The BSc Nursing Course (Child) has been specially designed to provide you with an in-depth understanding of the needs of children, young people and their families.

You will learn the skills required to provide excellent care for children and families, in addition to focusing on key health issues for young people’s such as safeguarding, mental health and the transition to adult care.

Delivered in our specialised clinical skills centre, you will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and training equipment that is at the forefront of the healthcare industry. You will also undertake a number of placements to further support your learning.

The BSc Nursing (Child) course has been designed to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and Standards for Pre-registration Nursing Education (2010), enabling you to apply for professional registration as a children’s nurse on successful completion of your degree.

This course boasts a very high employment rate, with 100% of students progressing to work in a professional or managerial job within six months of graduating (Unistats 2016)

Personal Statement Guidelines

Why is a personal statement important?

The Personal Statement in the application is about you (as the name suggests) and it is an opportunity to tell us why you want to study here and why you want to study the chosen field of nursing. The Nursing Midwifery Council require universities to conduct a face-to-face interview (including Skype) with all nursing candidates and the personal statement is key to you being asked to attend an interview. The personal statement is your chance to sell yourself to the person assessing your application.

What should you highlight in the Personal Statement?

Universities want to know what interests you about your chosen field of nursing and that you understand what it takes to be a nurse. You will need to include transferrable skills gained at school, work or in your personal life. You will really need to think about the skills and qualities that are required to be a nurse. Universities want to know what bearing your current studies have on your selection to the chosen field of nursing, and what experiences you have gained from your studies. Look at the NHS Constitution and the six NHS Values and include some of the values within the statement. We also want to know what bearing your current studies have on your selection to the chosen field of nursing, and what experiences you have gained from your studies. We also want to learn about you, your extra-curricular activities, what you do in your spare time, any relevant work/volunteer experience, and any other achievements.

Through all this, you also have to pinpoint the skills and attributes you have gained from inside and outside of school/college. This is very important. For instance, if you have good powers of analysis and problem-solving ability then record this in the statement. If you are not sure where to start, write down a list of what you have done, and pick out the most relevant parts and link them to the field of nursing chosen.

What should I avoid doing?

Do not waffle. It is tempting to list everything you have done and let the selector 'pick out' the relevant bits - that does not happen. Think of it as a job application - keep it concise, keep it clear, and keep it logically organised. For everything you write, make sure it is relevant. For instance, do not say you just 'find something interesting' - that does not tell us much. We want to know why you find it interesting, and why that makes you a good candidate. Always remember that phrases such as 'for as long as I can remember' may sound good but they can sound cliched and at times simply are not true. Keep it honest - keep it meaningful.

What sort of experiences might be relevant?

You can talk about what you have learnt from team sports, part-time work or volunteer work. If you have health care experience then include this in the personal statement. You may might want to give examples of situations where you have demonstrated commitment, leadership and hard work. When have you adapted to new situations or managed a variety of commitments? Can you relate this to how you will cope with the demands of nursing? Have you had to deal with a difficult situation at work or at school or college? Whatever your experiences, tailor them to the chosen field of nursing.

There is a wealth of information available online and from careers advisers. Access nursing journals and health care websites too so that information in the personal statement is relevant to the chosen field of nursing.

With a key focus on the needs of young people and how best to support them and their families, you will learn the fundamental skills required to become a practicing children’s nurse.

Successful completion of this course will enable you to apply for registration as a practicing nurse, allowing you to pursue your career within this rewarding profession.

Teaching is delivered through a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops, which are supported with on-site placements to further enhance your learning.

You also will have the opportunity to practise your new skills within a simulated environment, before applying them to the workplace during your placements.

This course utilises a range of assessment methods including written assignments, presentations, reflective personal portfolios and the direct observation of skills and competencies. You will also create a Personal and Professional Development File (PPDF) that will facilitate your development and document your skills.

In your final year you will complete a dissertation where all of the skills and knowledge you have acquired can be put into practice.

All of our academic team are qualified nurses or health visitors with an established background in nursing practice, management and research. This ensures that they fully understand how best to support you and prepare you for the demands of the ever-changing workplace.

You will have access to ongoing support through a dedicated personal tutor and our practice learning team (PLT). You will also have an allocated mentor who will be there to provide on-site support whilst you undertake your placements.

GCSE Requirements:

A good GCSE profile is expected including Maths and English Language at minimum grade C or University recognised equivalent.  If you have studied for a new GCSE for which you will be awarded a numerical grade then you will need to achieve a minimum grade 4.

