Marketing Internship Programme

Background to the programme

First developed in 2013 the specific purpose of the Marketing Internship Programme is to provide SME’s with the opportunity to secure first-hand marketing experience through working with some of the regions undergraduate students based at Newcastle Business School, AACSB, part of Northumbria University. The programme was developed by Dr Matt Sutherland who noticed a growing number of marketing students who were looking to complete a short internship around their studies within their final year. On average the internship runs between eight and ten weeks within Semester One of the academic year (Oct-Dec) with student’s working (unpaid) between three and four hours per week. To date, students have worked on projects in the areas of, namely, Digital Marketing, Marketing Planning and Research, Marketing Communications and Customer Relationship Management.

The SME’s

At this point in time, over 100 North East based SMEs are involved in the programme, based within the private and third sectors.

Strengths associated with the programme

  • The programme provides SMEs with skilled labour who can help support their existing or new marketing activity
  • Students can work on e.g. a new project that requires additional resource with a specific brief
  • There are no associated labour costs, the students work on a voluntary basis alongside their degree
  • SME’s have the opportunity to secure first-hand experience of working with current students before they graduate with the programme potentially acting as a vehicle for recruiting graduates
  • The internship is run in partnership with Newcastle Business School, AACSB and is part of Northumbria University. Newcastle Business School is ranked in the top 1% of Business Schools in the world.
  • The Small Business Charter, which brings leading Business Schools and SME communities across the UK together, has awarded Newcastle Business School, AACSB ‘The Small Business Charter Award’ in recognition of its active participation in supporting start-ups, students and small businesses
