Funding success for Newcastle Business School academic

A Northumbria University academic is one of this year’s recipients of the prestigious British Academy of Management (BAM) 2019 Grant Schemes.

Dr. Kate Black, working with her co-researcher Dr. Russell Warhurst, both from Newcastle Business School at Northumbria, have won significant grant funding for their research project: Inter-generational knowledge creation, curation and circulation. Starting from the assumption that knowledge is the life-blood of developed economies, Drs. Black and Warhurst’s research explores the management challenges of both creating knowledge and then sharing it across increasingly age-diverse workforces.

BAM is a recognised authority on the academic field of management in the UK, supporting and representing scholars and engaging with international peers. Its grant schemes are part of the Academy’s mission to build a thriving, pluralistic research community by supporting relevant, ethical and innovative management and business research. This year just 13 research grants were awarded across the UK.

Dr Black said: “To be named as one of the award winners by BAM is significant and highly rewarding. Our research seeks to examine how knowledge is created, circulated and curated between generations within knowledge-intensive organisations.  With the extension of working lives, organisations are increasingly age diverse and established research points to intergenerational power dynamics and barriers that potentially prevent the optimal creation and exchange of organisational knowledge.  However, research has yet to examine knowledge creation or circulation between generations.”

Professor John Wilson, Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Business and Law at Northumbria, added: “Securing this funding from BAM is richly deserved and I am delighted for Dr Black. It is also a recognition of the quality and depth of business management research and teaching at Newcastle Business School.”

The 2019 round of the British Academy of Management Grants Scheme included the inaugural BAM-ANZAM Collaborative Research Award, offered jointly with the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM) to support and advance international research collaborations between management researchers in Australia, New Zealand and UK.
