Career Path: Staff Nurse, Northumbria Foundation Health Care Trust

I qualified as a Learning Disabilities Nurse in September 2018 and took a different path than expected. I work on an Orthopaedic Trauma ward as a staff Nurse and love it.

I have enjoyed learning dressing and wound care all of which we didn’t learn as LD nurses.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

Northumbria has a good reputation for nurse training. It is also convenient for me as I love locally and have a young family.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

I enjoyed the placements. I’m not really an academic person but I enjoyed learning at Northumbria.

How connected was your course with industry?

Nursing is very well connected. You are assigned a base trust and there is support from practice placement facilitators who work within the trust you are placed in.

If you took on a placement during your course how did you feel this helped you in your career/ with your studies?

Absolutely. Hands on is the only way to learn to be a nurse.

What was the best thing about your course?

Graduating with a 2:1.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

By gaining my qualification.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

Meeting friends for life.

What advice would you give somebody who is considering studying at Northumbria?

Enjoy your time. Make the most of opportunities given.
