Dr Vikki Smith

Senior Lecturer

Vikki Smith is a Senior Lecturer and has a joint role as a Clinical Academic Midwife Sonographer at Northumbria University and The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. She is an NIHR 70@70 Nurse and Midwife Research Leader and an NIHR Midwifery Advocate. Vikki’s research interests include maternity care with a specific focus on antenatal ultrasound, the use of technology in maternity services and the organisation of maternity care provision. Vikki leads a regional ultrasound clinic for women with abnormally invasive placenta and is the research ethics co-ordinator for UGT/ PGT for the Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Health.

Vikki has expertise in mixed methodologies including randomised controlled trials and thematic framework analysis. She has a growing profile related to peer review publications and research related income. Vikki is currently collaborating with colleagues in North India to improve health outcomes for women and children in rural villages and is working in partnership with UK and India based charities. Vikki has a particular interest in the development of NMAHP clinical academic careers and is enthusiastic about supporting NMAHPs to undertake clinically relevant research.

Vikki particularly welcomes enquires regarding potential PhD supervision and PhD external examiner roles related to maternity care.
