The BSc Adult Nursing course has been specifically developed to equip you with the knowledge and experience required to care for adults with a diverse range of care needs. Working in conjunction with patients’ carers and supporters, you will possess the skills required to lead and deliver specialist care both inside and outside of the hospital environment.

The BSc Adult Nursing course has been designed to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and Standards for Pre-registration Nursing Education (2010), enabling you to apply for professional registration as a nurse on successful completion of your degree.

Personal Statement Guidelines

Why is a personal statement important?

The Personal Statement in the application is about you (as the name suggests) and it is an opportunity to tell us why you want to study here and why you want to study the chosen field of nursing. The Nursing Midwifery Council require universities to conduct a face-to-face interview (including Skype) with all nursing candidates and the personal statement is key to you being asked to attend an interview. The personal statement is your chance to sell yourself to the person assessing your application.

What should you highlight in the Personal Statement?

Universities want to know what interests you about your chosen field of nursing and that you understand what it takes to be a nurse. You will need to include transferrable skills gained at school, work or in your personal life. You will really need to think about the skills and qualities that are required to be a nurse. Universities want to know what bearing your current studies have on your selection to the chosen field of nursing, and what experiences you have gained from your studies. Look at the NHS Constitution and the six NHS Values and include some of the values within the statement. We also want to know what bearing your current studies have on your selection to the chosen field of nursing, and what experiences you have gained from your studies. We also want to learn about you, your extra-curricular activities, what you do in your spare time, any relevant work/volunteer experience, and any other achievements.

Through all this, you also have to pinpoint the skills and attributes you have gained from inside and outside of school/college. This is very important. For instance, if you have good powers of analysis and problem-solving ability then record this in the statement. If you are not sure where to start, write down a list of what you have done, and pick out the most relevant parts and link them to the field of nursing chosen.

What should I avoid doing?

Do not waffle. It is tempting to list everything you have done and let the selector 'pick out' the relevant bits - that does not happen. Think of it as a job application - keep it concise, keep it clear, and keep it logically organised. For everything you write, make sure it is relevant. For instance, do not say you just 'find something interesting' - that does not tell us much. We want to know why you find it interesting, and why that makes you a good candidate. Always remember that phrases such as 'for as long as I can remember' may sound good but they can sound cliched and at times simply are not true. Keep it honest - keep it meaningful.

What sort of experiences might be relevant?

You can talk about what you have learnt from team sports, part-time work or volunteer work. If you have health care experience then include this in the personal statement. You may might want to give examples of situations where you have demonstrated commitment, leadership and hard work. When have you adapted to new situations or managed a variety of commitments? Can you relate this to how you will cope with the demands of nursing? Have you had to deal with a difficult situation at work or at school or college? Whatever your experiences, tailor them to the chosen field of nursing.

There is a wealth of information available online and from careers advisers. Access nursing journals and health care websites too so that information in the personal statement is relevant to the chosen field of nursing.

With a key focus on acute illness, older people and the care and management of patients with long-term conditions, successful completion of this course will provide you with the qualification required to become a registered and practicing nurse.

You will learn about the delivery of public health interventions and the care of people at all stages of their life, including end-of-life care.  

Teaching is delivered through a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops, which are supported with on-site placements to further enhance your learning.

You will have the opportunity to practise your new skills within a simulated environment, before applying them to real life scenarios during your placements.

This course utilises a range of assessment methods including written assignments, presentations, reflective personal portfolios and the direct observation of skills and competencies. You will also create a Personal and Professional Development File (PPDF) that will facilitate your development and document your skills.

In your final year you will complete a dissertation where all of the skills and knowledge you have acquired can be put into practice.

GCSE Requirements:

A good GCSE profile is expected including Maths and English Language at minimum grade C or University recognised equivalent.  If you have studied for a new GCSE for which you will be awarded a numerical grade then you will need to achieve a minimum grade 4.

Foundations of Knowlege for Adult Nursing (NC, 20 Credits)

This module will enable you to explore the various forms of knowledge that adult nurses use to underpin their practice, this includes research. The module will use Carper’s ‘ways of knowing’ as a framework focusing on the domains of science, ethics, personal and aesthetics. These will help to establish the range of perspectives, which will contribute to your clinical nursing evidence base as an adult nurse. The module will help to develop techniques for the retrieval of evidence from a range sources, including research. In addition, it will provide you with the opportunity to develop the essential cognitive skills that contribute to effective nursing practice and set you on your journey as a lifelong learner (Chapelhow et al 2005).

