Please note: This programme is designed for UK registered Nurses, Doctors and Dentists based in the UK, in order to apply you must provide evidence of UK registration.  You must also hold the correct entry clearance to allow you to study part time in the United Kingdom.

This innovative new part time programme is available to existing and aspiring cosmetic practitioners who already hold professional registration as nurses, doctors or dentists. Developed in partnership with expert practitioners and the leading professional associations in aesthetics, the competency based programme has been designed to fully meet the recommendations for practice identified by Health Education England (2014) Education for non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

A flexible blended learning approach is used to deliver the programme allowing you to fit it around your work and make it accessible to those geographically distant to the University. The programme is a mixture of e-learning, face to face and practice based learning. The practice based learning will assessed by expert aesthetic practitioners holding a recognised mentoring qualification.

This one-year postgraduate certificate programme is linked to the full Masters programme, which is taken over three years. The postgraduate certificate is the first stage (Year 1) and focuses on the assessment of your proficiency to provide safe person-centred care to meet the HEE recommendations, enabling you to practice autonomously as an aesthetic practitioner offering botulinum toxin and non-permanent dermal fillers. This will be achieved through the opportunity to develop the relevant evidence based knowledge to underpin your practice and to develop practice competence working alongside experienced, professionally registered aesthetic practitioners who will observe and assess your competence in practice

Course in Brief

The full Masters award programme is taken over three years (stages). They must be accessed incrementally and you must successfully complete each stage in turn. Should you be unable to progress, lower awards are awarded for successfully completed stages, but interim awards are not given.

In the first year, the programme will: prepare registered practitioners to develop the clinical knowledge and competencies required to provide facial cosmetic treatments with botulinum toxin and non- permanent dermal fillers underpinned by sound professional decision making at post graduate level.

In the second year, the programme will: build upon the clinical competence and knowledge acquired and enable registered practitioners to understand and critique the evidence base for cosmetic/aesthetic practice, set up and run independent cosmetic/aesthetic practices, which provide safe, person centred care, and enable them to facilitate practice based learning and assessment of other practitioners.

The final year will: enable registered practitioners to add to the evidence base for non-surgical cosmetic/aesthetic procedures through empirical research or systematic review of the literature.

Designed to fit around your existing commitments, the programme is delivered flexibly through a mixture of e-learning, face-to-face and practice-based learning.

The programme is based on authentic learning and assessment principles (Lombardi, 2007) which prioritise “real life” learning. An assessment for learning approach will be used which employs formative assessment tasks to help you learn and develop the knowledge and skills required to complete the summative assessment task. Formative learning tasks will check your understanding of both the module content and the requirements and expectations of the summative assessment task assessment, providing feedback along the learning journey to enable you to assess your own level of understanding, safe application of the learning to practice and to highlight areas for development.

In the PG Cert, once a baseline level of understanding has been developed and assessed in the core module, you will undertake supervised practice based learning alongside an experienced professionally registered aesthetic practitioner to develop confidence and competence in practice, and be assessed against a competency framework. Formative feedback on your practical ability and underpinning knowledge will be provided by mentors in practice, and a guidance teacher who will oversee your academic learning.

Summative assessment will be linked to each module of study within the programme; in the second module of the PG Cert this will include theoretical and competency assessment in practice.
