What will I learn on this module?

You will draw on your learning from previous modules and placements to consolidate your knowledge and skills in preparation for practice and meeting the requirements for registration with HCPC. You will continue to develop your reflective skills and identify your own areas for development to focus your learning and support your transition to Professional Occupational Therapist; learning to assess and evaluate your own skills.

All of the above learning will be consolidated during a period of practice placement; where you will be demonstrating the practical and professional skills required of a student making the transition to entry-level practitioner. Placement hours completed on this module contribute to the 1000 hours of supervised practice required to be eligible to register to practice on completion of the programme.

For this placement you may have the opportunity to work in a non-traditional or “role-emerging” area, where there is currently no direct OT service. For example, previous placements have been within mainstream schools, charities and new NHS services.
You will learn to apply your key skills of activity analysis and assessment to identify occupational need/opportunities and design, develop and implement occupation-based interventions/projects. Placements at this level will require you to think creatively and autonomously, and apply entrepreneurship and leadership skills to promote the occupational therapy role.

The preparatory period in university prior to placement will revisit the professional conduct required as set out by the College of Occupational Therapists Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (2015) and HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics (2016).

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a range of student-centred approaches, designed to help you make the transition to practice with its requirement for life-long learning and continual professional development. An introductory lecture will be utilised to introduce you to key module concepts and a framework to guide a process of self-assessment, self-development planning and to identify strategies to meet your learning needs. You will be given time to work in small groups and independently to facilitate autonomous learning. Individual or group tutorial sessions will be utilised to provide guidance and support, with the option to revisit topic specific lectures/workshops relevant to identified development needs.

Practice Placement will also be an integral part of learning on this module where you will apply and evaluate your knowledge and skills in an identified practice area, working autonomously with weekly supervision from a qualified Occupational Therapist who will act as your practice educator to facilitate your development as an independent, safe and effective practitioner. Tutorial sessions will also form part of your module learning, specifically to support you with the placement process. Tutorial sessions may be in the form of individual or small group tutorials, in university or in practice.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The identified module tutor, alongside the programme team, will structure face-to-face and on-line learning opportunities to support your learning within the module and to assist you to work towards the module assessment. The module handbook, the electronic reading list, and information communicated throughout the module within sessions and on the e-learning portal will all signpost you to resources to support your professional development.
A formative assessment opportunity with your personal tutor will assist you to evaluate your own progress within the module and identify areas for further development. Assessment preparation with the module teaching team will also be an integral part of the module.
You will also have an identified practice educator (a qualified Occupational Therapist) who will facilitate and support your learning in practice, although, if this is a role emerging placement, may not be based in the service/organisation. In addition, you will be supported to identify and access other professionals and disciplines available in the particular practice area. At key points before, during and after placement, academic staff will assist you to link placement learning to your module learning and to your wider professional development.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment –
Submission of a written self-assessment/development plan to be used as basis for Professional Development Appraisal with personal tutor and to inform area of focus for case study (of an individual or community) (MLOs 1, 2, 3, 6, 7)

Ongoing formative assessment on practice placement where strengths and areas for development are identified. This will be supported through regular supervision meetings between the student and the practice educator and will be summarised during a mid-point contact with the student’s personal tutor. (All MLOs)


Summative assessment-
Part A: Practice Placement

Students will be assessed on a pass/fail basis in line with specified competencies. You will receive written feedback from your practice educator regarding strengths and areas for development. Placement must be passed in order to pass the module. (All MLOs)


Students will present a digital professional development portfolio reflecting the knowledge skills and attributes you have developed during the occupational therapy programme linked to the Royal College of Occupational Therapists Career Development Framework ( MLO 1,2,3,5,

Part C; 15 min Oral presentation justifying the professional reasoning linked to a practice-based example

With reference to the digital portfolio, students will be required to articulate and justify their professional reasoning, including a critical reflection on their own performance and development needs. (MLO 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6)




Individual written feedback will be provided following the summative assessment highlighting strengths and areas for development.

Module abstract

In this module you will consolidate your understanding of Occupational Therapy in preparation for your transition to a qualified and state registered professional. You will be supported to increase your confidence in further developing your own knowledge and skills of occupational therapy, with particular focus on an area of practice identified in your assessment of your own development and learning needs. You will reflect on and critically evaluate your own knowledge and skills, identifying an area for development and planning/managing your own learning with support and guidance. This will form the basis of your formative assessment and feedback from this will assist you to develop skills in articulating your professional reasoning and development needs within the summative module assessment. This module will equip you with skills and experience of self-assessment and Professional Development Appraisal for continual professional development as required by Professional Bodies (HCPC and COT)

University learning will be consolidated through a period of practice placement, embedded within this module.
