BA (Hons) Interaction Design will equip you with the skills to design the next digital innovation. Smartphones, games consoles, VR headsets, tablets, laptops and smart watches all use interfaces and applications designed by talented graduates who have studied in this programme.

The studio-based IMD course is research and industry informed and has been developed to be adaptive and responsive to your needs. The variety of teaching approaches, including lectures, seminars, online courses, workshops and learning by demonstration, will challenge your ideas and support your personal development.

In year one you will be introduced to key aspects of IMD through a combination of projects, problems and challenges. As the course progresses you will explore key methods and practices in more depth, work to project briefs and you will be given the opportunity to enrol in an internship in an IMD studio.

The course offers flexible, project-based learning with no exams. It is a paperless course, and all submissions are digital. Assessment is designed to support student-centred learning and progress is supported by verbal and written feedback to make clear your achievements, and identify ways for you to grow as an interactive designer.

Core modules introduce students to design for interactive technology including smartphone and tablet applications, website and interactive digital content production.

Game and Experiential

Game development and physical computing modules allow students to explore a wide range of cutting-edge technologies for visual communication, including VR and interactive smart objects.

From leading roles in industry to internationally renowned research, our teaching team bring a wealth of experience to the course. You will be able to draw from the expertise of lecturers who are actively involved in projects that range from avatars and the digital revolution and smart environments and digital branding. Our academics also take leading roles in groups such as the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Economic and Social Research Council and have chaired numerous conferences within the industry.

We have extensive industry contacts across creative agencies, interactive design agencies and game design studios, many of whom have been involved in shaping the course. In addition, industry contacts act as clients for the majority of module projects, which enables you to build your network whilst you study.

On this studio-based course much of your design and technical work is carried out using state-of-the-art computing, electronics and prototyping infrastructure. You will be exposed to the latest in web design and programming, applications development, game development as well as developments in physical computing.

Many aspects of the course focus on the use of interactive technology including smartphone and tablet applications, website and interactive digital content production. We heavily use the eLearning portal and other online sources to deliver learning resources and all year groups have a dedicated Facebook group.

The course is paperless, and apart from few specific documents, based on the submission of interactive digital content.

Facilities / Studio Spaces

Each year group has its own studio space which includes specialist design software to support the collaborative working practices to test and develop ideas digitally and on paper. Prototyping spaces and experiential design studio are equipped with specialist technology including 3D printers, robotic lighting rigs and Virtual Reality systems.

This course has research at its foundation and the student at its centre. Each year includes a research-specific module, with an increased level of sophistication and depth as you progress.

All staff are research-active and this is reflected into the design and content of the course. Department research explores the many roles played by the media in a wide range of social contexts.  We have a strong commitment to interdisciplinary work, to the development of relationships with the cultural and creative industries, and to engagement with groups and communities that use and interact with media.

Academics in Interaction Design are focused on meeting the challenges presented by 21st century technology, with work being undertaken in the creative digital economy and in creating innovative products, devices, services and experiences that offer significant improvements to people's quality of life.

This innovative and highly regarded course focuses on developing key competencies and skills that are highly sought after by industry.

Our extensive contacts across creative agencies, interactive design agencies and game design studios play an active part in the course.  Some of our recent collaborations are based around highly imaginative visions of the future e.g. our work with Orange or Microsoft. Others are grounded in current design practice e.g. app design concepts with leading digital agency R/GA or have immediate real world needs such as branding and website design for local charity Oswin Project. This experience gives you a flavour of life after graduation and helps to make your CV stand out.

You will complete a professional practice module during Year 2 comprising either a company internship or a research project, ideal for those considering postgraduate study.  You are also encouraged to create a digital portfolio throughout the three years to demonstrate your progress and showcase your knowledge and skills.

