Programme Information

In collaboration with a number of health care providers, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences is pleased to offer professionals who have had a break in service the opportunity to undertake a Return to Professional Practice in Health Course in order to enable them to re-register with the NMC and HCPC.

Course Information

The programme is currently under re-development in line with national guidelines. It is anticipated that the new programme, which will be open to Allied Health Professionals, Nurses and Midwives will commence in September 2015. Completion of the programme will also be of value to those wishing to return to Health Visiting practice, as the programme competencies will be mapped to those required for this specialist area of practice.

This programme will attract academic accreditation of 30 points at level 6 (Degree), and applicants will be required to demonstrate successful study at level 5 (Diploma level) prior to application. Attendance at the University will be for 1 day a week from 9.30 am - 5.00 pm. Students will also be required to undertake a minimum of 100 hours in clinical practice (consisting of no less than two days a week in clinical practice to ensure continuity of care provision).  The number of hours for midwives will be negotiated on an individual basis for midwives by the Supervisor of Midwives and Lead for Midwifery Education. Successful applicants will be invited for interview.

Practice Placements

Students will be allocated to practice placements appropriate to the part of the NMC Professional Register on which their name appears or to which they require access.

Supervision

In conjunction with their mentor, each student will devise an individualised action plan in order to plan how they will achieve the required learning outcomes. In this way the individual needs of each student can be met. The action plan is designed to help them to practice and to develop competence within the specialised area of practice to which they have been allocated. Supervision and assessment of clinical competencies is carried out by practice mentors.

Assessment

There will be a summative assessment which will include both written work and successful achievement of the practice competencies.

In order to successfully complete the programme students must achieve a minimum grade of 40% for this assessment.
