What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about the important theories, principles and procedures that form the basis of structural analysis. You will be able to develop analytical skills and an appreciation of how this knowledge might be applied in practice to analyse simple and complex structures. You will focus on types of structure and supports and analysis of stress and strain due to load temperature changes. You will also address the influence lines for determinate structures, analytical principles of indeterminate structures and buckling instability of short and slender columns. Finally basic principles of ultimate load analysis will be introduced.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a programme of 1 hour lectures for 24 weeks supported by 1 hour seminars for 18 weeks and 2 hours practical classes for 6 weeks. Lectures will be used to introduce you to key theories and principles of analysing structures. In seminars and practical classes you will carry out laboratory work and problem solving guided by the tutor and you will have the opportunity to discuss what you are learning to enable you to improve.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will receive support directly from the tutor in classes and through the eLearning portal [blackboard] outside class. You will also have the opportunity to access the tutor through our open door approach through which you should learn to communicate in a professional and organised manner to clarify and expand upon issues which support your study.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:

1. Explain stress and strain states in a structure and be able to evaluate the internal and external forces and stresses acting on or within a range of structural elements (i.e. slabs, beams, columns, etc.).

2. Explain and apply advanced theories, principles and computational methods to the solving of complex structures (i.e. statically indeterminate structures, members in plastic state, etc.).

3. Explain the procedures required to prepare and test a range of structural members in elastic and plastic state to determine how the structure will behave when loads are applied under different conditions.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:

4. Apply mathematics science and engineering concepts and principles to the analyses of structures.

How will I be assessed?

a Marked assessments: you will be formally assessed by examination and coursework, which will be designed to enable you to demonstrate your abilities to satisfy the module's learning outcomes.

The coursework will be made up of one assignment and a laboratory work:
• The assignment is designed to allow you to demonstrate your competence in explaining engineering theories and principles for analysing structural elements. This will test MLO’s 1 & 2.

• The laboratory work is a group work designed to make sure that you can work together to apply theory to structural behaviours under elastic and plastic state and buckling. However, you will submit individual laboratory reports. This will test MLO’s 3.


The exam assessment will require you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of various theories and principles of analysing different type of structures that are statically indeterminate, under buckling and also that have reached a plastic state. This will test MLO’s 1 & 2.
Written feedback will be given on the marked assessments to help you to improve in your overall learning.

b. In order to support you in learning and preparing for the marked assessments as well as helping you to improve your overall learning skills you will receive guidance through questioning and discussion with the tutors during your classes. This will assist you in reflecting on what you are learning and in feeding forward to the assessments.

Module abstract

The fundamental principles of structural analysis and competences in applying such principles to determine the behaviour of the structures in both elastic and plastic state is a fundamental requirement of the construction engineer. It is needed to allow you to develop throughout the programme of study and to become a successful practitioner in industry. It is essential for employment and this module will give you the chance to demonstrate your achievements in this key area. Using the teaching you receive directly from your tutors in our laboratories and classrooms as well as their guidance you will become competent to seek out your own knowledge to enable you to perform to the best of your abilities.