Standard Entry

A portfolio of creative design work available for consideration at interview

This portfolio containing examples of your work is to help us understand your creative experience and potential ability to undertake a degree in Design. It should evidence your interests in your creative specialism to date. It may include past and current school or college work, personal projects, work in progress and other work that you feel demonstrates your creative potential.

GCSE Requirements:

A good GCSE profile is expected including Maths and English Language at minimum grade C or equivalent.  If you have studied for a new GCSE for which you will be awarded a numerical grade then you will need to achieve a minimum grade 4.

Introduction to Web Publishing (Core, 20 Credits)

You will learn how to design and develop basic websites. You will be introduced to the methods and principles of web design through following a structured information architecture process. You will then learn how to author a basic website by hand coding pages in HTML and CSS. Furthermore, you may also learn about other relevant design fields such as branding, digital marketing and information design through the creation of content for your website.

IxD Methods & Practices (Core, 20 Credits)

You will learn what design research is and the methods used to investigate people and their use of technology. In the process you will learn how to conduct your own research by being exposed to a number of research methods, such as information architecture, personae, wireframing, and prototyping.
This module aims to help you discover, understand and learn about the basics of Interaction Design and in particular what methods and practices are currently used by professionals to design Interactive Systems, Products, Services or Experiences.

Physical Computing (Core, 20 Credits)

We need to design computing and interactive systems that go beyond the conventional PC or tablet. The world into which we live is physical and we are continuously moving around, handling objects and transforming it. These issues amongst many are at the origin of this module on Physical computing. It encourage you to design, programme, construct and demonstrate interactive prototypes. To do so, you will use sensors, actuators and control boards that you will assemble into a circuit of your design and you will then programme to deliver a function of your choice. You will use various sensors such as Light-Dependent Resistors, Pressure Gauges, Ultrasonic Sensors, Pressure Pad. As for actuators you will rely on servo-motors, speakers, buzzers and LED. For the control board you will use ARDUINO boards that you will connect to a PC. You will rely on the ARDUINO IDE to programming and debugging. You will learn to become familiar with translating designs into circuits and programmes; and translating interaction concepts into prototypes.

Principles of Interaction Design (IxD) (Core, 20 Credits)

You will learn what is Interaction Design and the principles that are at its foundations. It is a design discipline that is evolving at an extraordinarily fast pace. You will learn what are the key points of the design process and how, in similar fashion to other design process, IxD is iterative and cyclical.
You will be introduced to the current trends and principles in IxD and some in-depth presentations will be given to you as well, on topics that are related to current research of the lecturer and the programme.
The whole module is setup to introduce you to the practices, skills and knowledge necessary to design interactions.
We need to design interactive systems products and services that include phone applications, games, Web sites and front panels for microwave ovens. The world into which we live is more and more experienced via interactions. These issues amongst many are at the origin of this module, which encourages you to understand, specify, design, prototype, test and demonstrate interactive prototypes. To do so, you will use a collection of tools and techniques that will be introduced in the module, notably interaction storyboard, rapid prototyping, flowchart, and interaction mock-ups. You will learn to become familiar with translating interaction designs into prototypes and demonstrations.

Principle of Visual Design (Core, 20 Credits)

You will learn and apply the principles of visual design relevant for Interaction Design students. These include principles of typography, semiotics, design styles and movements, grid systems, photo composition and manipulation, communication theory, colour theory and information design. You will be given the opportunity to design a printed and a digital version of a publication.

TransMedia (Core, 20 Credits)

The module encourages you to employ experimental and imaginative approaches to concept, process and final realisation of their projects – skills essential to the creation of digital artworks and to the creative industries in general. It also provides you with a greater awareness of the creative context in which to locate their work. You will produce a transmedia narrative working across multiple platforms and formats, including but not limited to video, sound, music, animation, and photography.

Academic skills when studying away from your home country can differ due to cultural and language differences in teaching and assessment practices. This module is designed to support your transition in the use and practice of technical language and subject specific skills around assessments and teaching provision in your chosen subject. The overall aim of this module is to develop your abilities to read and study effectively for academic purposes; to develop your skills in analysing and using source material in seminars and academic writing and to develop your use and application of language and communications skills to a higher level.