Exploring Health and Illness in Adults (NC, 20 Credits)

This module will enable you to explore the complex nature of health and illness in adults. You will be introduced to key concepts and theories that will help you to understand and explain the wider determinants and influences on health and illness and how these affects on health outcomes for adults across the life span.
You will examine the contemporary political and professional frameworks that guide the delivery of nursing care to support adults in managing their health and well-being, consistent with Nursing Midwifery Standards (2010). You will further develop your nursing knowledge and skills in order to identify key risks to health, focussing on individual circumstances, behaviours and lifestyle choices. You will critically examine and apply information about health outcomes to develop strategies to support adults to improve and protect their health and well-being and to manage the limitations caused by capacity, capability, ill health and disability.

Nursing Practice (1) (NC, 40 Credits)

This practice module will provide you with a unique opportunity to develop skills and knowledge directly relevant to your current practice placement experiences. The practice modules in each year of your programme will both support your learning while you are in practice and provide an environment, within university, to consolidate the skills and knowledge necessary to progress effectively.
During the first year, you will learn the fundamental skills that are necessary for safe, effective and professional practice. Prior to your first placement there are a number of mandatory sessions which will enable you to practice with confidence to protect your patients. These sessions will include, moving and handling (M&H), basic life support (BLS), equality and diversity and infection prevention.
During the majority of your first year clinical placements you will return to university for one day a week to reflect on your experiences, learn together with your peers and examine theoretical concepts that will enhance your practice. Sessions will focus on a range of subjects including patient assessment, recording of vital signs and effectively monitoring a patient’s condition. You will learn about models of care, professional standards and basic medicine calculation and management. There will also be opportunities to participate in simulated education utilising a range of specialist technology and taught by experts.
These dynamic learning opportunities will help illustrate how you can gather evidence of your increasing abilities and confidence. You will learn how to develop a professional portfolio, how to critically reflect and how to self-assess. You will learn about the importance of patient centred care and will be asked to reflect effectively on service user feedback. These skills are the start of your development as an evidence-based practitioner.

Promoting Compassionate Nursing care (NC, 20 Credits)

This module will enable you to explore the concepts of care, compassion, communication, competence, commitment and courage (6Cs) from a variety of perspectives, reflecting the different areas of nursing practice. You will study the theory and research evidence that underpins the module themes and will consider its application within experiential learning activities in module sessions. The underpinning values of the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code will be used as a framework to help you develop those skills which enable nurses to prioritise people and practise effectively building caring, professional relationships. The module will explore the art of nursing and the philosophies of holism and humanism that are fundamental to nursing practice. You will be enabled to develop transferable skills that demonstrate respect, dignity, empathy and unconditional positive regard within empowering relationships. You will build on your existing experience and abilities to explore a range of communication skills nurses need in order to demonstrate effective listening and responding to patients. Challenging situations for nurses can arise in clinical practice and you will use scenario-based activities to learn and practise the communication skills used by professional nurses to deliver safe and effective care. Active engagement with module materials and learning opportunities will help you develop the independent learning skills required within the module. Key themes of reflection and self-awareness will be integrated throughout the module which will foster the enquiring, analytical approach to your practice and development that is required as both a student nurse and a future professional registrant.

Exploring Professional Identity (NC, 20 Credits)

This module enables you to explore the fundamental concepts and principles in relation to professional identity and image within your specific field of nursing and across other fields.
The key theoretical concepts/perspectives and issues of quality nursing are explored in the political context of wider contemporary healthcare.
You gain the knowledge and skills required to act in a non-discriminatory, compassionate, kind and sensitive manner within professional boundaries. You will consider and develop fundamental nursing skills to act in an honest way with integrity applying the principles of The Nursing and Midwifery Code (2015). You will demonstrate your ability to practice in a holistic, individualised, patient centred, non-judgemental, caring and sensitive manner, acknowledging the diverse needs of contemporary society. You will be introduced to the concept of collaborative working and its importance in nursing practice.
You will explore your Personal Professional Development File(PPDF),which you develop throughout the programme, where you keep a record of what you have learned and gather evidence for your learning and practice. It provides space to reflect on your learning and development as a nurse.

