What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about the key elements of strategic management and planning within a sporting context. You will be introduced to how the external environment can impact upon strategic planning and an organisation’s effectiveness. You will be shown how, having a greater understanding of organisational theory and organisational behaviour, will help you in the future, by providing you with a greater insight into organisational change and how to manage it effectively. Topics that will be covered in this module include: organisational theory & behaviour; organisational design; inter-cultural management; change management, evaluating strategic effectiveness and efficiency.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through lectures, workshops, and independent learning. The lectures will cover theories and concepts that will enable you to tackle a series of guided exercises. You will work on these during seminar and workshop sessions to apply theory to practice and to gain a greater understanding of how to become an effective sport manager. You will undertake practice in developing your management, communication and presentation skills, whilst receiving tutor feedback on your progress.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Support will include feedback from tutors during lectures, small-group seminars and tutorials. In addition tutors will respond to questions via the module’s discussion board at the University’s eLearning Portal (eLP) so that the whole group can benefit. Module tutors will use online resources and the eLP to provide support materials. Prior to summative assessments module staff will deliver an assessment briefing session. After assessment one, feed-forward will be provided by staff to assist with assessment two.

1. Critically identify and understand organisational theory and behaviour in relation to sport organisations.

2. Comment critically and constructively on the management of sport, focussing on different organisational structures and organisational cultures.

3. Identify and analyse the primary influences on the management of sport and organisational change.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment: Formal lectures will introduce you to key concepts, which will then be applied within seminars and workshop settings. You will work in groups and practice your management, communication and presentation skills to complete specific tasks using real life scenarios. Feedback will be given both on the content and presentation performance. This will assist students in preparing for the assessment.
Summative assessment 1: Report (3,000 words). Using a relevant sport organisation, as your case study, you will critically examine how the external environment can impact upon the strategic planning process of the organisation. This will include undertaking external and internal analyses of the organisation and reviewing if they are effective in achieving their strategic objectives. (100%). (MLOs 1, 2, 3) Electronic feedback will be given on the script and also verbally in class.

Module abstract

“Strategic Management in Sport” aims to provide you with a critical understanding of strategic management and planning within a sporting context. The module introduces you to the core concepts of organisational theory & behaviour; organisational design; inter-cultural management; change management, evaluating strategic effectiveness and efficiency. Working with “world renowned” teachers in the field of sport management, you will experience interactive and “fun” teaching styles that help aid your learning and understanding. You will be taught all about the key skills, roles and competences that are needed in today’s sport industry, such insights will then help give you that “cutting edge” when you apply for that dream sport job. The content of the module will be research informed and applied and the assessment will reflect this focussing on key functions within sport management and the various career opportunities that are involved within the subject discipline.
