What will I learn on this module?

In this module you will have the opportunity to analyse, in–depth an aspect of leadership in your context. This includes reflection on the leader’s role in relation to a particular area of leadership. You will conduct a small-scale development project on leadership.

The module will also provide you with a framework for examining and analysing secondary data. You will have the opportunity for detailed consideration and examination how effective leadership can identify and implement change. You will also explore and reflect on your own developing leadership skills.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through lectures, seminars and independent learning. The lectures will cover theories and concepts that will enable you to participate in a series of guided tasks and exercises. You will work on these during seminars and practical sessions.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Support will include feedback from tutors during seminars and tutorials. In addition, tutors will respond to questions via the modules’ discussion board on the University’s eLearning Portal so that the whole group can benefit.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
• (1) You will develop a critical understanding of what is involved in a small scale research project
• (2) You will develop a critical understanding of leadership roles in school contexts.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
• (1) Critically examine a leadership topic or issue of professional interest or relevance.
• (2) Identify and critically evaluate management and leadership research methods
• (3) Identify and critically analyse appropriate secondary data which provide an insight into a leadership topic/issue.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment:
Part A:
Produce an executive summary which:
• Identifies an aspect of leadership in your context which could be developed or changed.
• Provide a rationale for your choice
• Outline the range of secondary data you will access and use to inform your project.
• (500-750 words)

Part B:
During the course of the module you will be required to complete a leadership self-assessment task which analyses your developing leadership skills, knowledge and attitudes.

You are advised to submit both of these formative assessments must be included as appendices in your summative assessment task.

Summative Assessment:
Produce fully developed project proposal which has been informed by a well-developed literature based rationale /justification which demonstrates a justification for the focus of the project. It should also provide a contextual statement which outlines the importance of the project for your school, supported by an analysis of relevant secondary data. A clear outline of how the project is to be implemented and its expected outcomes should be clearly defined. (4500 words)

NB: Before commencing this piece of action research, you will be required to submit your proposed piece of research for ethical approval by the module tutor.
