You will learn to:
• ensure that benefits are understood and pursued through reliable decision-making
• promote effective identification of risks and opportunities throughout the life-cycle of projects
• enable processes that capture and assess potential changes to project scope
• Identify and customise governance frameworks that successfully integrate stakeholders behaviours and expectations

People in Project Management (Core, 20 Credits)

Group dynamics are the influential actions, processes and changes that occur within and between groups of people. Groups come in all shapes and sizes and their functions are many and varied. To understand groups and their dynamics, you must understand how people interact and function whilst working together in formalized organizational contexts. The module aims to unite and contextualize selected key theories associated with team dynamics from psychology and the social sciences with selected key theories associated with groups, teams and management processes from management and organization sciences. The overarching aim is to equip and empower you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to create, participate in and lead real and virtual project-orientated teams.

Project Feasibility and Economics (Core, 20 Credits)

In this module you will learn the various economic environments surrounding project organizations and project delivery, and examine the resources and constraints relating to financial decision-making for project formulation, initiation, delivery, and review. This module goes to assist in defining the levels of responsibility and directions of accountability required of a project manager. The module will cover the following key subjects, such as:

• The Sponsor economic environment: general economic theory; financial reportage, ratio analysis, determinants for solvency, business case appraisals, sources of finance and funding, project portfolios.
• The Professional economic environment; general economic theory; resourcing, scheduling, forecasting (risk and uncertainty), cash flow and professional services marketing.
• The Contracting economic environment: general economic theory; budgeting and cost management, labour and earned value analysis.
• Social Economic environments: public and private sector distinctions.

Academic Language Skills for Mechanical and Construction Engineering (Optional, 0 Credits)

Academic skills when studying away from your home institution can differ due to cultural and language differences in teaching and assessment practices. This module is designed to support your transition in the use and practice of technical language and subject specific skills around assessments and teaching provision in your chosen subject area in the Department of Architecture and Built Environment. The overall aim of this module is to develop your abilities to read and study effectively for academic purposes; to develop your skills in analysing and using source material in seminars and academic writing and to develop your use and application of language and communications skills to a higher level.

The topics you will cover on the module include:

• Understanding assignment briefs and exam questions.
• Developing academic writing skills, including citation, paraphrasing, and summarising.
• Practising ‘critical reading’ and ‘critical writing’.
• Planning and structuring academic assignments (e.g. essays, reports and presentations).
• Avoiding academic misconduct and gaining credit by using academic sources and referencing effectively.
• Listening skills for lectures.
• Speaking in seminar presentations.
• Giving discipline-related academic presentations, experiencing peer observation, and receiving formative feedback.
• Speed reading techniques.
• Discussing ethical issues in research, and analysing results.
• Describing bias and limitations of research.
• Developing self-reflection skills.

Research Project (Core, 60 Credits)

The module will build upon the concepts and theories presented to you during KB7030 Research Methods. It will require you to develop, consolidate, and apply your independent research, academic study, and research project management skills to the investigation of a topic of your own choice (or a topic that has been pre-approved and recommended by the Module Leader) that is relevant to your programme of study. You will undertake analytical and evaluative research that will result in the production of a Research Publication, either as a Journal Paper or a Dissertation. If you choose to present your findings as a Journal Paper, you will comply with the presentation and formatting requirements stipulated by the publishing house of the pre-selected, module-approved research journal. If you undertake a work-based study, you are not permitted to present your findings as a Journal Paper. Alternatively, if you choose to present your findings as a Dissertation, you will undertake a study that will lead to the presentation of either a traditional or work-based Dissertation and comply with the presentation and formatting requirements stipulated in the Module Handbook. Pre-selected, module-approved research journals to which you will ‘theoretically’ aim to submit your Journal Paper will be listed in the Module Handbook.

Engineering and Environment Advanced Practice (Core, 60 Credits)

This 60 credit module is designed for all full-time postgraduate programmes within the Faculty of Engineering and Environment and provides you with the option to either study abroad, undertake a work placement or join a research group for one semester as part of your programme. This experience gives you the opportunity to apply skills and knowledge acquired during the taught part of your programme and to acquire new skills and knowledge in an alternative learning environment. Specific learning will be defined in a personal learning contract.

Your Advanced Practice semester will be assessed on a pass/fail basis and as such, it does not contribute to the classification of your degree. However when taken and passed it is recognised both in your transcript as a 60 credit Advanced Practice Module and in your degree title.
