The MComp (Hons) Computer Science with Web Development is an integrated masters course for those with high career aspirations. It will give you an extra edge in today’s competitive job market and will allow you to explore your subject in greater depth, with a final year that leads to an integrated masters qualification.  The course covers a broad range of computing specialisms and will open the door to a vast range of careers within this industry.

Teaching and Assessment

In your first two years you will study a broad computer science curriculum upon which all computing is based, enabling you to specialise in web development in the final two years to harness and utilise the complex, ever expanding world of the Internet.

You will gain advanced skills in designing and programming dynamic and responsive web based systems that process and integrate content from multiple sources, including third party web services like Google Maps, social media and remote databases, and in web systems engineering. This will include development using a leading Cloud-based service provider such as Amazon or Google.

Your final year will be your Masters-level year, when you will work in advanced areas, and continue your choice of specialism, allowing you to gain the skills that set you apart from the rest  you

Your assessments are designed to help you develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required of a computer science graduate. You will be assessed through a variety of different methods including exams, reports, presentations, individual, group and project work.

We are living in a digital age where all of our lives are impacted by computer sciences and digital technologies, from cyber security and computational intelligence to games and visual effects. You will be immersed in a research-rich environment with new and exciting insights into the discipline by our rapidly expanding Computer Science research groups.

You will be taught by staff with a strong academic background in areas such as, Computational Linguistics, Web Programming and Informational Visualisation. With access to diverse research work carried out by our expert academic staff, we seek to promote innovative and excellent learning and teaching practice, which will improve your student experience here at Northumbria.

Here at Northumbria, we know how valuable work experience can be in terms of giving you a head start in your career so we enable you to gain real-world experience on a yearlong professional placement in your third year on this course.

Previous students have had the opportunity to go on a placement in blue chip companies such as Hewett Packard and GlaxoSmithKline and at CERN in Geneva. CERN has doubled the number of students it will take on placement, reflecting the respect and value placed on this degree by prestigious industry professionals.

You will also have the opportunity to study abroad in your third year at a partner institution, enabling you to gain global perspective on your subject and boost your future career prospects.

As a computer science graduate, you could enter a career such as software engineering, systems analysis and design, computer networks, database development and management, software testing, artificial intelligence, embedded systems and web development roles such as, web developer, front-end web developer, back-end web developer, and consultant.