Introduction to Childrens Nursing (NC, 20 Credits)

This module will prepare and support your transition to both university and the placement environment. Your children’s nursing learning takes place in both the university and practice settings, and while on placement, you will experience working alongside a range of health professionals.This module will introduce you to both the well and sick child and prepare you to work with children, young people and families in both community and hospital settings.

You will be introduced to academic study skills and supported in developing your academic writing style in this module. Research evidence will be used to support your knowledge development and help apply it to your nursing practice, establishing life long learning attributes.

The concepts of childhood, children’s nursing and the importance of family centred care will be explored in the module. You will learn about the theoretical knowledge of the physical and psychosocial aspects of healthy child development and factors influencing families and parenting. You will examine the concept of family and the role of the family on healthy growth and development. The module precedes your first practice placement and runs alongside the ‘Exploring Professional Identity’ and ‘Children’s Nursing Practice’ modules. Having studied key skills required for the assessment of children and young people’s health in the university setting, you will then have the opportunity to apply this knowledge in the practice setting, and you will gain knowledge of physiological norms.

Essentials of Children and Young People's Health and Illness (NC, 20 Credits)

In this module you will increase your knowledge around the care of the child in the community, and of the acutely ill child in hospital. The care of those who are experiencing psychological health issues will also be explored, and consideration given to the context of care delivery for those children and young people. Having been introduced to various nursing assessment frameworks in the introductory module, you will learn to assess and plan care for children and young people with a range of physical and mental health issues. You will be given the opportunity to develop your understanding of the physiology relevant to the care of these children and explore monitoring and multidisciplinary management with a focus on early recognition of problems. With academic support from the lecturers in the children’s nursing teaching team, your skills for safe and effective delivery of care will be developed through the exploration and examination of key themes and issues around becoming a safe and effective children’s nurse.

Nursing Practice (1) (NC, 40 Credits)

This practice module will provide you with a unique opportunity to develop skills and knowledge directly relevant to your current practice placement experiences. The practice modules in each year of your programme will both support your learning while you are in practice and provide an environment, within university, to consolidate the skills and knowledge necessary to progress effectively.
During the first year, you will learn the fundamental skills that are necessary for safe, effective and professional practice. Prior to your first placement there are a number of mandatory sessions which will enable you to practice with confidence to protect your patients. These sessions will include, moving and handling (M&H), basic life support (BLS), equality and diversity and infection prevention.
During the majority of your first year clinical placements you will return to university for one day a week to reflect on your experiences, learn together with your peers and examine theoretical concepts that will enhance your practice. Sessions will focus on a range of subjects including patient assessment, recording of vital signs and effectively monitoring a patient’s condition. You will learn about models of care, professional standards and basic medicine calculation and management. There will also be opportunities to participate in simulated education utilising a range of specialist technology and taught by experts.
These dynamic learning opportunities will help illustrate how you can gather evidence of your increasing abilities and confidence. You will learn how to develop a professional portfolio, how to critically reflect and how to self-assess. You will learn about the importance of patient centred care and will be asked to reflect effectively on service user feedback. These skills are the start of your development as an evidence-based practitioner.

Promoting Compassionate Nursing care (NC, 20 Credits)

This module will enable you to explore the concepts of care, compassion, communication, competence, commitment and courage (6Cs) from a variety of perspectives, reflecting the different areas of nursing practice. You will study the theory and research evidence that underpins the module themes and will consider its application within experiential learning activities in module sessions. The underpinning values of the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code will be used as a framework to help you develop those skills which enable nurses to prioritise people and practise effectively building caring, professional relationships. The module will explore the art of nursing and the philosophies of holism and humanism that are fundamental to nursing practice. You will be enabled to develop transferable skills that demonstrate respect, dignity, empathy and unconditional positive regard within empowering relationships. You will build on your existing experience and abilities to explore a range of communication skills nurses need in order to demonstrate effective listening and responding to patients. Challenging situations for nurses can arise in clinical practice and you will use scenario-based activities to learn and practise the communication skills used by professional nurses to deliver safe and effective care. Active engagement with module materials and learning opportunities will help you develop the independent learning skills required within the module. Key themes of reflection and self-awareness will be integrated throughout the module which will foster the enquiring, analytical approach to your practice and development that is required as both a student nurse and a future professional registrant.