The topics you will cover on the module include:

You will learn advanced digital publishing design philosophies and practices, and develop an awareness and understanding of related social media and digital marketing strategies. Application Design (Core, 20 Credits)

You will be introduced to the principles, methods and tools required to design mobile applications and digital services across different platforms. You will broaden your understanding of user experience and usage outcomes by applying relevant theories and standards to interaction design across different platforms. You will develop a good understanding of the relationship between the produced digital artefact and the service it offers to users. You will learn how to create personas, user journeys, scenarios, interaction design paradigms and models, test prototypes, and create professional and finalised digital prototypes of your concept.

Experiental Design (Core, 20 Credits)

This module aims to introduce students to the concept of ‘experiential’ design. This will include theoretical accounts of experience as well as methods for experience-centered design. Practical work will focus on user interaction that takes place in a physical but computer-controlled environment, for example using sensors, or other external devices to control the user experience and interaction. Students will learn the basics of Arduino prototyping, live video processing, projection mapping and alternative means of interface control.

Games Design (Core, 20 Credits)

Game design is a challenging endeavour that requires both rigour and flair. In this module you are required to design a new and original game. You are also required to develop some prototype. The prototype can be either a computer based demonstration (e.g. a game level), or a board game.
The principles behind designing specifically for games and the concept of ‘playability’ will be covered. How to use industry standard authoring software such as Adobe Flash to an intermediate level is also part of this module. Furthermore, a variety of presentations will be given to cover topics such as game theory, game rules, design document, video game analysis, game prototyping.

IxD Professional Practice (Core, 20 Credits)

This module gives you first hand professional experience through a work placement opportunity, live project or collaboration.
In the process you will learn will about the design industry and expectations of professional designers. To support this undertaking, you will learn how to put together an effective online portfolio and how to present and promote yourself. You will also reflect on your experience and your current level of expertise in order to formulate an idea of what would like to learn and develop during the final year of the programme.

You will learn about current and future trends in design and technology, and some of the design research methods and methodologies we can use to investigate them. You will learn how to create research questions and how to plan and investigate them. You will also learn how to write and visualise a design report and create a design artefact to help summarise or hypothesise about your findings.

Design Work Placement Year (Optional, 120 Credits)

The Work Placement Year module is a 120 credit year-long module available on degree courses which include a work placement year, taken as an additional year of study at level 5 and before level 6 (the length of the placement(s) will be determined by your programme but it can be no less than 30 weeks. You will undertake a guided work placement at a host organisation. This is a Pass/Fail module and so does not contribute to classification. When taken and passed, however, the Placement Year is recognised in your transcript as a 120 credit Work Placement Module and on your degree certificate in the format – “Degree title (with Work Placement Year)”. The learning and teaching on your placement will be recorded in the work placement agreement signed by the placement provider, the student, and the University.

Note: Subject to placement clearance; this is a competitive process and a place on the module cannot be guaranteed.

Design Study Abroad Year (Optional, 120 Credits)

The Study Abroad Year module is a full year 120 credit module which is available on degree courses which include a study abroad year which is taken as an additional year of study at level 5 and before level 6. You will undertake a year of study abroad at a European University under the ERASMUS+ exchange scheme or at an approved partner University elsewhere. This gives you access to modules from your discipline taught in a different learning culture and so broadens your overall experience of learning. The course of study abroad will be dependent on the partner and will be recorded for an individual student on the learning agreement signed by the host University, the student, and the home University (Northumbria). Your study abroad year will be assessed on a pass/fail basis. It will not count towards your final degree classification but, if you pass, it is recognised in your transcript as a 120 credit Study Abroad Module and on your degree certificate in the format – “Degree title (with Study Abroad Year)”.
