A good GCSE profile is expected including Maths and English Language at minimum grade C or equivalent.  If you have studied for a new GCSE for which you will be awarded a numerical grade then you will need to achieve a minimum grade 4.

Academic Language Skills for Sport Exercise and Rehabilitation (Optional, 0 Credits)

Academic skills when studying away from your home country can differ due to cultural and language differences in teaching and assessment practices. This module is designed to support your transition in the use and practice of technical language and subject specific skills around assessments and teaching provision in your chosen subject. The overall aim of this module is to develop your abilities to read and study effectively for academic purposes; to develop your skills in analysing and using source material in seminars and academic writing and to develop your use and application of language and communications skills to a higher level.

The topics you will cover on the module include:

• Understanding assignment briefs and exam questions.
• Developing academic writing skills, including citation, paraphrasing, and summarising.
• Practising ‘critical reading’ and ‘critical writing’
• Planning and structuring academic assignments (e.g. essays, reports and presentations).
• Avoiding academic misconduct and gaining credit by using academic sources and referencing effectively.

Fundamentals of Anatomy and Biomechanics (Core, 20 Credits)

You will gain a thorough practical grounding in the fundamentals of musculo-skeletal anatomy, and methods of assessment and measurement, underpinning movement analysis and biomechanics. Through this, you will learn about the role of biomechanics in analysing and understanding human movement in the context of sport and health. You will be able to explore the principles of assessment of normal movement patterns and actions, and gain practical experience in methods of kinetic and kinematic measurement and analysis commonly employed in sport and clinical biomechanics, performance analysis, and strength and conditioning.
By the end of the module you will have been given the opportunity to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to:
1. Explain the basic structure and function of the musculo-skeletal system, and identify key surface anatomical landmarks.
2. Demonstrate an awareness of role of biomechanics, and of how measurement methods can be applied in both sporting and health applications.
3. Demonstrate a sound understanding of fundamental kinematic and kinetic mechanical principles, and apply these to the analysis of movement.
4. Demonstrate professional practice and ethical awareness in human movement assessment.

Fundamentals of Human Physiology (Core, 20 Credits)

This module will provide you with the foundation knowledge required for later modules on energetics and exercise physiology. In this module you will learn about the structure and way in which the different physiological systems of the body work. In addition, you will learn about how these systems are controlled both at rest and during exercise. The control of these systems is important for later modules which examine the limits to how the body works which could be during disease as well as exercise. The major physiological systems to be examined will be the cardiovascular, respiratory, bioenergetic, muscular and nervous systems.

On this module you will acquire the underpinning knowledge and understanding of fundamental psychological principles and theories. You will be introduced to key concepts and approaches in psychology that have relevance to sport, exercise and health contexts. You will compare, contrast and integrate a range of different psychological perspectives that can be used to understand and explain human behaviour. You will have the opportunity to study the biological basis of behaviour, learn about how humans think perceive and remember, understand the cognitive processes instrumental in motor development, gain an insight into the nature of social interaction and group processes and study individual differences in personality and behaviour.

You will learn a systematic process of answering questions about sport and exercise science and the value of this process in the study of sport and exercise science.You will learn how to identify, justify and pursue a proposed question / problem within the sport and exercise science sub disciplines. You will also learn basic techniques of collecting and handling / analysing data produced from experiments in sport and exercise science.

On this academic support module you will develop an understanding of the key skills required for successful completion of your degree in sport and exercise sciences. You will achieve this through a variety of assessments including written work, presentations and practical demonstrations. The module aims to develop your understanding of generic transferable skills, as well as allowing you to gain experience of working safely in a sport and exercise science laboratory environment.

Introduction to Sports Coaching (Core, 20 Credits)

This module aims to help you develop an understanding of the fundamental skills of effective coaching and their relavance within the coaching process. In doing so you will gain an understanding of the UK coaching industry and investigate the importance of the roles of an effective coach, characteristics of leadership, and the fundamental key practice and coaching skills of effective coaching. These will be underpinned by current theories and models associated with effective coaching. The module will address the differences in practice and examine participation and performance coaching. You will be given an opportunity to gain practical coaching experience and observe coaches in action within this module.

