Career Path: Global Head of Design, Nutrition Category, GSK
Location:

I grew up in Manchester in the 90's, which was a pretty interesting place to be at the time. I knew from a very early age that I wanted to be a 'designer', though it took me a few years to work out what sort of design I really liked.

What are you doing now?

Global Head of Design, Nutrition Category, GSK. Design for GSK is a little different to that in other FMCG companies, my team lead all the 2D, 3D and POSM design for each of our trademarks. Essentially we operate as an internal design agency with full ownership of the brand assets and how they appear to our consumers. The fact that we run all these disciplines together, ensures that our design are fully thought through from each aspect, not just relying on brand graphics to do it all.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals / give your career an edge?

The DFI course is one that made you think, not just about how to do the job and become a decent operator, but also how to make design a bigger part of the conversation of how product innovation is delivered, how to lead both team and the conversations about what design can offer.

What was the best thing about your course?

Collegiality... The course is pretty much all about those around you. The class of 2001 were a vintage, bursting with talent, but then maybe every year would say that...

Who inspired you the most, and why?

No one person. It was really all about the alumni. Seeing a fellow student do something that rocks, inspires you to go that extra step, as you all push you all improve.

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now/throughout your career?

The ability to think a little bit different to other folk.

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying at Northumbria?

Get involved with stuff, definitely don't life at home, push yourself.

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in 3 words?

timeless, defining, energetic