Exploring Professional Identity (NC, 20 Credits)

This module enables you to explore the fundamental concepts and principles in relation to professional identity and image within your specific field of nursing and across other fields.
The key theoretical concepts/perspectives and issues of quality nursing are explored in the political context of wider contemporary healthcare.
You gain the knowledge and skills required to act in a non-discriminatory, compassionate, kind and sensitive manner within professional boundaries. You will consider and develop fundamental nursing skills to act in an honest way with integrity applying the principles of The Nursing and Midwifery Code (2015). You will demonstrate your ability to practice in a holistic, individualised, patient centred, non-judgemental, caring and sensitive manner, acknowledging the diverse needs of contemporary society. You will be introduced to the concept of collaborative working and its importance in nursing practice.
You will explore your Personal Professional Development File(PPDF),which you develop throughout the programme, where you keep a record of what you have learned and gather evidence for your learning and practice. It provides space to reflect on your learning and development as a nurse.

Academic Language Skills for Nursing, Midwifery and Health; Social Work, Education and Community Wellbeing (Optional, 0 Credits)

Academic skills when studying away from your home country can differ due to cultural and language differences in teaching and assessment practices. This module is designed to support your transition in the use and practice of technical language and subject specific skills around assessments and teaching provision in your chosen subject. The overall aim of this module is to develop your abilities to read and study effectively for academic purposes; to develop your skills in analysing and using source material in seminars and academic writing and to develop your use and application of language and communications skills to a higher level.

The topics you will cover on the module include:

• Understanding assignment briefs and exam questions.
• Developing academic writing skills, including citation, paraphrasing, and summarising.
• Practising ‘critical reading’ and ‘critical writing’
• Planning and structuring academic assignments (e.g. essays, reports and presentations).

Advanced Care of Children and Young People (NC, 20 Credits)

You will develop skills in comprehensive, systematic nursing assessments of children and young people, that take account of relevant physical, social, cultural, psychological, spiritual, genetic and environmental factors.
In order to practice effectively and preserve safety you will develop your knowledge and understanding of the biological basis of children and young people’s health and illness and its application to nursing practice. This will enable you to develop leadership and clinical decision-making skills.

You will recognise and act to overcome barriers in developing effective relationships with service users and carers. You will explore the challenges and benefits of working with those children, young people and families who are seen as experts in their area of care. You will recognise the skills required to act in a safe and effective manner when dealing with children and young people with complex care needs.

Young People’s Health and Illness (NC, 20 Credits)

This module is uniquely designed to give you the opportunity to explore health and illness in young people. You will define this stage of development, biologically, emotionally and socially in order for you to understand their needs, and that of their families and friends. This period of development is often referred to as adolescence; it is a time of rapid growth and development. It is a stage of development that has been referred to as high risk, with a higher incidence of mortality and morbidity and you will learn more about these risks within this module. Many conditions are more prevalent in this age group and you will critically explore some of these, for example, chronic gastro-intestinal conditions, anxiety and depression. Young people are also developing independence, taking responsibility for their own health and illness and you will explore best practice in relation to this transition

Evidence based practice underpins nursing, within young people’s care there is a growing knowledge base for practice. You will learn how to analyse the research within this evidence base to ensure that practice is of the highest quality. Health and Social Care Services have often been criticised for not meeting the specific needs of young people, this is your opportunity to learn how to ensure that services meet those needs. You will analyse practice, consider solutions and learn how to advocate effectively for young people and their families. Young people’s health and illness is personally, culturally, socially, and legally defined. This presents many dilemmas for children’s nursing practice, you will learn how to deconstruct this to inform your clinical decision-making in the best interests of the young person. Trust and communication are fundamental nursing skills and are the basis of an effective therapeutic relationship with young people. You will be given every opportunity to excel in these skills including the use of simulation based education (SBE).

Nursing Practice (2) (NC, 40 Credits)

This module will support your practice learning and help you further develop the knowledge and skills you gained from your clinical placements in year one. It will help you develop greater confidence and autonomy, allowing you to contribute effectively to a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare providers. The practice modules in each year of your programme will both support your learning while you are in practice and provide an environment, within university, to consolidate the skills and knowledge necessary to progress effectively.
While in university you will be updating and exploring in greater depth some of the fundamental skills you acquired in year one, these will include, moving and handling (M&H), basic life support (BLS), first aid and information governance. This module will also offer you the opportunity to enhance your understanding of medicine management and pharmacology supported by additional e-learning materials.
The module will focus on issues of patient safety including, assessment, decision-making and communication within teams. You will also learn about strategic health priorities, risk, human factors and incident management. Some of your learning will be with students from other fields of nursing and other professional programmes providing the opportunity to learn more about other roles in the multidisciplinary team.
You will continue to develop your professional portfolio and will be asked to reflect effectively on contemporary patient safety priorities. These dynamic learning opportunities will help illustrate how you can gather evidence of your increasing abilities and confidence as you work towards becoming an independent practitioner.

