If you already have an HND or foundation degree, this course will allow you to top it up to an honours degree with just one year of additional study. You’ll build on your all-round knowledge of business including organisational theory, business models, and factors that underpin a firm’s ability to deliver on the triple bottom line.

The course also includes specialist modules in marketing that cover topics like buyer behaviour, marketing communications, marketing management and marketing strategy. With a marketing specialism as part of your degree award, you’ll have an extra edge in employability.

Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and workshops. There is significant emphasis on independent learning as well as self-directed and group activities as this course is, in effect, the final year of a degree course.

The use of TEL enables us to ‘flip’ our classrooms where appropriate, so that contact time is focused on answering questions and applying what you have already learnt.

At Northumbria your learning will be directly impacted by the teaching team’s active research into their specialist subjects. In addition, as part of our strong research ethos, you’ll build up your own research skills as you formulate questions, critique different interpretations, and develop well-founded arguments.

During the ‘Contemporary Issues in Business’ module you will analyse research in a relevant topic such as digital marketing or branding. Your investigation will draw on relevant concepts and frameworks and will result in a critical synthesis of business practice and academic theory. Other modules also reflect a research-rich approach, which helps you become a more critical, reflective and independent thinker.

At the end of this course there are logical career paths into business, marketing, advertising and PR, both in the UK and around the world. You can also undertake further study at postgraduate level with a course such as our Digital Marketing MSc. If you decide to start up your own business, it’s good to know that the combined turnover of our graduates’ start-up companies is higher than that of any other UK university.

Who would this Course suit?

This course is for people who want to top up a Higher National Diploma to a full undergraduate degree in business, with specialist modules in marketing.

Entry Requirements 2019/20

Standard Entry

If you have taken a BTEC HND programme we will usually expect you to have performed to an average of merit standard.

If you have taken a Foundation Degree we will be looking for performance to commendation level or 60% average.

Academic Language Skills for Newcastle Business School (Optional, 0 Credits)

Academic skills when studying away from your home country can differ due to cultural and language differences in teaching and assessment practices. This module is designed to support your transition in the use and practice of technical language and subject specific skills around assessments and teaching provision in your chosen subject. The overall aim of this module is to develop your abilities to read and study effectively for academic purposes; to develop your skills in analysing and using source material in seminars and academic writing and to develop your use and application of language and communications skills to a higher level.

The topics you will cover on the module include:

• Understanding assignment briefs and exam questions.
• Developing academic writing skills, including citation, paraphrasing, and summarising.
• Practising ‘critical reading’ and ‘critical writing’
• Planning and structuring academic assignments (e.g. essays, reports and presentations).

Academic and Career Development (Core, 20 Credits)

You will learn advanced academic skills; such as how to use structured approaches to read, note-making, research and writing, transferable skills to ensure academic success in all your other academic modules and enabling you to conduct a critical literature review of employability, graduate marked place informed by career theory (see themes 1,2 and 3 below). Then using advanced research skills, theory and self-assessment tools you will learn how to and choose and apply for a relevant job role and career path, in turn enhancing your employability and transferable academic skills (themes 4 and 5). Finally, you will conclude the module by designing a complete set of graduate application tools for the job role and career chosen and will experience a no of recruitment exercises such as interviews, group exercises and self-branding and presentation to further develop your employability, academic performance and career management skills. The module will be concluded with a theoretical session and a number of practical exercises designed to develop your self-confidence and employability (theme 6).

Contemporary Marketing Strategy (Core, 20 Credits)

This module will extend your knowledge and understanding of marketing acquired from your previous studies into the marketing strategy area (approach and application). You will learn to apply the principles and techniques of marketing strategy across a wide range of goods and services in different markets. You will learn to use models which help marketing managers to make more informed decisions (e.g. new product development, brand repositioning, deletion, sales force management and communication techniques). You will undertake analysis of complex situations via the use of case studies and learn how to present solutions through group discussions. The ability to think strategically will be expressed in the production of marketing plans.
Within this module, you will cover three main areas associated with contemporary marketing strategy:

