Rebecca Thomson

About the Artist

Rebecca Thomson completed a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Kingston University.

She then went on to complete a BA Fine Art Sculpture (Hons) at the Glasgow School of Art, graduating this year. Thomson has exhibited in various exhibitions in Glasgow and will also be in the upcoming RSA’s New Contemporaries exhibition in Edinburgh.

About her work

Pure Honey is part of a series titled Receipt Poetry, where Rebecca embarks on specifically curated shopping trips, the transactions of which are subsequently written and printed out as poetry on a receipt.  These, existing in both their original paper and then sculptural, textile-based form, reflect the artist’s aim to, ‘romanticise overlooked relics from everyday life into works of “fine art.”’

Within this work there is space for discussion about the confessional nature of art and poetry, as well as the role of subjectivity and intimacy in an artist’s practice.Pure Honey utilises the material currency of velvet, it’s tactile nature enriching the intimately-charged text. This choice of fabric, with it’s capability to interact with light, invites the viewer to consider Pure Honey not as just a large-scale version of a normal object but a sculpture in it’s own right.
