Dr Pushkar Jha

Associate Professor

Department: Newcastle Business School

Pushkar Jha is a Reader and Faculty Director of Post Graduate Research, seeking to support the momentum of the Faculty and NBS’s growth as a research-oriented school. He has been pro-active in all around development of the school with roles such as the director of learning and teaching (EIS), research and innovation champion, subject group leader and has also been involved in redesign of UG and PG programmes.

His research spans areas of strategic learning, innovation, sustainable development, employee ownership and management of projects. With a PhD from  Cass Business School in 2007, he has since published in Research Policy, Academy of Management Perspectives, World Development Perspectives and in International Journal of Project Management, among others. In August 2013, his co-authored paper in the Academy of Management Perspectives was recognized at the highest platform in the field, winning the best published paper award at the 2013 annual meeting of the Academy of Management. He has also received the CMI award for the 2nd best paper of five winning articles, conferred in 2014. CMI is the only chartered professional body in the UK that promotes standards in management and leadership excellence.

His co-authored research pieces for department of Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and for John Lewis Partnerships, have been widely recognized as the drivers behind UK national government policy to promote employee owned businesses, launched formally on 4th of July, 2013. His portfolio of prior business engagement and policy influencing research includes studies for the International Chambers of Commerce and EMI.

Pushkar remains keen to expand his engagement with sustainability initiatives and research that can inform and orient policy in practice in this direction. He has coordinated, designed and delivered project studies for such initiatives of the World Bank and the UNFPA in the past and continues to deploy this domain in informing his research work. With five doctoral completions, four as principal supervisor, he is actively seeking suitable candidates on projects that  bring together innovation, strategy and sustainable development.

Launched at the House of Commons, policy symposium and quoted by the Deputy PM in EO policy launch – fundamental basis for the Nutall Review that saw the UK government pump over £150m in promoting Employee Ownership, and deliver a policy shift of tax relief and process simplification for transforming to EO form of business.
