Michelle Booth


Department: Newcastle Business School

Michelle joined the university in 2017 as an Associate Lecturer, moving to a part-time Lecturer position in 2019.  With a background in both the public sector and social economy, Michelle specialises in social enterprise and social entrepreneurship, building on a twenty-plus years career in the field.  Previous to joining the university, Michelle led on the social enterprise agenda at Gateshead Council, leading the borough to secure Social Enterprise Places status from Social Enterprise UK. 

Michelle is pursuing PhD research in the field of place-based social enterprise ecosystems, with a keen interest in social capital creation in communities. She is also involved in CERN an early career researcher network specialising in co-operative and social enterprise based in Manchester. 

Outside of the university, Michelle is the founder-director of Captivate Enterprise, a specialist social economy consultancy working predominately in the north-east and north-west regions.  She is also a director a number of social enterprises including Side by Side Arts CIC and Flourish Together CIC.  In 2018 she was recognised as one of 100 leading women in social enterprise with a WiSE100 award. 

Extending her interest in ecosystem creation and development Michelle is working with the North East Business and Innovation Centre to establish the Innovate for Good Incubator for social innovation.
