What will I learn on this module?

This module develops your understanding and knowledge of reinforced concrete, steel and timber structures; and your ability to design these structures to the Eurocodes. It provides you with the knowledge required to carry out the design of common structural elements to the appropriate National and European Standards and introduces the concept of global stability. ‘Real world’ case study examples will support your development of the skills and understanding required to produce safe, effective, economic and sustainable designs conforming to the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 for structural designs.

The module content includes:


Design of reinforced concrete beams, slabs and columns to Eurocode 2
Preparation of reinforced concrete drawings including details.
Design of steel beams, columns, frames and connections to Eurocode 3
Design of timber posts, beams and connections to Eurocode 5
Use of computer methods to design structures.
Check and validation of the results from computers.

How will I learn on this module?

Learning will be facilitated through a programme of lectures supported by seminars on a weekly basis. Lectures will be used to introduce you to the key principles of structural design, and are planned to progressively increase your knowledge and understanding over the year. You will begin by gaining an understanding of global stability of buildings, before progressing to consider the design of individual structural elements in concrete, steel and timber. You will have the opportunity to use structural analysis software to determine member forces and support reactions; and will learn qualitative hand calculation techniques to validate computer analysis outputs.

Seminars will focus on supporting the development of your design skills and understanding of design principles The case studies and real world scenarios presented in your seminars will facilitate the application and exploration of the knowledge gained in lectures, . Your success in your seminar performance will be communicated in these sessions at the point of delivery to ensure that you receive timely feedback on your performance. . You will practice structural design in seminars, both individually and in groups, by considering a series of real world scenarios; this will your knowledge of structural design principles and behaviour. Your intellectual creativity will be developed by responding to a ‘real world’ client brief, to complete the design of a structure progressively throughout the module as coursework.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Assessment for improvement (with no marks) with feedback and guidance will be a fundamental, underpinning principle in both classroom sessions and during seminars; and you will be afforded the opportunity to present work for comment during the academic year to enable you to gain confidence in your understanding of the module content.

Resources from lecturers and seminars will be uploaded onto the University’s Blackboard site, along with key structural engineering references. , ‘Getwise’ ‘Youtube’ style videos clips will also be available on Blackboard to support your understanding of structural concepts where visualisation can assist. In addition, online self-tests to cement structural design principles will be made available upon the completion of principle subject areas – these are to assist you to improve and thereby do not count towards your final mark.

The reading list for the module is held online and will be accessible via the University’s Blackboard site. As far as possible eBooks have been identified with materials itemised under ‘Key Reference Texts and Design Guides’ and ‘Structural Design Text Book’. The former contains an accessible list of the key structural reference materials needed to complete structural design calculations, while the latter identifies recommended texts to generally support your learning and understanding of structural design methods.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Apply structural analysis and design principles to calculate design loads acting on structures, members and elements.

2. Explain and apply the principles of limit state design to design structural elements made of concrete, steel or timber.

3. Explain the behaviour and design of structural connections on structural elements.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:

4. Present design calculations and sketches in a clear and informative way and communicate effectively using the necessary detailing approaches

5. Appraise the structural design against relevant criteria such as sustainability, CDM regulation, form & function, buildability, etc.

How will I be assessed?

Summative assessment will be by exam and coursework, which will be designed to enable you to demonstrate your ability to satisfy the module's learning outcomes.

The assessment will require you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of design principles and the use of appropriate National and European standard in structural design.

The coursework (learning outcome 1,3,4 and 5) will require you to demonstrate an understanding of structural principles and provide an effective solution to a structural design problems based around a ‘real world’ scenario. You will be required to demonstrate an ability to initiate and communicate structural design, and to respond to the holistic design considerations as covered in the syllabus.

The exam (learning outcome 2) is open book and will require you to demonstrate the use of appropriate standards/regulations to design structural elements made of concrete, steel or timber. Your understanding of principals of limit state design will also be examined.

Formative assessment will occur throughout the module, with informal assessment and review practices integrated into the structured seminar
programme in order to assist your development and preparation for summative assessment. Informal feedback will be given during the seminars by your tutor.

Module abstract

This module aims prepares you for employment as a structural engineer by developing your understanding and knowledge of reinforced concrete, steel and timber structures; and to develop your ability to design these structures to the appropriate National and European Standards, introducing the concept of global stability. ‘Real world’ examples are used to develop your creativity, and the skills and understanding required to produce safe, effective, economic and sustainable designs. Through the module you will respond to a client brief to complete the design of a structure, acquiring key skills to support you in your future professional practice. TEL will be used deliver this module, students will have access to the latest structural analysis software and short video clips will be used to assist your understanding which you can use to practice and explore structural design problems in seminars, gaining rapid feedback on your success from your module tutors.
