Leadership and Human Resource Management

The Leadership and Human Resource Management (LHRM) department encompasses our leadership, human resource management and public management degrees and apprenticeships.

Our programmes are underpinned by world-leading research and are professionally recognised by the Chartered Institute for Personnel Development (CIPD), Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and other professional bodies.

As a department we research a wide range of areas, including Public Policy and Public Management and in Leadership and Organisational Change.

Overview of Department

The LHRM department consists of over 60 academic staff who teach on the extensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees offered by NBS. Our programmes are underpinned by world-leading research and are professionally recognised by the Chartered Institute for Personnel Development (CIPD), Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and other professional bodies.

Our research covers a wide range of areas principally in Public Policy and Public Management and in Leadership and Organisational Change. The vast majority of our academic staff are research active and across Newcastle Business School 40% of publication outputs are internationally excellent or world leading (3* or above). Our research is organised within a number of research interest groups including “Risk, Responsibility Ethics and Governance”, “Global Entrepreneurial Talent Management” and “Public Policy and Public Management (3PM)”.

Our research contributes to the regional development agenda through developments in public management, leadership and ’localism’ in the public sector; public participation and policy and sustainable regional development. The focus of our research is practical and applied, and aims to add value to our organisational partners. Our client-centred approach enables us to solve real organisational problems with the aim to improve organisational effectiveness.

Knowledge Exchange

As a newly developed department, Leadership and Human Resource Management will continue to build upon the School’s knowledge exchange that creates collaborative links at local, national and international levels. Our students are encouraged to engage with businesses across all areas through their work placements, study abroad opportunities, research and consultancy projects.

Students will have the opportunity to work with the Business Clinic and help a wide range of businesses in their development.

Organisations we have worked with include BAE Systems, Procter and Gamble, NHS, Capita and Zurich Finance.

International

Our orientation is international in everything we do. Our programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels have a truly global focus.  Similarly, our research often examines issues in an international or comparative context.  Our student body is made up of people from all over the world as well as from the UK, which allows us to provide a local to global and global to local experience for all stakeholders.  Our senior researchers have international profiles, holding Visiting Professor roles in a range of countries.
