If you have a passion for mathematics and quantitative finance, and want to use it to build a lucrative career within financial research, then this is the ideal course for you.

Building on your undergraduate studies in a quantitative subject such as economics, accounting or engineering, this course provides a research-orientated approach to finance and investment. You will delve into specialist areas such as econometrics & forecasting, financial markets & institutions, and investments & risk management, and develop advanced analytical and evaluative skills.

You will make extensive use of our Bloomberg trading suite, where our Bloomberg terminals will give you invaluable access to live data from financial markets across the globe. You’ll use this, combined with our advance econometric packages, to build advance econometric models for the purposes of forecasting, developing trading strategies and examining policy implications for financial markets.

The course is regularly refreshed to keep pace with advances in the financial sector, and is benchmarked against the syllabus of the CFA Institute.

The knowledge and experience you gain on this course will allow you to forge a successful research career. You can either progress within academia by continuing onto a PhD, or seek a position within the international financial sector as quantitative research analyst, where they are in high demand.

If you are interested in a more general managerial career within the financial sector, and your undergraduate degree didn’t equip you for this specialist course, then you might be interested in MSc International Financial Management.

Study Abroad

One of the key challenges facing any student planning to undertake a business-related degree is how to compete in the job market with business graduates around the world who are also trying to ignite their business career. We know from experience and talking to employers that international awareness is a key differentiator.

Many of our students have already taken the first step by travelling hundreds or thousands of miles to study in an unfamiliar environment. However the international exchange option takes that to the next level. We are developing exchange opportunities in Asia, Europe and South America that will give students the prospect to create a truly unique selling proposition to future employers.

Students spend one semester studying business (taught and assessed in English) in another international domain. In some cases there will be an opening for basic level study of the language and culture of the host region.

You will leave Newcastle Business School highly knowledgeable about the theory and practice of international finance and investment, with the ability to act and think strategically, well equipped to begin the next stage of your career.
