Emeritus Professor Bob Giddings

Bob is Professor of Architecture and Urban Design. He studied Architecture at Newcastle University winning two prizes in design competitions and was awarded a doctorate in Architecture and Urban Design from the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies at the University of York. Before university, Bob was employed as a Building Technologist in London and has since worked with award-winning architectural practices. He enjoyed five years as an associate tutor at Newcastle University School of Architecture before joining the School of the Built Environment. He has pioneered the development of three innovative degree courses - the Building Management Programme (now Construction Management) Architectural Design and Management (now Architecture) and Interior Design (now Interior Architecture).

Bob has supervised 20 PhD candidates to completion. His own research in Architectural Design Methodology and Urban Design has produced numerous international conference papers, a number of academic journal papers, and a book with Margaret Horne on architectural representation, titled Artists’ Impressions in Architectural Design. He has been lead examiner with the Architects Registration Board, member of the RIBA Validation Panel, and was on the CIOB Presidential Commission on the Future of Education for the Construction Industry. He has been subject specialist reviewer for Architecture, Building and Surveying with the Quality Assurance Agency, member of judging panels for the CIOB International Research and Innovation Awards, and mentor to the national scholars. He was a member of the international jury for a sustainable city centre design competition in the former Yugoslavia, and one of the founders of Northumbria University's Sustainable Cities Research Institute. He is Visiting Professor at Belgrade University Faculty of Architecture, and at the American University School of Architecture in Skopje.