Biomechanics Assessment in Sport Exercise and Health (Optional, 20 Credits)

The aim of the first part of this module is to enable you to further develop the practical and theoretical skills you learned in previous modules. You will be introduced to 2D and 3D motion analysis and will explore kinematic and kinetic data collection and analysis. You will assess the biomechanical factors that contribute to performance and profiling and discuss, and evaluate, the use of motion analysis for the assessment of human movement in sport, health and exercise.

In the second part of the module, you will explore a range of methods of assessment for assessing both clinical and healthy populations. In particular you will discuss and evaluate the use of appropriate methods for assessment of muscular performance and then evaluate the methods used for clinical gait and postural control analysis. You will develop your practical skills and learn to use advanced kinematic and kinetic analysis protocols.

In addition, this module aims to develop your appreciation of scientific rigour and evaluate the limitations of the data when using a range of biomechanical assessment tools, and appreciate the need for reliability and validity in data collection.

You will cover a range of topics from the following:
- 2D video data collection and analysis using Vicon Motus.
- 3D motion analysis (Vicon)
- Projectiles
- Force
- Surface electromyography
- Clinical gait analysis
- Clinical postural control data collection and analysis.

Introduction to Performance Analysis (Optional, 20 Credits)

You will learn about the background to performance analysis in sport. The history of the development of technology and methods of collecting performance analysis data will be covered. Where the discipline fits into the other sport science fields will be explained and how the data can be used for multiple audiences will be shown. The important relationship between the performance analyst and coach will be highlighted and examples used from a range of sports to cement this understanding will used. Factors to remember when collecting, analysing and feeding back analysed information will be outlined and essential processes during the data analysis stage, such as; validity and reliability will be covered. You will learn what it is like to work in the applied performance analysis field with guest lectures from local performance analysts at professional clubs. You will be able to, by the end of the module, understand how to collect, analyse and present objective, reliable performance analysis data which the coach and players can use to infer about their performance and make improvements for future performances.

Physiological assessment in sport, exercise and health (Optional, 20 Credits)

This module covers the main principles that underlie many of the current practices of measurement in the discipline of sport and exercise physiology. The underpinning physiological principles associated with various exercise testing procedures will be critically analysed and discussed. You will be expected to develop the skills and competencies that will enable you to select and administer a range of physiological tests. By the end of the module successful students will be capable of running a wide variety of physiological assessments ranging from working with clinical populations with limited exercise capability through to elite athletes and sportspersons.

At the end of the module successful students should be able to:
1. Discuss and evaluate the physiological basis underpinning a variety of physiological assessment tools;
2. Identify the limitations of a variety of physiological tests;
3. Analyse and interpret the data from a range of exercise physiology tests;
4. Perform a range of physiological testing procedures.

Psychological Determinants in Sport, Exercise and Health (Optional, 20 Credits)

This module is designed to emphasise and evaluate the main theoretical principles that explain the key psychological determinants of behaviour in sport, exercise and health settings. You will learn about the key topics and contemporary research areas within sport, exercise and health psychology settings. You will develop the necessary analytical skills needed to make decisions with regards to the selection, justification and evaluation of key psychological factors that impact upon behaviour.

Research Design and Analysis (Core, 20 Credits)

The module aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills for planning and carrying out an independent research project in sport and exercise science. The module will be structured in two blocks. Block one (weeks 1-6) will address different types of research design, their strengths and weaknesses and the associated analyses appropriate to those designs. Workshop sessions will cover how to carry out data analysis techniques in specialist software and how to present the results of these analyses according to convention. The topics that you will cover will include:
- Statistical assumptions and transforming data
- Correlation, regression, and multiple regression
- Between-group differences
- Power and sample size estimation
- Within-group differences
- Factorial designs
- Qualitative techniques
- Validity and reproducibility

Block two of the module (weeks 8-12) will be given to the design and completion of student-led, small-group research projects addressing given questions. In this block you will experience the research process first hand and undertake the design, conduct, analysis, and presentation of your research in the form of an individually-produced experimental report. This will include:

Identifying the rationale for your given research question from academic literature
- Choosing and describing an appropriate design for the research question
- Correctly applying and interpreting data analysis appropriate to the reseach question
- Presenting research-related activity in accordance with accepted convention
- Understanding ethical issues that apply to your research in sport and exercise sciences

In addition, the module aims to develop your appreciation of scientific rigour whilst considering and evaluating the limitations of data collection and data analysis methods.