1) Designing appropriate marketing strategies:

• Assessing internal and external environments
• Strategic marketing decisions: choices and mistakes
• New product development
• Branding strategies
• Relational and sustainability strategies

2) Implementation of strategies:

Buyer Behaviour and Integrated Marketing Communications (Core, 20 Credits)

This module brings together two important and closely related areas of study for marketing and business students, namely understanding how buyers behave and make decisions, and how to use this knowledge to effectively communicate with selected target markets.
The study of theoretical frameworks underpins the module, which is then applied to a variety of buyer and business contexts. Lectures are used to impart the theory and the seminars are a mix of practical and case study applications and academic material designed to encourage application of theory and critical thinking. The assessment provides you with the opportunity to utilise the theoretical frameworks in a hypothetical business scenario of your choice.

The module aims to:

• Introduce you to the related concepts of buyer behaviour and marketing communications. The structure of the module will first allow you to appreciate the value of analysing consumer behaviour and then use this information to develop appropriate and informed marketing communications campaigns.

• The teaching, learning and assessment strategies employed (largely focusing on a case study approach) encourage you to think critically and apply the knowledge gained into practical business scenarios.

Digital and Data Driven Marketing (Core, 20 Credits)

This module is designed to develop your skills in understanding how one-to-one forms of marketing communications, across offline and online channels, can be combined into an overall campaign with the ability to generate new customers and enhance existing relationships. To do this, the module is broken into three distinct themes:

Theme One - Principles of Direct and Digital Marketing: In this part of the module you will cover the fundamental practices in the direct marketing field, which will include acquisition and retention strategies, customer profiling and segmentation, database marketing, permission marketing and personalisation, relevant legislation and marketing metrics.

Theme Two - Digital Media: In this section you will explore the range of communications media available, ranging from traditional offline channels (such as direct mail and telemarketing) through to the ever-growing range of digital media options (including social media, email, web design and mobile commerce).

Theme Three - Campaign Planning: Here you will be introduced to the principles of campaign design, from initial context analysis and goal setting through to campaign implementation and evaluation. You will be encouraged to combine different marketing communications tools as part of an integrated campaign.

Contemporary Issues in Business (Core, 20 Credits)

On this module, you will learn about critical thinking and reflection, and doing so, you will develop the necessary critical skills to perform both of these effectively as a learner in higher education. You will learn about the necessary academic skills required to undertake a critical review of existing literature on a contemporary issue within the business and management disciplines. On completing this, you will be able to a critical literature review on a subject appropriate to your degree programme.

Here, you will be introduced to the module, before identifying how to select a contemporary issue within business and management. You will learn about the development of critical thinking and what is meant by a literature review as well as the importance of being able to write a literature review.

You will learn how to get started in this development; by searching for sources and developing essential research skills including reviewing literature and critical evaluation, before going onto develop you own critical literature review which represents the module assessment.

Supporting Study (Core, 0 Credits)

This is a non-credit bearing module, and forms an extension to the 120 module credit points on your top-up programme. The module is designed to provide greater understanding of academic expectations for your direct entry into the final year and support you in the transition process of learning experience.

The aim of the module is to facilitate the development of your independent learning over the one-year course. Induction and on-going personal support activities are to be phased in line with the academic development and the need to support the delivery of programme modules.

In personal support, you will cover:
• The key support and points of contact available to you within the institution
• Societies and social wellbeing
• Library resources and academic skills
• ARTA regulation
• Teamwork protocol
• Use LinkedIn to network

In academic development, you will cover:
• Emailing tutors

On completion of this module, you should be able to complete the process of transition directly to the final year. This will include your personal and academic development activities. You will also be able to seek learning resources and study support, including academic and social integration.

Strategic Management and Corporate Responsibility (Core, 20 Credits)

You will learn how organisations can compete successfully in economic terms while managing their corporate, social and environmental responsibility. At the end of the module you will learn to critically evaluate the factors which underpin an organisation’s success (or otherwise) in managing the triple bottom line and will have learned how to use appropriate frameworks to analyse research material and draw useful conclusions.