Academic Language Skills for Nursing, Midwifery and Health; Social Work, Education and Community Wellbeing (Optional, 0 Credits)

Academic skills when studying away from your home country can differ due to cultural and language differences in teaching and assessment practices. This module is designed to support your transition in the use and practice of technical language and subject specific skills around assessments and teaching provision in your chosen subject. The overall aim of this module is to develop your abilities to read and study effectively for academic purposes; to develop your skills in analysing and using source material in seminars and academic writing and to develop your use and application of language and communications skills to a higher level.

Essential Skills and Knowledge in Adult Nursing (NC, 20 Credits)

This module will focus on developing skills and knowledge that you will require for safe and effective nursing care:
? Working in partnership with individuals, families and professionals
? Informed consent
? Respecting individual choice, including relating to treatment options, e.g. blood transfusion, and not expressing inappropriate personal views
? Adapting care to meet individual needs/preferences
? Pre-assessment
? Principles of preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care, including preventing, recognising and responding to deterioration
? Application of these principles to individuals undergoing specific operations, e.g. orthopaedic, gastrointestinal, breast, gynaecological and prostate surgery

Understanding and Responding to Acute and Critical Changes to Adult Health (NC, 20 Credits)

This module will enable you to apply acquired knowledge and skills to enable provision of holistic patient centred care to the acutely ill adult and their families/carers. During this module you will be introduced to a range of topics related to caring for the deteriorating patient. Your learning will be underpinned by contemporary research and evidence based practice to enable you to understand the complexities of this topic and practice effectively.

The module will focus on issues such as:
• Recognising the deteriorating patient to include application of the assessments applied to recognise patient deterioration
• Application of pathophysiology of conditions that may present in the acute stage
• Understand the potential impact on the human body integrating knowledge of the pathophysiological process to aetiology and clinical manifestations to inform management of care
• Explore patient-centred, relationship-centred and holistic approaches to caring for critically ill patients and their family.

You will learn the importance of collaboratively and effectively working with your peers in both health and social care alongside 3rd sector organisations using a simulation based education approach to care for the acutely ill adult patient. This module will build upon your appreciation of research as evidence to inform your clinical practice. You will engage in critical reviews of the research supporting the subject areas in this module. This will help to inform discussion and debate with peers.

Nursing Practice (2) (NC, 40 Credits)

This module will support your practice learning and help you further develop the knowledge and skills you gained from your clinical placements in year one. It will help you develop greater confidence and autonomy, allowing you to contribute effectively to a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare providers. The practice modules in each year of your programme will both support your learning while you are in practice and provide an environment, within university, to consolidate the skills and knowledge necessary to progress effectively.
While in university you will be updating and exploring in greater depth some of the fundamental skills you acquired in year one, these will include, moving and handling (M&H), basic life support (BLS), first aid and information governance. This module will also offer you the opportunity to enhance your understanding of medicine management and pharmacology supported by additional e-learning materials.
The module will focus on issues of patient safety including, assessment, decision-making and communication within teams. You will also learn about strategic health priorities, risk, human factors and incident management. Some of your learning will be with students from other fields of nursing and other professional programmes providing the opportunity to learn more about other roles in the multidisciplinary team.
You will continue to develop your professional portfolio and will be asked to reflect effectively on contemporary patient safety priorities. These dynamic learning opportunities will help illustrate how you can gather evidence of your increasing abilities and confidence as you work towards becoming an independent practitioner.