Public Health in Contemporary Nursing (NC, 20 Credits)

Promoting the health and well-being of children, young people and adults through facilitation of health enhancing activities, is a pre-requisite of the nursing role and this module aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills to do this successfully.You will learn about contemporary public health, implications for the population and relevance to all fields of practice. As you develop your understanding you will learn how to analyse the impact of national and local public health policy on individuals including people with a learning disability or experiencing a physical or mental health problem. You will explore a range of public health strategies, health promotion approaches and models used in clinical practice and cover a wide range of topics, such as, smoking, obesity, dementia, sexual health and alcohol. This module takes a technology enabled learning (TEL) approach using a ‘flipped classroom’ which means you will have access to online e-learning packages before the seminars and practicals. Understanding of public health theory is developed through formative learning exercises within the e-lectures and this knowledge is then shared and applied to fields of practice within seminars and practicals with your lecturers and peers. You will apply your learning within a summative assignment requiring you to analyse your current practice and make recommendations for improvement where appropriate. You will also appraise the role of the nurse in health improvement within your field of practice and consider service user involvement within public health decision making using an interprofessional approach to Making Every Contact Count.

In this module you will focus on the advancement of clinical skills, problem solving and critical decision making in relation to children and young people with critical care and high dependency needs. You will have the opportunity to explore the evidence that underpins practice of this area of care, within a variety of contexts and settings.You will explore through an understanding of the critical care pathways, the key conditions relating to cardiac, neurology, respiratory, sepsis and trauma. Throughout the module you will continue to develop and build your knowledge around anatomy and physiology to recognise the deteriorating child and young person, and be able to initiate a treatment plan.

Children and Young People’s Health Care Challenges (NC, 20 Credits)

Children and Young People’s (CYP) Health Care Challenges is a module delivered towards the end of your three year programme. It is deliberately placed to allow you to reflect and critically explore some of the complex challenges encountered within practice and prepare you for the future. You will learn to think the unthinkable, be courageous and competent in your decision making and build upon your evidence base. You will learn how to challenge decisions that are not in the best interests of the child, ensuring the highest quality of care is given. You will learn to evaluate CYP nursing in order to ensure that services are delivered efficiently to the highest standard and, where this is not the case, how to question this whilst providing evidence based solutions. Through extensive research, service-user narrative and reflection, you will further develop understanding of the challenges facing CYP and their families who are living with co-morbidity, a progressive illness and with the long-term effects of disease/treatment and disability. You will explore some of the most difficult aspects of CYP nursing but within a safe and supportive environment. Some of the topics you will critically explore will include; safeguarding, advocacy, mental and sexual health. In addition, you will consider nursing within a global context through exploration of health inequalities and multiculturism. Finally, the module aims to ensure that you acquire the communication strategies which support collaborative working and service-user involvement to ensure you practice effectively and preserve safety in every contact within children’s nursing.

This module will provide you with a unique opportunity to develop skills and knowledge directly relevant to your third year practice placement experiences and prepare you for working life as a qualified nurse. It will specifically focus on leading and improving nursing practice, management and leadership.
While in university you will be updating and exploring in greater depth some of the skills you acquired in previous years, including moving and handling (M&H), basic life support (BLS), first aid and information governance. You will continue to have the opportunity to practice in a simulated environment and learn more about medicine management.
You will be asked to critically reflect and debate contemporary theories and explore service improvement models, which support sustainable service improvement. You will critically explore the role of collaboration and partnership working, with service users and members of the multidisciplinary team. You will be provided with opportunities to critically reflect on your own personal and professional responsibility for your continued development as a manager of safe and effective care delivery and as a future leader of service improvement in nursing practice. You will also learn about team leadership in an interprofessional working context and the challenges of leading teams in a realistic care environment to ensure patient and staff safety. The purpose of this module is for you to consolidate and further develop your knowledge and skills from your BSc (Hons) Nursing studies to undertake and produce an evidenced based practice report specific to your field of nursing. Building upon the research and evidence based practice skills in previous modules you will be able to source, critically appraise and synthesise findings from current research to make informed recommendations to inform and develop clinical practice.
