Dr Karim Sorour

Associate Professor

Department: Newcastle Business School

Karim teaches corporate governance, management accounting and research methodology and led corporate governance/ social responsibility modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has successfully supervised doctorate students till completion and is currently supervising PhD/ DBA students in the areas of corporate governance and social responsibility.

Prior to joining Newcastle Business School, Karim had an extensive research & consultancy experience, having worked as a senior consultant and researcher at the Research and Consultation Centre of the Arab Academy for Science & Technology, Egypt for over 13 years. During his work there he participated and led many International consultancy and contract research projects (with track record of more than 30 research & consultancy projects undertaken in 7 countries). He had a track record of designing and implementation of numerous financial and governance short courses in a number of countries in the Middle East.

Karim is an internationally recognised expert on corporate governance and social responsibility of banks and sea-ports. His research work and expertise underpins Corporate Governance reform efforts in major companies in Egypt.  His work has appeared in international journals such as Business and Society, Journal of Business Ethics, qualitative research Journal, Investment Management and Financial Innovation, International Journal of Doctoral Studies, Capital and Class Journal, Interdisciplinary Journal of Economics and Business and Corporate Ownership and Control. He is an editor of COGENT Business and Management Journal (Taylors and Francis) and an editorial board member of Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences (Emerald).

Karim is actively involved in peer reviewing for many reputable journals in areas of Corporate Governance, Accounting & Research Methods/ Methodology. He is a member of the Risk, Responsibility, Ethics and Governance research Interest group at Newcastle business school, a certified member of the Institute of Management Accountants (USA) and the British Accounting & Finance Association (BAFA). Karim is also an elected executive committee member of the BAFA- Accounting & Finance in Emerging Economies (AFEE) research interest group with responsibility of organising the groups’ academic workshops.
