From 2019/20, this course is only open to graduates of the Gateshead College Foundation Degree in Building Services Engineering.

Architectural engineers (also called building services engineers in the UK) make sure that buildings reliably function as intended by architects. Their specialisms include heating, ventilation, lighting, power, escalators and security. At Northumbria, our Mechanical and Architectural Engineering course focuses on sustainability, ensuring that our graduates acquire the skills they need to become specialists in building energy modelling and passive design techniques.

The core of the course is the same as for our BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering, where you will study subjects such as engineering analytics, engineering science and manufacturing systems. You’ll also study specialist architectural engineering modules covering thermal conditioning systems, low carbon thermal systems, thermal and visual analysis, and electrical and lighting systems. An application of mathematics is an important aspect of the course.


CIBSE logoThis course will be accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

This BEng (Hons) course is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer. You can fully meet the requirement for Chartered Engineer registration by studying for an additional year and gaining an MEng (Hons).

There is currently a shortage of mechanical and architectural engineers so, by taking this course, you’ll have excellent career prospects.

Course in brief

Your course in brief

Year 1

Year one You will learn about various common Building Services Systems by studying modules in Thermal Conditioning Systems, Energy Systems, and Fluid Systems.

Year 2

Year two You will continue to develop your specialist knowledge through modules in Engineering Management and Economics; Electrical Lighting Systems; Sustainable Energy Systems; and Low Carbon Thermal Systems.

Year 3

Year three You will conclude your degree by studying modules in Building Thermal and Visual Analysis, and Advanced Manufacturing Systems. You will undertake a major Investigative Design Project in a topic of your choice.

How to Apply

How to Apply

Application for most courses is direct to the University via our online application form. Simply click on the 'Apply Online' button you will see on each of our course entries.

However, there are some courses where the application method is not directly to the University. These are:


Postgraduate Research
If you wish to apply for postgraduate research then please submit a research enquiry.

Application Deadlines 

Whilst most of our courses do not set an exact deadline for applications, you are advised to apply early to secure your place and organise any sponsorship or funding. Overseas students should submit applications to us by no later than 31 July for courses starting in early September or 1 December for courses that commence in January. This allows sufficient time to process our decision, for you to obtain visas and to organise your accommodation and travel arrangements.

Graduate Teacher Training Courses
Equal consideration is given to all applications received by UCAS Teacher Training by the main application deadline, details of all deadlines can be found on the UTT website.

Law professional courses

 Master of Fine Art (MFA)

Master of Fine Art (MFA) We encourage all applications to the MFA programme for entry in September 2017 to apply prior to our guaranteed application review date of 1st June 2017. After this date, we will review applications subject to there being remaining spaces on the programme.


Decision Making Process

Most courses require at least one reference, but some may need two. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure Northumbria receives a satisfactory academic reference. If you have not been in education for a number of years, then a reference from your employer may be acceptable.

We try to reply to applicants as soon as possible but you should receive a response within 10 working days, and this will be one of the following.

  • Conditional offer which will normally be upon the completion of your undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification and achieving a particular classification or grade. You will be required to send us a confirmation that you have passed your current degree course as soon as you receive notification to enable us to confirm your offer. 
  • Unconditional offer is made if you have already met the entry requirements of your chosen course 
  • Reject your application 

You will be asked to confirm your acceptance in writing of any offer made.

Fairness and Transparency
The University is committed to a system of admissions that ensures fairness, transparency and equal opportunities within the legal framework of the UK and best practice. All reasonable effort will be made to ensure that no prospective or existing student is unreasonably treated less favourably on the grounds of age, race, colour, nationality, ethnic origin, creed, disability, sexual orientation, gender, marital or parental/carer status, political belief or social or economic class, or any other type of discrimination.

Tuition Fee Assessment
Tuition fees are set at different levels for Home/EU and International Students. Before you begin your course the University must establish your tuition fee status. In many cases, the University will be able to make this assessment without requiring any additional information.

Guidance can be found on the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) website to help you understand how Higher Education Institutions (HEI's) make an assessment on your fee status.

Selection Process 

Applicants who may not have the standard entry qualifications are welcome to apply and may be interviewed. Some courses will interview as part of the selection process. This applies particularly to courses in art and design, teaching and health.

Health Screening
Applicants for Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Primary (Early Years) and Social Work will be required to complete a health questionnaire. They may be required to attend for doctor or nurse assessment at the University Health Centre.

