What will I learn on this module?

This module is designed to be suitable for a variety of networking professional roles including those wishing to gain a deeper understanding of 802.11 protocols, security and enterprise deployment. Additionally, it is suitable for wireless network administrators and support or design staff requiring a greater understanding of the new technologies and applications of modern converged networks and delegates seeking Certified Wireless Network Associate (or similar) certification. You will study the following areas:

Enterprise wireless deployment elements and methodologies.
Basic RF charactersitics for mobile systems
802.11 protocol operation and technologies
wireless security issues and attack vulnerabilities.

How will I learn on this module?

The module will be delivered using lectures, laboratories and a supported research assignment. It will be assessed via an examination and a research paper. The examination will focus on material from the lecture series and the research paper will be used to assess the research assignment.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Staff will deliver both lectures and laboratory sessions and support you during your extended assignment in the second semester. The module is supported by discussion forums that can be used to explore issues outside of classroom time.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Be able to describe, explain critcally and analyse wireless data communication technology along with associated security issues.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
2. Analyse enterpise requirements for wireless systems
3. Analyse 802.11 protocol information
4. Make decisions about designing secure wireless networks

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
5. Understand the global nature of WLAN standards and design.

How will I be assessed?

It will be assessed via an examination and a research paper. The examination will focus on material from the lecture series and the research paper will be used to assess the research assignment.
