Our teaching methods include lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions and group projects as well as tutor-directed and self-directed research. There’s a strong emphasis on problem-solving because we believe that you’ll learn best when you’re engaged in applying what we teach.

Assessment methods are designed to give you feedback as well as to monitor your level of achievement. They include assessed projects that will enable you to test your skills and understanding. For most modules, though not all of them, the main method of assessment is coursework and not exams.

Northumbria University provides outstanding facilities for engineering. We have specialist laboratories for smart materials and composites, building and construction, control and instrumentation, and fluids and thermodynamics. 

Our rapid prototyping room will make it easy for you to bring your design projects to life, and our modelling workshop offers tools and specialist equipment for modelling your designs. All our facilities are backed up by specialist technicians who will give support and advice when you need it.

To facilitate group projects, there is a working space called The Hub that’s well equipped for meetings and working with IT. The Zone is another area that’s popular with students undertaking group work or individual study.

Our ‘learning by doing’ approach will give you an in-depth understanding and skills that are sought by employers. The curriculum is designed with a very strong vocational/professional emphasis that’s informed directly by the industrial expertise of staff and industrial liaison committees.

Academic Language Skills for Mechanical and Construction Engineering (Optional, 0 Credits)

Academic skills when studying away from your home country can differ due to cultural and language differences in teaching and assessment practices. This module is designed to support your transition in the use and practice of technical language and subject specific skills around assessments and teaching provision in your chosen subject. The overall aim of this module is to develop your abilities to read and study effectively for academic purposes; to develop your skills in analysing and using source material in seminars and academic writing and to develop your use and application of language and communications skills to a higher level.

The topics you will cover on the module include:

• Understanding assignment briefs and exam questions.
• Developing academic writing skills, including citation, paraphrasing, and summarising.
• Practising ‘critical reading’ and ‘critical writing’
• Planning and structuring academic assignments (e.g. essays, reports and presentations).
• Avoiding academic misconduct and gaining credit by using academic sources and referencing effectively.
• Listening skills for lectures.
• Speaking in seminar presentations.
• Presenting your ideas
• Giving discipline-related academic presentations, experiencing peer observation, and receiving formative feedback.

Advanced Manufacturing Systems (Core, 20 Credits)

You will learn about various advanced aspects related to manufacturing systems including systems approach and analysing the behaviour under both steady state and dynamic conditions; industrial automation and control; electrical and pneumatic control systems; and manufacturing philosophies/ tools. You will cover how these tools and philosophies can be used for conventional as well as non-conventional manufacturing systems. You will focus on the critical application of those systems in order to solve complex problems, including those in unfamiliar environments. You will learn about engaging with the theoretical knowledge: through seminar sessions and by exploring specific case studies.

Mechanical Design & Analysis (Core, 20 Credits)

You will learn about the application of advanced design techniques and technologies for mechanical engineering problems. The headline issues you will be covering in this module are design techniques (DFM, DFA, DFMEA, DOE etc.), design process, integrated CAE systems (CAD, CAM, FEA and CFD), sustainable design and critical thinking and performance review. All these headline issues are interconnected and you are expected to meet learning outcomes of the module by employing an interconnected approach for these critical concepts. You will learn from lecturers and seminars and apply this, to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding, undertaking both individual exercises ( product deconstruction and revitalisation) and group activity based exercises (design, analyse, simulate, manufacture and test)

Mechanical System Design (Core, 20 Credits)

You will focus on Mechanical engineering system design and detailed skills required to design reliable machines through a systematic approach to engineering design encompassing the generic engineering design process, design methodology and components design. You will develop the skill of conducting analytical studies and apply critical thinking and comprehensiveness to your findings in order to evaluate the pros and cons of a range of options enabling you to identify the optimal strategy to develop further. Additionally, you will learn to communicate your analysis and design ideas succinctly in a professional manner both verbally and visually. You will gain experience of interpreting a design brief and identifying the key goals that must be achieved as well as areas where some flexibility may be negotiated or be desirable in order to optimise the outcome. You will learn how to think creatively in order to see an engineering problem from a number of perspectives in order that the optimal solution can be identified from the range of possible strategies.

Design Engineering Project (Core, 40 Credits)

This module will develop the students ability to demonstrate, on an individual basis, their technical skills in designing, analysing and applying technology and engineering design to a particular task. The module also will help develop self reliance and individual responsibility.
The student will be provided with a range of predefined project titles and specifications, in the appropriate technological area, at the start of semester 1 of the session.

To meet University requirements and gain practical experience, students must perform a risk assessment to identify potential risks/hazards associated with the project.

During semester 1, the student will produce a planning/progress report. With their supervisor’s guidance, this will help the student to develop some of the key skills necessary to carry out a significant engineering project. These skills include how to prepare a project plan, how to prepare a time schedule for a project, how to do a literature search and analyse different engineering systems / projects related to their project.
In semester 2, the students must produce a final report. This report will build upon the first report and further develop key engineering skills such as time management, analysing their own performance in relation to the original time schedule. At the end of semester two each individual student will be required to provide practical demonstration / poster presentation to the supervisor, second markers and peers.

By following this process students will develop key transferable skills that can be applied to most industries.

Project Management and Professional Development (Core, 20 Credits)

This module will further develop your academic skills in the planning and control of projects to the level expected on a final year of an undergraduate degree programme. You will learn about project management techniques and professional issues associated with industry and will enhance your critical reflection and other transferable skills which will aid your studies and support your career progression after graduating.

The module will help you to develop a strong appreciation of the key issues associated with the disciplines of professional development and management and of business practices in project management. The requirements expected from a student on a final year of an undergraduate degree programme, in terms of the need to critically analyse, evaluate and reflect on material from relevant sources and from your own personal development will be covered. You will learn about a range of techniques to assist in project management and your academic study on a final year of an undergraduate degree programme. You will study tools and techniques to enable you to set out a personal professional development strategy and plan, and the tools and techniques to conduct critical research and evaluation.

The syllabus of the module will cover topics such as:
• Key concepts, tools, techniques and approaches to project management; functions of a project manager; different types of projects; impact of people on projects
• Project management essentials: planning; scheduling; estimating; risk management; resource allocation; monitoring and control; closing projects; use of a PC-based project management tool
• Staffing considerations: selecting project teams; managing project teams; personnel training and motivation; appreciation of the computing marketplace
• Quality issues; what is quality; quality assurance; quality control; quality plans; configuration management and version control
• Professional issues: professionalism as a concept, impact of professionalism on personal development responsibilities and duties of a project manager; professional codes
• Independent learning, academic expectations and conduct, developing research techniques, using on-line support, developing skills for critical analysis, academic report writing, time-management , learning and studying / learning styles, reflecting on your academic experiences, preparing for projects, planning for the future