Prior to beginning their programme, all applicants to Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy are advised to start a course of Hepatitis B vaccinations, available from their own GP. In addition, Midwifery applicants must provide evidence before they commence training that they are immune to Hepatitis B or have Hepatitis B non-carried status.

Applicants to these courses who have had contact with MRSA in the previous 6 months may be asked to provide evidence that they are not colonised by submitting negative swabs results prior to commencement of training. Alternatively, they may be screened on commencement of the programme.

All applicants will receive vaccination screening at the University Health Centre on commencement of their programme.

Disclosure of Criminal Background
To help the University reduce the risk of harm or injury to any member of its community caused by the criminal behaviour of other students, it must know about any relevant criminal convictions an applicant has.

Relevant criminal convictions are only those convictions for offences against the person, whether of a violent or sexual nature, and convictions for offences involving unlawfully supplying controlled drugs or substances where the conviction concerns commercial drug dealing or trafficking. Convictions that are spent (as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974) are not considered to be relevant and you should not reveal them.

If you are applying for courses in teaching, health, social work and courses involving work with children or vulnerable adults, you must complete the section of your UCAS application form entitled 'Criminal Convictions'. You must disclose any criminal convictions, including spent sentences and cautions (including verbal cautions) and bindover orders. Further information on how to complete this section is available from the UCAS booklet 'How to Apply'. For these courses, applicants are required to undergo police clearance for entry and will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced disclosure form. The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children. It replaces the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). Access to the DBS checking service is only available to registered employers who are entitled by law to ask an individual to reveal their full criminal history, including spent convictions - also known as asking 'an exempted question'. The University is such a 'registered employer' and will send you the appropriate documents to fill in if you are offered a place in the course.

If you are convicted of a relevant criminal offence after you have applied, you must inform the university immediately. Do not send details of the offence; simply tell the University that you have a relevant criminal conviction. You may then be asked to supply more details.

Anti-fraud Checks
Please note that the University follows anti-fraud procedures to detect and prevent fraudulent applications. If it is found that an applicant supplies a fraudulent application then it will be withdrawn.

The University reserves the right to cancel an application or withdraw any offer made if it is found that an application contains false, plagiarised or misleading information.


Disabled Students

Northumbria welcomes enquiries and applications from disabled students whether disability is due to mobility or sensory impairment, specific learning difficulties, mental health issues or a medical condition. Engineering Management & Economics (Core,20 Credits)

You will learn about the most important issues for managing in an engineering environment. We will introduce you to the methods used to make financial decisions in evaluating engineering and manufacturing options from an economic viewpoint. You will learn about working with people by considering the techniques used to evaluate and improve personal, team and organisational efficiency levels. Your learning will be further enhanced with content on how such factors may be influenced by quality control aspects, together with their importance and links in terms of engineering project management. You will be given opportunities to develop as a professional by reflecting upon the role of effective interpersonal communication and personal skills development.

Some of the syllabus areas you will engage with will be:

? Personal development planning, knowledge of relevant legislation and codes of conduct and the need to communicate balanced arguments relating to professional and ethical issues.
? Business Costing / Finance - Financial decision making tools, financial costing systems and budgetary control.
? Industrial engineering - The techniques used to evaluate and improve efficiency in terms of operators, machines, systems and the organisation as a whole.

Thermal Conditioning Systems 1 (Core,20 Credits)

You will learn about the thermal properties and performance of construction materials, how these relate to the energy consumption for heating and cooling and how the use of a building (occupancy), together with its’ thermal performance, influences the energy demand and subsequently the capacity of the systems and plant required in order to make the building comfortable.

You will learn about thermal comfort and the balance between the consumption of energy in providing thermal comfort, within the boundaries of the Legislative requirements, for the conservation of fuel and power.

You will learn the basis of the calculation procedures involved in the assessment of heating and cooling loads, utilising Architectural Engineering software, broader research material, technical indexes and search engines to reflect professional practice.

Fluid Systems (Core,20 Credits)

You will learn about the fluid systems for incompressible and compressible flows. You will start with the significance of non-dimensional numbers in the context of model and prototype testing. Practical fluid flow machineries will be studied in detail. You will consider boundary layer theory and viscous flow with application to bearing lubrication and heat transfer during condensation. You will also study compressible flows and application to converging-diverging nozzle. You will be introduced to Computational Fluid Dynamics and will be able to simulate practical laboratory data using a state of the art CFD software.