Coaching Skills and Practice (Core, 20 Credits)

Coaching Skills and Practice’ (SP0500) builds upon that introduced in SP0400 - practice skills, practice behaviours - to consider why these are important to the coaching process and how these practices and behaviours can be used to create progressive and transferable outcomes in a series of coaching sessions. This module aims to introduce the concepts of how to create an engaging and positive motivational climate (eg. self-determination, achievement goals) which influences athletes’ behaviours, engagement, and well-being in sport. Furthermore, you will also develop awareness of how a theoretical understanding of motor skills acquisition can be applied to the coaching process which includes previous and current theroies of motor skill acquisition (eg. information processing, dynamical systems).

Contemporary Issues in PE and School Sport (PESS) (Core, 20 Credits)

The module is designed to provide students with an insight into a range of contemporary UK education, and Physical Education (PE) specific policies, strategies and initiatives published by professional bodies and government departments. More broadly, students will critically discuss and analyse a range of contemporary strategies impacting on PESS. Most notably, these include the PE and Sport Premium and the New National Curriculum for PE (NCPE). Particular attention will be directed to the statutory programmes of study and attainment targets for PE at Key Stages 1 to 4 enshrined in the new NCPE, and the impact that the PE and Sport Premium has had on the delivery of primary school PE. Linked to the PE and Sport Premium, students will develop awareness of the shifting role of the PE teacher and sports coach as well as other contemporary issues such as obesity, intensity training and inclusion.

Principles of Strength and Conditioning (Optional, 20 Credits)

This module will introduce you to the discipline of Strength & Conditioning, and the requirements of a career as a strength & conditioning coach. You will learn about the role of a strength & conditioning coach and the development of the discipline and it’s place within the sport science support services in the UK. You will study the physiological and biomechanical underpinnings to a range of training modalities in strength & conditioning, and identify, analyse and coach the key technical aspects of these modalities, with the ultimate aim of enhancing performance in sport.

Human Movement Science (Optional, 20 Credits)

The aim of the module is to enable you to further develop the practical and theoretical skills you learned in previous modules. You will be introduced to advanced kinematic and kinetic data collection and analysis techniques, and to potential applications relevant to current research initiatives in sport and clinical biomechanics.
In the second part of the module, you will explore advanced techniques used in clinical biomechanics. You will develop your practical skills and learn to use clinical normative profiling techniques. You will design your own projects and learn to independently collect, and critically appraise your data, and report your findings.
In addition, this module aims to develop your appreciation of scientific rigour in experimental design and testing, and to give you an understanding of how to control and measure potential sources of error, reliability and validity.

You will cover a range of topics from the following:
- Revision of fundamental principles of theoretical biomechanics applied to specific sporting skills.
- Advanced motion analysis
- Clinical gait analysis
- Clinical postural control
- Accelerometry
- disability biomechanical applications
- Inverse dynamics and modelling techniques
- Current methods of kinetic analysis and muscle activity assessment, including advanced electromyography and ultrasound
- The design of testing programmes and scientific rigour.
- Critical evaluation of limitations, validity and reliability
- Data stability, and the theoretical and practical aspects of potential sources of error: how these are identified, measured, and their effects estimated statistically.

Sport and Exercise Placement (Core, 20 Credits)

You will be required to complete a minimum of 70 hours voluntary placement at a sports related organisation. You will be required to liaise with a host at the organisation to agree on a job role and plan your placement content and hours. You will learn how to work in a professional manner in a real world environment. You will learn how to put into practice the theory and concepts that you have learnt in the classroom. You will learn and gain experience of working in a sporting environment in a career path which you find engaging and stimulating. Key employability skills will be discussed and the process of applying for a graduate job, attending a job interview and reflecting on your own performance will all be covered. The importance of the careers service will be highlighted and the emphasis will be on student-led learning and organisation during the placement process.

Paediatric Sport and Exercise Science (Optional, 20 Credits)

Building upon your underpinning knowledge of human physiology, fundamentals of psychology and physiological assessment in sport, exercise and health, you will start to apply this to the field of paediatric sport and exercise science. You will learn about the psychological and physiological issues associated with maturation and physiological fitness testing in the exercising child and adolescent. The psychological determinants of child and adolescent sport and physical activity participation will also be examined. Furthermore, you will explore multi-disciplinary approaches to develop an intervention strategy that addresses a contemporary issue within a paediatric population.

