Option for Study Abroad
The two year course is specifically designed for people who have already completed previous degree level study, and who can apply their critical thinking skills to the theory and practice of occupational therapy. The course includes four placements to develop skills and confidence in providing occupational therapy in a range of settings and contexts.
The advantages of this course include the breadth of our healthcare expertise and the variety of our placement opportunities.
This course adheres to the professional standards of practice, values and behaviours set out by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and Royal College of Occupational Therapists - RCOT, which will allow you to be eligible for professional registration on successful completion of your degree.
Our pre-registration occupational therapy provision has been accredited by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.

Learning in practice is an integral part of the course. There are two practice placements in the first year and a further two in the second year. You will also undertake practical learning in our on-campus Clinical Skills Centre.
Our assessments are designed to promote academic development and professional practice. Methods include written assignments, presentations and assessments of practice during placements.

Dedicated clinicians will support your learning during each of your four placements. While on campus, you’ll also learn from visiting occupational therapists and service users who will share their experiences and insights into developing better services.
To fully support your learning journey you will have a dedicated personal tutor who will be on-hand to offer help or assistance throughout the duration of your studies.

The course curriculum is designed not just to meet academic requirements but also HCPC Standards of Proficiency for occupational therapists. HCPC registration will be essential for you to practise as an occupational therapist in the UK.

On completion of this course you’ll be ready to seek professional registration with HCPC so that you can work as an occupational therapist with the NHS, social services, charities or private sector employers.
If you choose to continue your studies to a higher level, your experience of postgraduate research will provide an excellent foundation.
Whatever you decide to do, you’ll have the transferable skills that employers expect from a master’s graduate from Northumbria University. These include the ability to tackle complex issues through conceptualisation and undertaking research, the ability to contribute to new processes and knowledge, and the ability to formulate balanced judgements when considering incomplete or ambiguous data.

First degree with honours in a subject relevant to occupational therapy, normally at a minimum classification of 2:1 (or equivalent), and normally completed with the last five years.
Applicants are also required to hold GCSE (or equivalent) English Language, Maths and Science at GCSE grade C or above.
APL/AP(E)L/ AWBL may be appropriate and will be assessed against University criteria in the Lifelong Learning Accreditation Framework.
Accreditation of prior learning is encouraged, although there is no accreditation of practice, as the 1,000 hours of successful practice placement must be accomplished during the degree, in order to gain eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.