Thermal Systems 2 (Core,20 Credits)

You will build upon your knowledge of psychrometrics, gained in Thermal Conditioning Systems 1, as you learn how to design commonly used UK air conditioning systems, namely; constant volume dew point control, constant volume sequenced control and fan coil units.
You will use your knowledge of fundamental fluid flow, gained in the ‘Fluid Systems’ module, to learn how to design practical duct work systems using the equal friction method.
The key components of air handling and refrigeration plant (including refrigeration cycles) will be explored in order to build your understanding of practical air conditioning equipment selection and sizing.
You will learn how to design heating systems for buildings in order to meet the efficiency requirements of the Building Regulations (Part L). Your understanding of fluid flow will be applied to the design of pipework systems where you will learn about initial and critical pipe sizing and how to select an appropriate pump. The need to pressurise water based heating systems will be explored and you will learn through this the fundamental differences between low, medium and high pressure hot water heating systems. The application of variable speed pumping will also be studied and you will learn how to quantify the advantages and challenges that such an approach presents.
You will also learn about the provision, design and sizing of domestic hot and cold water systems for buildings.

Energy Systems (Core,20 Credits)

You will learn about energy conversion systems and technologies and their application in energy generation and transportation sectors. You will be facilitated thoroughly in your comprehensive multi-dimensional and interconnected understanding on steam power cycles, heat transfer, IC engines, combustion and heating systems, air conditioning systems, energy audit and problem solving during this single semester module. You will be given opportunities on several occasion during the course of your learning journey to develop as a professional by reflecting upon the case studies and problems related to these topics we shall be covering during seminars in particular.

Electrical and Lighting Systems (Core,20 Credits)

You will learn to understand the design principles and strategies to enable you to design efficient electrical and lighting systems within buildings. Specifically, you will study the following subject areas:

Sustainable Energy Systems (Core,20 Credits)

You will gain knowledge and skills to allow you to begin to evaluate and make decisions about key areas which you are likely to encounter as your career develops in Engineering. You will learn to understand, design and analyses advanced sustainable and renewable energy conversion systems and technologies and their application to energy generation problems. The advanced systems to be investigated are combined heat and power systems, heat pumps and refrigeration systems, PV systems and fuel cells, solar thermal systems and geothermal, hydro and wind turbines and towards the end you will learn about energy generation assessment and applications.

Low Carbon Thermal Systems (Core,20 Credits)

You will learn about thermal systems for the generation of low carbon heat and electrical power in buildings focusing on combined heat and power systems and heat pump systems. You will review the thermodynamic theories involved followed by the application of these theories to practical system options for buildings, and then go on to learn how to analyse the economics of these systems in use.
You will study combined heat and power (CHP) system thermodynamic cycles; the capacity-rating and economics of CHP systems for a range of building applications; biomass gasification and processing, biomass boilers and biomass heating economics. You will explore high temperature heat network design, pressurisation and antiflash margins and expansion mitigation measures. You will also look at heat pump thermodynamic cycles and the capacity-rating, integration, thermal storage and economics of heat pump systems.

Investigative Project (Core,40 Credits)

You will learn about and demonstrate how to apply the knowledge and skills developed earlier in your degree programme whilst also extending your independent learning through a deep investigation of a topic, which may be of your own choice. You will develop your ability to plan, direct, progress and take responsibility for your own large scale investigative project.
You may be involved in the choice of the topic of your investigation and also be able to lead the direction of the investigation under the guidance of a supervisor. Your investigation will draw upon a broad range of existing engineering knowledge and practice, apply advanced engineering techniques, allow you to draw your own conclusions supported by your findings and enable you to present your results in a professional manner.

Building Thermal & Visual Analysis (Core,20 Credits)

You will learn about human physiology related to the nature of heat and lightand how theory relates to the procedures adopted for the design of thermal systems and daylighting within buildings. You will aslo learn about the provision of ventilation in the reduction of air borne contaminants and about the science of light, vision and colour in respect of the built environment. You will also become familiar with industry standard software tools (e.g. IES Virtual Environment) for assessing and improving building performance through daylight simulations and dynamic thermal analsyis. The role of these software tools for improving building performance and also for proving compliance with approved document part L2A will be addressed.

Advanced Manufacturing Systems (Core,20 Credits)

You will learn about various advanced aspects related to manufacturing systems including industrial automation and control; electrical and pneumatic control systems; and manufacturing philosophies/ tools. You will cover how these tools and philosophies can be used for conventional as well as non-conventional manufacturing systems. You will focus on the critical application of those systems in order to solve complex problems, including those in unfamiliar environments. You will learn about engaging with the theoretical knowledge: through seminar sessions and by exploring specific case studies.
