Prof Bob Giddings

His interest in the integration of design and management led to a Postgraduate Diploma in Management and membership of the Chartered Institute of Building. A Master of Arts in Urban Studies was followed by a Doctorate in Architecture and Urban Design from the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies at the University of York. Before university, Bob was employed as a Building Technologist in London but has since worked with a number of award-winning architectural practices. He enjoyed five years as a part-time tutor at Newcastle School of Architecture before joining the School of the Built Environment. He has pioneered three innovative degree courses, including Architectural Design and Management, and continues to teach design to a variety of student groups.

Bob was School Research Director for ten years, supervises and examines PhD candidates. His own research in Architecture and Urban Design has produced conference papers in Hong Kong, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Athens, Cape Town, Delft, Pretoria, Tel-Aviv, Venice, Vienna, and work with universities in Australia and Hong Kong; as well as international conference papers for universities in this country including: Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Oxford, Salford, and Sheffield. He has published a number of academic journal papers, and book chapters, as well as a book with Margaret Horne on architectural representation, titled Artists’ Impressions in Architectural Design. He is a lead examiner for the Architects Registration Board and member of the judging panel for the CIOB International Research and Innovation Awards. He has been a member of the RIBA Visiting Board Panel; subject specialist reviewer for Architecture, Building and Surveying with the Quality Assurance Agency; a member of an International Jury for a city centre design competition in the former Yugoslavia; on the Advisory Panel of Experts for the International Design and Environment Research Network; and he was one of the founders of Northumbria University's Sustainable Cities Research Institute.