Public Health in Contemporary Nursing (NC, 20 Credits)

Promoting the health and well-being of children, young people and adults through facilitation of health enhancing activities, is a pre-requisite of the nursing role and this module aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills to do this successfully.You will learn about contemporary public health, implications for the population and relevance to all fields of practice. As you develop your understanding you will learn how to analyse the impact of national and local public health policy on individuals including people with a learning disability or experiencing a physical or mental health problem. You will explore a range of public health strategies, health promotion approaches and models used in clinical practice and cover a wide range of topics, such as, smoking, obesity, dementia, sexual health and alcohol. This module takes a technology enabled learning (TEL) approach using a ‘flipped classroom’ which means you will have access to online e-learning packages before the seminars and practicals. Understanding of public health theory is developed through formative learning exercises within the e-lectures and this knowledge is then shared and applied to fields of practice within seminars and practicals with your lecturers and peers. You will apply your learning within a summative assignment requiring you to analyse your current practice and make recommendations for improvement where appropriate. You will also appraise the role of the nurse in health improvement within your field of practice and consider service user involvement within public health decision making using an interprofessional approach to Making Every Contact Count.

Enhancing the care of older people in contemporary society (NC, 20 Credits)

During this module you will develop knowledge and understanding of the complex needs of older people within the context of health and social care. Exploration of theories of ageing and reflection upon professional values, attitudes and behaviours will support your understanding of the ageing process. You will develop an appreciation of the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach in the assessment, management and ongoing support for older people and their family, friends or carers. The module will develop your knowledge and competence in caring for older people across health and life continua: from living well, acute illness, intermediate care, frailty, ongoing long term care to end of life, providing understanding of significant issues at transitional points.
You will be enabled to deliver safe, effective and person centred care by the development of robust clinical decision making through comprehensive evidence based assessments, including risk.
The module will require you to critically appraise relevant theory, political drivers and empirical research in relation to ageing and gerontological nursing, seeking to explore its application to health and care management to meet the diverse needs of people in later life.
A vital component to module delivery is service user and clinician involvement. Aligned to the ethos of caring for older people, key module topics include: -

During this module you will address the care required and the impacts upon patients with long-term conditions and their complex needs within adult nursing. There will be focus as appropriate upon the transition into adult care of young adults with long term conditions. You will develop an appreciation of
local and national perspectives of care delivery which impact on how care is delivered. You will be encouraged within seminars to explore leadership and management perspective to care delivery which will include management of risk.

Key module topics include;

• Critically analyse the nursing care delivery and the provision of holistic person centred care of the adult, across the age spectrum, in the context of patients/clients with long-term conditions and complex needs.
• Critically appraise the role of the multi-professional team in partnership with service users/carers to meet the patients/clients complex needs.
• Critically analyse the political, psychological, socio-cultural, legal and ethical issues relating to adults with complex needs.
• Demonstrate an understanding and critical application of the relevant knowledge of physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology.
• Promote the independence and self-management of patients/clients with long-term conditions and complex needs.
• Socio-cultural issues e.g. epidemiology, specific health care needs of individuals from ethnic and other minorities, meeting spiritual and religious needs.

You will also explore the role of the nurse and other healthcare professionals in the rehabilitation process and promotion of self-management which will include psychological issues relating to care management and coping strategies.

This module will provide you with a unique opportunity to develop skills and knowledge directly relevant to your third year practice placement experiences and prepare you for working life as a qualified nurse. It will specifically focus on leading and improving nursing practice, management and leadership.
While in university you will be updating and exploring in greater depth some of the skills you acquired in previous years, including moving and handling (M&H), basic life support (BLS), first aid and information governance. You will continue to have the opportunity to practice in a simulated environment and learn more about medicine management.
You will be asked to critically reflect and debate contemporary theories and explore service improvement models, which support sustainable service improvement. You will critically explore the role of collaboration and partnership working, with service users and members of the multidisciplinary team. You will be provided with opportunities to critically reflect on your own personal and professional responsibility for your continued development as a manager of safe and effective care delivery and as a future leader of service improvement in nursing practice. You will also learn about team leadership in an interprofessional working context and the challenges of leading teams in a realistic care environment to ensure patient and staff safety. Some of your learning will be with students from other fields of nursing and other professional programmes.

The purpose of this module is for you to consolidate and further develop your knowledge and skills from your BSc (Hons) Nursing studies to undertake and produce an evidenced based practice report specific to your field of nursing. The module will allow you to critically explore ways in which current research evidence and health care policy can be used to inform and develop patient care. Building upon the research and evidence based practice skills in previous modules you will be able to source, critically appraise and synthesise findings from current research to make informed recommendations to inform and develop clinical practice. On successful completion of your report, many of the skills developed will help facilitate your transition to masters studies.