Physiological basis of training and performance (Optional, 20 Credits)

This module covers the prescription of exercise to improve sport specific fitness and sporting performance. The focus of this module is on evidence based practice. Throughout the module you will investigate the most appropriate method(s) of training to enhance a range of components of fitness. To do this, you will be required to gather and evaluate the scientific literature that exists for different components of fitness. Furthermore, you will be required to explained the physiological adaptations that arise from different training methods and the causal mechanism improving performance arising from the identified adaptations. In addition to the critical understanding of physiological adaptations, you will examine the principles of training programme design and factors that influence training programmes.

Psychological Skills Training (Optional, 20 Credits)

On this module you will learn about and get to experience what a sport psychologist does when working with athletes. You will explore the different ways in which a sport psychologist can work with athletes, and will begin to create your own personal approach to sport psychology practice. You will be exposed to the range of different issues that a sport psychologist might encounter from performance enhancement through performance dysfunction, performance impairment and performance termination, and will learn about how a sport psychologist deals with these issues. You will find out what athletes really think of sport psychology, and how sport psychologists can use this information to make their work with athletes more effective. You will get to try out and critique a range of psychological techniques for performance enhancement including goal-setting, imagery, self-talk and progressive muscular relaxation. You will learn how to design mental training programmes for individuals and groups, and how to convince a National Governing body, Sport institute or professional sports club of the value of sports psychology services for their athletes.

You will develop a critical and in-depth knowledge of a specific area of interest to you in sport and exercise science. You will use the knowledge and skills developed by the two prerequisite modules in sport and exercise science (Methods of Enquiry in Sport and Exercise Science and Research Design and Analysis) or the prerequisite module in Sport and Exercise Nutrition (Research Methods) to inform your independent piece of individual research.

Sports and exercise medicine, injury and rehabilitation (Optional, 40 Credits)

This module aims to enable you to develop a critical in-depth understanding of the interdisciplinary nature, and key professional responsibilities, of the sport and exercise scientist as part of a rehabilitation team, working with diverse clinical groups and clients from multi-cultural and ethnically diverse backgrounds. You will be introduced to the specific needs of athletes and will be given the background knowledge to be able to advise them on prevention and rehabilitation strategies, based on critical evaluation of current evidence, in order to facilitate their continued participation in their chosen sport, exercise or activity.
You will be given the opportunity to develop a critical understanding of acute and chronic musculo-skeletal, and inflammatory, conditions in specific groups of athletes and to devise evidence-based rehabilitation strategies. You will also learn to critically evaluate and apply knowledge of the psychological, and physiological, aspects of injury, and recovery, when developing a rehabilitation or exercise programme for an injured performer,
In the first semester you will learn about the theory and practical application of legal, clinical, biomechanical, psychological and physiological aspects of injury and rehabilitation.
In semester two the module enables you to develop specialist knowledge in a particular aspect of sport and exercise medicine that is of interest to you. You will achieve this by producing educational material for high-level practitioners based on a critical evaluation of current evidence. Here you will be able to demonstrate your ability to independently collect, analyse, synthesise and communicate information to a professional audience of your choice.

Talent ID and High Performance Coaching (Core, 20 Credits)

This module is designed for students to critically analyse the skills required to coach and nurture athletic talent at a high performance level. The module will further explore and critique contemporary long term athlete models, talent Identification and development pathways and their impact on performance, long term participation and well being. Students will have the opportunity to generate, direct and manage the implementation of cutting-edge research informed coaching solutions and practice. The module will also critically examine what is meant by the terms talent and high performance coaching, identify the skills and competencies needed to coach in a high performance setting , investigate the problems a high performance coach may encounter and provide potential solutions to maximise effective coaching practice.

Coaching Concepts and Behaviour (Core, 20 Credits)

Coaching Concepts and Behaviour builds upon knowledge introduced at Level 4 (i.e., SP0400) and Level 5 (i.e., SP0500) including key coaching skills (e.g., planning, risk assessment), coaching practice behaviours (e.g., questioning, instruction) and athlete outcomes (e.g., wellbeing, skill learning). You will learn to critically appreciate how these skills, practices and outcomes are influenced by the interrelationship of personal, social and contextual factors within the holistic coaching process. In addition, you will learn how to plan, deliver and critically review coaching practice using a range of assessment tools in line with current research findings and UKCC Level 2/3 coaching award criteria.
